Special thanks to Yamamoto-san for coming to do this interview with us! We weren't able to include all the questions he answered, so if you're interested in seeing the full version of the video, let us know by liking the video and commenting below.
Honestly loved this interview! Would really love to see the extended version, he's so passionate and knowledgeable about paper and it was a fascinating watch!
Have to agree: his excitement, knowledge, and passion for paper is infectious! JetPens arranging for us to get to hear a wonderful fellow stationery nerd is super endearing! Thank you guys, and thank him, too!
I learned something new regarding "Youshi" and "Washi"....thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, Yamamoto-san. What a sweet, gentle man who is obviously passionate about his products. Would love to see the full version of his interview!
I’ve never clicked on a video in my feed so fast, I want to see more videos with Yamamoto-San answering answering questions and telling us about his love for paper ❤❤❤
A big ありがとう ございます to やまもとさん for all his passion and enthusiasm for discussing paper and it's history. And thank you for having Japanese subtitles available because I appreciate being able to do two hobbies (stationary nerd and learning Japanese) at the same time!!!
Thanks for all this expertise! I could listen to him talk about paper for hours I'm not worried about my hand oils, I'm worried about my cat walking on my pages with his toe beans 😅 Thankfully this helps with that issue too
I was today years old when I learned wood was NOT the main resource for making paper until a century ago. I knew there were other resources that could be used, but not that those were the main resource used. Thank you, Yamamoto-san.
Paper nerds unite!! I'm SOOO particular about paper! I've found an 11x9 spiral notebook with heavyweight paper and a plastic cover that I LOVE!! I will write anything, just give me a reason to write because my favorite pen glides across the paper like butter. Oh yeah, when the products work well together the writing experience is elevated to enjoyment!!
Thank you for this video! I had the priviledge of meeting Yamamoto-san at the SF Pen Show last year. I was awe-struck that THE Yamamoto paper guy was there, in person, at the table! He is so nice, and, obviously, knowledgable. I love paper tasting. I cannot find a favourite, so I like to have some of everything :-) I'm grateful that JetPens has so many Yamamoto papers in stock. I can't believe these wonderful papers are also really affordable.
I am enthralled by this gentleman's language and wonder...how and the world could you learn this language ??? I love the lettering and also wonder...how and the world could you learn it ??? His voice is relaxing. Thank you for posting this very informative video. I love the Washii paper explanation and was always wondering how that beautiful paper is made. It is so delicate. Never met a piece of Wash tape I did not love. Thank you kind Sir. 🥰From the sunny south in the USA.
Thank you very much! And Thank you for your interest in washi paper. We are currently planning a washi for fountainpens, and we hope to introduce it to everyone soon.
I love seeing people who are enthusiastic about their areas of expertise! Also, that pad of mixed paper types is genius and is the catalyst for me actually wanting to get a fountain pen now. I had known that I would be picky about paper properties, but couldn't tolerate the expense of many full pads of different papers. This is a truly perfect solution. THANK YOU for a wonderful video!
one of the best videos you made! This is so awesome! Thank you for making the inteview - I learned so much and I love paper too so I am happy to try new types of paper, please keep these educational videos coming
Earlier this year I really got into japanese epaper because the paints I use just suck on all the western papers I tried out. I fell in love with japanese paper and the process of making the paper as well as the results I got with my paints and my newly found interest in fountain pens and inks 🙈 japanese paper was also what led me into stationary in general and now I'm in a death grip all because I wanted better paper to paint on lol I'd really love to see an extended video of the interview!
It never occured to me that hand oils might actually affect writing, but then I remember I've had experience with this when I used to write on extremely cheap paper with extremely cheap pens. Sometimes the pen would just randomly stop on specific areas of the paper that work just fine everywhere else.
Thank you for sharing your visit with Yamamoto-san! What a treat to to watch! I greatly admire the Yamamoto papers, and their promotion of other fine papers, and was pleased to see the enthusiasm of Yamamoto-san in this video. Well done!
That was AWESOME! More of this kind of content would be lovely, the rest of the interview obviously, and other experts too! 🥰 Also, I appreciate the fact that you had the interview in japanese and subtitled 😊
I would definitely watch a longer version of this video and if you have or can recommend a documentary on paper - history, the making of, different types, etc. I'd be interested in that!
I will be totally interested on a longer version., that was very informative , and Mr Yamamoto enthusiasm was contagious now to search for. For that sheep Cloud paper 👀
Absolutely loved this video, what a delightful and knowledgeable person! Please have him back, and often! The information was fascinating, and his gentle but passionate delivery had an ASMR effect: his love for his craft, and his desire to share it with others is indisputably genuine.
Wonderfully entertaining and informative as well, quite needed, as this is a new world to many of us. More instructional videos like this would be very welcome. Thanks very much for posting this episode.
This was an AMAZING video!!!!!!!!! Seriously y’all, knocked it out of the park with this one. It’s so great to meet the face behind the paper company, and wonderful to witness the enthusiasm he has. There’s a very special way that people glow when they talk about their passion for stationery. This has me so excited for try more papers 😁
I would love to see an extended video! I love Tomoe River paper, it's wonderful to write on. Original Crown Mill is also a high quality paper. Some of their paper can be used to print on and I also bought a A4 pad which is scored (a groove that helps fold paper) in the middle and the grain of the paper follows the long side of the paper. This is perfect if you want to make a notebook, for whoch you need to fold paper, and still have the grain of the paper follow the direction of writing.
This was really interesting! I'd really like to see the full version of this interview. I love Yamamoto paper! Their Ro-Biki series are a must-have for me, I always keep one in my Traveler's Notebook because it's just the right size.
OK.....does anyone else wish they knew Yamamoto-san personally!? He seems so awesome and like he would make a really good friend! And he would understand my neeed for more paper more ink more pens MORE CUTE CAASES!
The fact that I found this fascinating and finished the whole video is the whole reason I avoided Shibuya and LOFT on payday lol. Temptations. I'm weak.
I wanna touch paper made of fabric... And yeah, having the modern day be so touchscreen based and fast, is too much for me! I'm used to a bit of buffer (joined the internet in 2010). But what I do appreciate about this new speed, is it being easier to photoshop and make collages.
I love how joyful and passionate he is about paper and stationery! His voice is very soothing too. I’d love the full version to play on the side as I write on my planners. In a world where so many of our tasks need to be done on our devices, it’s refreshing how there is a little escape for those of us who prefer the peace of paper and pens. I’d love to see more interviews like these to learn more about the stationery industry. 🩷
Thanks for the video! As a fountain pen user and paper lover it is really nice to learn of new papers - especially with how disappointing the recent tomoe river sanzen paper has been…
Loved this interview. I learned so many new bits of information. I would be very interested to see the parts that weren't posted! Thank you Jet Pens and Yamamoto-san!
many thanks to Yamamoto-san ❤I had no idea that old washi was made from clothing scraps. /THE MORE YOU KNOW/ would definitely love to see the full version! also can I just say how much I loved being called ペーパーナード :'D
Also If Yamamoto-san wants more questions: i love papercraft that folds into 3D shapes (not origami) and I'm trying to figure out how the weight of paper works. It seems so confusing! is there a paper test that measures how durable paper will be when it folds? Example: i built a papercraft capybara from an artist named SneepSnorp - they created their 3D papercrafts in Blender first.
I think it is better more 100gsm. And if I were you, I will think about paper grain direction. For example, when making leg parts, align the paper grain vertically to the legs.
Love hearing about all kinds of paper! Let's see the rest of the interview please! Also, the link for Yamamoto Paper has a parenthesis at the end that makes it go to a 404 not found.
This is such an interesting and lovely interview so thank you so much, JetPens! I'm such a stationery geek and I loved finding out about papers and hand oils. I never really thought about it until he discussed it. Please upload the full interview, JetPens! ❤
What a lovely interview! I enjoyed it so much. Please share the full version, I can't wait to see it! There are so many unknown things about the different types and brands of papers and it can be really difficult to get information about them, so I am thankful for videos like this that shares the knowledge. Brilliant!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I would be eager to see the full interview. Yamamoto-san is so knowledgeable and a delight to listen to! I've always had a question about the large Yamamoto sample pads (one of which I have). It seems like most of thosr papers are not available in the U.S. What are our options if we fall in love with a paper in the sample pad?
Thanks. Great video and happy to hear him speak with the subtitles. I also would love to hear more especially introducing more paper and history and pairings advice.
You can write on various papers with a fountain pen, but whether it bleeds depends on the ink. Black and blue-black inks are generally less likely to bleed.

Your cat is so playful! Enjoy your time with your cat, pens, and paper.

I was today years old when I learned wood was NOT the main resource for making paper until a century ago. I knew there were other resources that could be used, but not that those were the main resource used. Thank you, Yamamoto-san.
Since appearing in this video, I've become more interested in learning about the origins of paper. I'm currently doing some research.

Couldn't agree more! I've been looking for a nice, big spiral notebook for my game notes. Which notebook are you using?
I am also curious about which notebook you found!

Sometimes the pen would just randomly stop on specific areas of the paper that work just fine everywhere else.
The relationship between pens, ink, and paper is very mysterious. That's why I find it so fascinating.
