Best to stay calm in rough seas! I also stay safe. I don't venture on the foredeck when waves are coming through the trampoline just to get good videos!
Pierre and Lisa, Great video. You absolutely captured the size of those waves, the speed was phenomenal and Pierre obviously enjoyed helming. Loved the technical info. It's so refreshing to see boat info, weather info, your backup plans. We have a high performance 30 year background on monohulls and there is little video of cruising couples sailing in conditions like this as you and we have done. Looking forward to the next vlog.
When we lived in NC we loved visiting Beaufort to see the sail boats there. Very relaxing port 40 years ago. Got to see Walter Cronkite yacht once. He wasn’t aboard someone was bringing It north from FL. Love your adventures. Great depiction of this adventure. Your husband is quite the sailor. Oh, and Tiller steals the show...
Lisa, some wonderful footage, as it gives you a real perspective as to what sailing at 20kts plus is actualy like with following seas. I know it is stressfull, but it still would not wipe the smile off my face!
One of those fast and sloppy sea sails. You were making really good speed in the crud. I love cats for these passages, dry, warm and, other than the infamous"cat walk" pretty smooth. Your boat looks very comfortable and sturdy.
First time I’ve seen your Vlog, the best way I’ve seen to give a better representation of the size of the swells and waves is if the camera’s fixed to the boat, with some of the vessel showinG to give a size perspective. It was also hard to pickup what the SOG was most of the time, although you showed the screen from time to time, it was quick and hard to pick. Thanks for sharing and safe passage as you head North. 😃🇦🇺

Awesome downwind blast! Frustrating the camera doesn't do the waves and conditions justice, but I believe you. Thundering down a wave at 28knts gives it justice. Keep up the videos 😃
I would love to know more your reefing technique, especially during heavy weather and following seas. Can you, and do you, reef going downwind - or do you have to come up to a beam-reach or further into the wind before you reef?? If you do reef downwind, then what are some of the tricks or equipment used to allow the sail to drop efficiently? Thanks for the videos, very interesting and helpful for a want-to-be and probably future cruiser.
We do have some tricks to reef downwind, but it can also take some muscle power or a winch to get it down to the reef point if it is really blowing. The best trick is to reef BEFORE you really need to. With only two on board I am never filming when reefing, especially in heavy weather!

hey guys, a quick one for you, whilst riding the waves at 20+knt speed what is your helming technique? never run it at dead-downwind? surf the waves doing S curves at broad reach to avoid excessive nose-diving? cheers
Pierre: If hand steering and wewant to have fun, steer with the waves. If storms ie above 40 kts, steer for the holes. Most of the time, it is the autopilot. We have not yet needed to hand steer for the holes with BioTrek. In our last cat the auto could not manage big seas and we needed to help it with hand steering.

That is a good question! Pierre hand steers for fun - I stay inside and keep things in order. The autopilot on BioTrek is pretty good - but Pierre can keep the boat steadier than auto in those conditions. On our last cat, we it was a MUST to "help" the autopilot in large following waves or to hand steer. So it depends on the boat and the autopilot.

We steer from inside and have a clear 360 view when the weather is bad are for for night watch. Also, we like a clear view of sails, traveler and a clear view behind the boat when at sea. The enclosures that other boats keep up at sea prevent a clear view around the boat. Plus, if the winds were really bad and they started to tear, it is not a good time to be worrying about accessory canvas. We have sun screens that we put up in port and a cover for the helm station that keeps rain out of the cockpit. Thanks for the question! Do you keep canvas up on your boat?
I really liked this video, being able to see cat sailing in weather other than tropical breeze sailing. As a couple, do you sometimes feel overwhelmed operating BioTrek due to her size, ie: reefing in those conditions from the mast. Be safe. cheers
Pierre no, he is in his element with this boat. Me, as an afterthought because when the going gets tough, you just do it. When we navigate as a couple we reef earlier, we reef at night, we don't fly the code D at night etc. We always put on our harnesses with personal AIS when doing maneuvers when rough. We can now take the first reef from the back. Of course, it is with the 2nd and 3rd that it would be best to take from the back! Pierre is working on it. For now, he is the one to go forward while I manage the halyard. Bottom line: think ahead!
Biotrek-sailing, Pierre earns a little more of my respect every video. I admit I started watching because it’s the only 5X videos of any consequence, but I’ve stayed due to Pierre... okay and Tiller too, but don’t tell my pup. Lol Also: I went to Beaufort a little after H.S. graduation to a summer camp known as Parris Island. I spent some time later at MCAS Beaufort before being discharged. It amazes me looking back how I can simultaneously view that time period as the greatest and worst times of my life.

We have Navionics on the B &G, and Time Zero on the computer. I put a link to Commander weather in the description. Weather we download comes with Time Zero.

Jacqui, you would only have needed to go to sleep. That is what Tiller does when conditions are rough.
