Same! I got new skates a couple days ago and going onto the ice later today😬 im kinda scared because I leveled up before I had a reidell edge (which aren’t made anymore) and now I have a reidell motion 25/255 lol
How tight are they meant to be? Apparently I never broke in my skates (have them for a year now) and my coach tied them up so much my foot was dead after 15 min. Is this how it's meant to be?
Tight to where your ankle meets your leg, slightly loose there, not too tight from there to the top of your boot.Tie a bow with a little slack, then slip your 2nd and third fingers behind the tongue. If your fingers can't go down behind the tongue, your laces are too tight. Before going on the ice, stand up and bend your knees slightly in them for a few minutes, then walk around. That'll give you an idea of how they feel before hitting the ice. Good Luck!
I have mine tight but not super tight up to the ankle and then at the ankle I make them as tight a physically possible, if my ankles start to hurt I usually add padding.
I just went back to skating at 46..now my babies are grown..I started classes in Feb 2019 and have progressed to level 8 by early June...I'm so happy to be on the Ice again..since my last lesson at age 10!! I did a solo in my first ever gala age 47..I wear Jackson Mystique's on my feet ..I love them.. Happy skating 😍
I'm a beginner skater and i've been skating on a super cheap pair of skates I found at a thrift store(retail for $30). I finally bought a pair of Jackson's after 3 years of using painful skates with absolutely no support. I don't have ANY of the skills you showed in your video but hopefully I will be able to improve with my skates and use this video in the future.
I just bought some brand new Jackson elles and they are breaking in super nice with these tips. thanks so much. I've done about four hours now and they are starting to feel great.
just got jackson freestyle fusion.. had the old freestyle model that I used for 10 years, (I stopped lessons at test 1 level age 15). I outgrew them years ago but finally felt like I'm skating enough to need new proper fitting skates that will be my forever skates. This video definitely helps. Michelle, do you have any tips for learning jumps as an adult? I'd love to be able to do all 6 single jumps
@@lyoona1832 haven't had much time on the ice so I'm quite rusty haha, I do practice off Ice though. I like to think that I have the fundamentals of basic figure skating down. I'm no where near doing a Denise Beilmen though! 😂😁
I remember once I got new skates a week before competition, and also new blades that were 1/4 smaller and had a toe pick that started of before my last blades. It was a nightmare, but my older skates were completely worn out. The problem was that my skates arrived a month late. In the end I was able to pull through, but it was definitely a love-hate relationship.
I'm wearing my new Jackson Freestyles!! They're pre-loved skates but even so, they're super stiff and I am still in the process of breaking them in. The video was great. Thank you!!
Thank you!!! I loved watching your jumps in fast motion. I just bought Ridell Fusion boots and Eclipse Aurora Blades. This is my fourth pair of Riedells!!!
Very helpful. And it's amazing you looked so comfortable with your skating with new skates. Just some feedback, I think the intro was too long on the video, where you cut almost every word of the title and then spaced them in between some clips. It makes little sense to do that when we know the title of the video already and just visually people dont read a title per word, you read it per phrase. Am I making sense? But anyway, I love your videos because your energy is just so nice to have on screen. Keep at it. Im loving this channel so far.
I'm currently in Jackson Elle's but our Edea expert at my rink is ordering my Edea Chorus on Monday! I'm so excited to get them and break them in! Thank you for the video!
I had extreme foot pain in my new ones. Felt like my arch cramped and spazzed out. If I took a break from the ice the feet felt really bad I felt like I got punched in the stomach. I could only skate for like 15 min. Normally could do at least 45 min in my old ones. I went from Jackson freestyles to RiSport Rf3 pros, and this my was my first skating session in the new ones. I have taken all the free skate courses 1-6 and the axel class but still don't have an axel. I have all my other single jumps. I have a good camel and decent sit and camel to sit transition, but I can't center a spin for the life of me or complete a scratch spin without falling out and my back spin comes and goes. I can actually do a decent back spin if I start like a forward scratch spin and then just switch feet after going in. I can do backward power pulls but my forward ones are kinda weak even tho I still can go far, they aren't accelerating. Hope this gives you an idea of my level. I'm an adult skater, no competition. Age 36
I'm back on the ice after 16 years and bought my first pair of new skates-- all the ones I had as a kid were handmedowns! I'm so excited to take them for a spin tomorrow, I've been in rentals for the past month
New to skating and new skates! They're definitely different from the rental skates (thank God! Lol) I have Jackson elites. They're comfy, but my feet just aren't used to them yet. They're very stiff
Thank you, it really helped me! I got them already broken in in 6-7 days. I have edea piano figure skates! I wish you the best of luck in figure skating xoxo
About to start lessons and was gifted a pair of skates. All I was told was I needed to start breaking them in and you were the first person I found. While I cant do 99% of what you described, Ill be keeping it in mind while i start learning. Thanks XD
I figure skated years ago and have been off the ice now for about 28 years when my daughter stopped skating. I have always want Harlicks as a kid. But now that I am getting old I just bought a intermediate level skate. Haven't received them yet but will on the 12th. They are going to be stiff because back in my day they didn't make them like they do currently. Hope to try them out on valentine's. I am sure I will hug the wall at first but hope it comes back quickly. As much as I would love to be able to do my spins and triples I did when I was a kid but I know that I am almost 60 so the feel of the edges is what is in store for me.
Hi Michelle! Thanks for the video. I'm loving your channel. I'm 21 now and learned ice skating when I was young, and now I'm considering starting to learn figure skating. What would be some of the suggestions/ recommendations for someone who has skating background but has no clue about figure skating? Thank you xx Love from Australia
I love the tips you shared. I found even wearing them with guards on around the house also helps with breaking them in. Ive been skating for 26 years on and off and was skating on graf galaxy’s for about 8+ years. After taking more than a 5 year break, i Just recently switched to jackson premieres as i really want to finish up my tests and be able to do local adult competitions. Do you have any tips on foot care and blister prevention? I know i used to get these gel pads as a younger skater but cant seem to find them so i wasnt sure if there was a new product for this..
I’m just going into pre-free skate and I wear the Jackson ultima freestyle with the aspire blade, I just got them sharpened at the shop, then after I have them heat molded I can skate in them and break them in. When I tried them on they felt very secure and tight compared to my other beginner skates that I have (the Jackson mystiques with the mark 2 blade) which is definitely a good thing. I will definitely try some things in this video to break them in, because my boots are STIFF like fr
I recently got Edea Chorus boots with jackson legacy blades. Edea with the right fit, has little to no break in time so they were very comfy from the get go which I love. Had to change out the blades though as I'm too used to the MK professional profile of blade and I decided to upgrade to Gold Seal Revolution blades as they have the same spin rocker as the MK professional but that lovely 8 ft rocker.
Thank you for the great video. I am just returning to figure skating and received my new Jackson Ultima Excel skates today. The boots/tongues are very squeaky. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if it is just a break in issue. Prior to receiving the Jackson Excels, I tried the Jackson Classic SoftSkate 380. The 380's were fleece lined and did not squeak at all, but the sizing was not correct for me (not sold in half sizes).
Any tips for how to get used to a smaller rocker? I'm going to change to the MK lite blades from the pre fitted ones on my Jacksons but I'm slightly terrified of losing all my skills 😂🙈
Thx for the video, just got my first ice skates at 28! I bought Cascades by Lake Placid, figured they were a good beginner grade. I've ice skated once, and I know it's a little different, but I used to be a pretty competent inline skater until I moved somewhere without it, so I'm going to try a new sport!
Hi there Coach Michelle! I just got Edea Chorus boots and now need to choose blades and am looking at either Coronation Ace or MK Professionals. What are their primary differences that could help me select the right one for me??
Thank you so much! I just ordered new skates today (Risport RF-1 Elites - so stiff oh man) Now I just have to wait for my blades to arrive and get mounted!
There is a part in the movie "Ice Princess" where casey got new ice skates and after here performance she took them off and it reveals wounds. Wonder of those were true?
I just got my second pair, Risport RF Light. I’ve been skating for 10 months and was wearing Graf Boleros before. I love my new skates! They fit better and everything is much easier in them
Hi Michelle. Did you get your blades mounted at sp Teri? I got my daughter a new pair of skates and waiting for them to be delivered so this video will be super helpful for her. However, we need to find somebody to mount her blades. Who do you go to?
What skat am I wearing? Someone gave me their old skates without blades on them. So I fit them with new blades and it fit me better than anything I have ever tried on. Edea - Ice Fly. I will go downtown with them. BTW, I started skating after I turned 57, learning at lightspeed and landed my toe loop last month, 7 months in and broken two pairs of skates already. As an adult or even senior, no excuse ever for not even pursuing. :-)
I’m 15 and want to try, but definitely can’t afford lessons or my own skates. (At least not yet) where should I start? I roller blade a bit as a hobby, but I don’t know if that would help at all. How do you know what skates to look into? Are rentals really as bad as I hear people say they are? And what are some basic things I can learn by myself? Sorry that’s a lot of questions 😅 (Loving the videos!❤️)
How I envy your skating skills, late learner here. I also just recently purchased the KT-2 from George SP-Teri. Too bad I can’t use them yet bcus of Covid. I also realized the rink you’re in. Will you still be coaching when the rink opens back up? If so let me know, I’m definitely interested in continuing lessons.
I have winwells I am learning so I felt that I didn't want to spend 200 and then need a new pair I love my winwells and thxs for this video Michelle ♥️♥️
Looks good i just started wearing my new skates today !! I have recently passed UK skate star gold !! Before Christmas and I'm not wearing Risport Electra Light
I bought Edea Ice Fly two months ago. Hate is an understatement! Im just not happy with the ankle feeling so loose with the synthetic skate. I’ve heard you will either love them or hate them. Unfortunately, I hate mine. I’m trading them in tomorrow for a leather boot. Either Sp Terri or Riedell.
Man, I'm gonna have to keep trying this out. I got a new pair of skates probably 2 months ago? My first proper pair with amazing support, but they kill my feet every time I wear them. I think I'm just weak.
What do you do if your blades aren't mounted properly/in alignment?? Also, when should I get my first pair of skates? I know having your own are WAY better than rentals, but how do you balance that with the cost/commitment? (E.G. In music, you rent until it costs the same as buying your instrument to make sure you like it before spending a ton of money on something you may drop out of in a few months)
I have never skated and bought a new pair bc they were cheaper than buying used. Will this video work for a newbie like myself if I can't use the ice to help??
Hi Michelle! I have SP Teri Super Teri Deluxe. Still having issues breaking them in. Probably because I went from Riedells, LOL. Would've been easier to go from something like Harlick Boots than Riedell bcos Riedell isn't nearly as stiff. I also went from Gold Seal Blades, to Pattern 99. I feel like when I land Jumps in these new Skates that I initially grab the Outside Edge, but then open up and move to the Inside, with my left shoulder moving counterclockwise. Wondering if my Blade is off just a bit......We are on Lockdown here in LA, but EXCITED to get back to Skating soon! Thanks so much!
I just got a new pair of Jackson Premieres today. Do you have a recommended time frame of when one can start doing jumps and spins? According to my skate technician (“Mr.Edge” in the Chicago area), he says the first hour should be on crossovers and stroking, the second hour or so can start incorporating moves/basic turns, third hour on spins, then fourth hour on single rotation jumps (and later hours on doubles on up). Of course, this may vary some from person to person, but I am curious on what you recommend.
I bought three months ago my First Professional skates. Actually I bought figure rollerbleades Snow white with edea overture boot. I Love them so much❤ Now I want to buy ice skates with The same boot.
Hi my name is Skye I’m 13 and live in Australia, I love ice skating even though I have only done it twice, I would love advice and tips please. Also where do you live so maybe we could meet up in person? Thank you for your videos if it weren’t for them and you I would still be falling over because I can’t afford a coach at the moment.
sl 2346 well for me, it kind of depends. I rushed right into mine but i didn't want to spend alot of money on skates. I brought really bad figure skates (do not get figure skates from oxelo) and they lasted 5 weeks. My new pair of skates are edea and are way better then the skates i had before, and the rental pair. In conclusion, do a mass amount of research , a good pair are way more worth it then rentals. Btw i have the edea overture, with the edea rotation blade, most people start out on them :))))))).
So...I kind of had these skates for a bit and I just found them and their Canadian SLM and I had my dad sharpen them and I’m just wondering if they are good type of skates..and I’m scared to try them out
Is it normal to feel like you’re “relearning” how to skate after getting a new pair of skates? I’ve been using rentals & I just got my first pair of beginner figure skates (yay!) and was excited but felt so wobbly stepping onto the ice (not b/c of the blade alignment tho).
this video is such a lifesaver as i got my new skates today. i also had to get my blades sharpened, but now i’m struggling to even do a snowplough stop. do you have any tips for getting used to sharper blades quicker?
Go to the boards (side) of the rink, hold onto and face the boards (or railing) turn the foot you do your snowplow on, pigeon-toe (your heel facing out), and on your inside edge, scrape away from you a few times. Bend both knees slightly. Meanwhile, while skating, if you want to slow up into a Snowplow, bend your knees slightly, place both hands on both knees, keeping your feet together. That'll slow you up. Arms out to sides, then attempt the Snowplow. Try doing this until your blades are dull enough for you to do a Snow at your comfort speed. Good luck.
RIGHT when i got new skates
ectoplasmLunatic perfection! Let me know if this helps
I should be getting new skates soon (Riedell Strides or Motions, from Diamonds) so this is perfect for me too!
cutecrafter8100 i just got riedell motion! they are tough to break in but worth it in the end!
Samee!!
I’m getting new skates soon
Jackson’s
Can you do a video talking about how to lace the skates properly?
That's a great idea! I will definitely film one :)
Lol that’s me and shy running in the background
Maki Thomason really?! I thought that was Micol and Dinh haha
This video came as a blessing.
Just a few weeks ago or less I got my new skates in and I was just nervous to go on the ice xD Thank you!
Fabulous! so glad I can help :)
Same! I got new skates a couple days ago and going onto the ice later today😬 im kinda scared because I leveled up before I had a reidell edge (which aren’t made anymore) and now I have a reidell motion 25/255 lol

Happy skating 😍
Wow, that’s so cool. Do you get private lessons or you practice more yourself?
I really like the “push down” tip. Even though my feet hurt, it helps a lot to open the boots. Thank you!
Also, I wear Edea - Chorus :)
Im getting Those for my birthday!
my new skates came in today and I'm glad I found this video to help a fresh beginner like me, thank you for this!
I'm a beginner skater and i've been skating on a super cheap pair of skates I found at a thrift store(retail for $30). Are you good yet haha

Thank you so much! I just ordered new skates today (Risport RF-1 Elites - so stiff oh man) Now I just have to wait for my blades to arrive and get mounted!
That's so exciting! Congrats on getting new boots. I hope that you don't have any trouble breaking them in :)

I am getting nwe edea chorus tomorrow so excited
New*
really good tips!!!
Just a hockey player skating through. Nice vid btw
I have never skated and bought a new pair bc they were cheaper than buying used. Will this video work for a newbie like myself if I can't use the ice to help??
I have Sp Terri’ s also, I have been skating for 45 years. What blades do you have?
Oh, and I kept my old Skates, just in case I need to show someone how my old blades were mounted..... :-)
I am new to this and got a first own pair. I willt try out some of this since I am not on the level of jumps or soinns yet
Do you recommend wearing skates off ice to break them in? Like walking around the house with Rockerz on? Or is that not good for the blades?
If you have Rockerz on the blade it's not affecting the blade
@@clarebear3217 Thanks for replying
I bought three months ago my First Professional skates. Actually I bought figure rollerbleades Snow white with edea overture boot. I Love them so much❤ Now I want to buy ice skates with The same boot.
I wear BOTAS, its a brand from Russia, the skates are wonderful
Hi my name is Skye I’m 13 and live in Australia, I love ice skating even though I have only done it twice, I would love advice and tips please.
Also where do you live so maybe we could meet up in person? Thank you for your videos if it weren’t for them and you I would still be falling over because I can’t afford a coach at the moment.
Nice video! What are the best figure skates to start ice skating?
Risporr RF3 and Coronation Ace blades by John Wilson
I got new boots, the Edea ice fly. I really like you're videos ❤️
may I kindly know if it is necessary to buy a customized skate shoes instead of rental shoes for beginners? is it a big difference ?
sl 2346 well for me, it kind of depends.
So...I kind of had these skates for a bit and I just found them and their Canadian SLM and I had my dad sharpen them and I’m just wondering if they are good type of skates..and I’m scared to try them out
Wow I am so late but anyway this video helped me get some spins and jumps back so thanks for that and I wear graf custom-made
Im getting my first pair of skates tomorrow, kinda anxious. I hope it will be ok 😅
Love your videos❤
Is it normal to feel like you’re “relearning” how to skate after getting a new pair of skates? I’ve been using rentals & I just got my first pair of beginner figure skates (yay!) and was excited but felt so wobbly stepping onto the ice (not b/c of the blade alignment tho).
Omg every youtube skater ive seen are right legged skaters and im a left legged skater 😂
SAME LFMAOOD
Same!
Same and I'm also left handed
this video is such a lifesaver as i got my new skates today. i also had to get my blades sharpened, but now i’m struggling to even do a snowplough stop. do you have any tips for getting used to sharper blades quicker?
Even though its hard to stop try to just skate super fast and push through them spins also can help
Good luck.
Got any tips on getting better at crossovers? I struggle to do crossovers
You are amazing i wanna learn but i domt now if im late for that
It's never too late. I have adult skaters in there 60s so you are totally able to skate!
My Edea overture arrived and the foot pain is real Oh My God! 3rd skating day
I got my first pair of skates the same day I had a lesson, i wasnt used to the sharp blade and toe picks and went flying lol
