  • Actors and crew members at Hamilton’s Theatre Aquarius are preparing to open a new musical called Maggie later this month.
Maggie tells the story of a single mother from 1950s Scotland and how she raises three sons in difficult times and how her community supports her.
Director Mary Francis Moore says this show is a dream come true. The show is being put on by those whose backgrounds include Broadway and the blockbuster success Come From Away. The music featured in the show is from country star Johnny Reid. The story reflects Reid’s experience of coming to Canada from Scotland as a teenager.
Francis says, “I think everybody’s going to leave and phone their mother, or their children. I think it’s really a story about love and about connection and about friendship.”
Set in a working-class Scottish mining town, Moore says Maggie may also connect with Hamilton’s industrial background. She says, “I think people here will understand the folks on this stage. The fight to survive, the integrity, the depth, the intellect, the conversation, and the goodheartedness of the people on stage I think reflect the people of this community.”
“The women were the rock a lot of the time holding a lot of these overly aggressive, violent men with nowhere to place all this energy, they were there to hold them together,” Lawrence Libor plays one of the sons named Shug, unable to connect emotionally with Maggie. He says, “There’s a peak of hope at the end but there’s a lot of tragedy in this show.”
Maggie opens on Apr. 19 at Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton. The show will then travel to the Charlottetown festival in Prince Edward Island, the home of the Anne of Green Gables musical.
