We are Pierre, Lisa and Tiller, sailing a performance Outremer 5X catamaran . After sailing around the world fifteen years ago, we returned to careers we loved, but the yearning to liveaboard again kept getting stronger. Sailing across oceans is part of who we are: Pierre is a former Olympic sailor, entrepreneur, Star-trekky, and engineering wiz who keeps BioTrek in top shape. Lisa is a neuroscientist with a love of biology and our natural world. Tiller is our labradoodle who grew up on board and has sailed over 20,000 miles since being a puppy. Together we are BioTrek and we set out to discover ocean landscapes, explore our biological world, meet new people, and appreciate diverse cultures along the way.
Navigating the complexities of sailing. Ep 158.
Sailing towards the eye of the storm for our Gulf Stream crossing, we journey home from the Caribbean at the end of a three-year circumnavigation. The videos will continue, as we sell our boat, review the best and worst of sailing, and look forward to new journeys.

Reading of the Declaration of Independence 2024

Something different! We've sailed to New England in time to celebrate July 4th. With a hand-held camera it was difficult to hold it steady above the heads of the crowd, but the audio captures the spirit! Many lessons for modern times in the Declaration of Independence. Read July 4th 2024 in Boston at the State House, the same place where it was first read to American colonists.

have you been hit with lightning since you created the lightning diversion wire? What was the result? A surge protector system didnt work?
Thanks for sharing. Would be interesting to get your feedback 4 years later. How did the sails hold up and did you replace any? How much more life would you expect in similar conditions?
ua-cam.com/video/4BeyOYP8oqw/v-deo.html Vitamine, 2 Canoes and GC also in the market 🤨
SCREEN YOUR MIKE !! Otherwise your AUDIO is VERY POOR.... just "wind roar" even in just a light breeze....
Nice to be on outer islands. I’m from Maskelyne😍
Loved your sailing ❤
Thanks for sharing your trip with us!
Thanks for watching! 🌏
Well done you two and thanks for the videos
Thanks for watching! 🌏
I have followed your journey through all 158 episodes. I have always enjoyed your sharing of weather, strategy, conditions, repairs and modifications. I feel like you have always tried to show an honest view of what it is like at sea. Off course that includes some of the fantastic times and experience you have enjoyed. But it certainly has not been a 5-year vacation. I look forward to your review of the best and worst. Will blue water sailing be a part of your future travels? Thanks for sharing the journey, experiences, knowledge and explanations.
Thank you for watching! Maybe not as professional as many others, but I recorded what I would like to remember when I look back in old age. We will be on the ocean again, but need some land time. Maybe BFF for now (boats of friends and family).
Great to see you again. Thanks for taking us with you on your amazing adventure. Cheers
I've missed seeing you too!
I can't wait to see what's next! 😉
Thank you for following BioTrek. I will keep making videos but not on a schedule. A bit more of BioTrek before we are on to something new.
Very emotional video… the end of your journey on BioTrek but also the start of a new adventure. Merci à vous trois!
Still a few more to come. I just posted our last sail. Next, some best and worst of the last 5 years.
I do wonder what's next. The how and the why...unless I have missed something...
We want to stay a bit closer to home, actually be at home. Staying put for awhile and catching up with family and friends has been pretty sweet.
Great to see you guys. All the best wishes for the future
I will certainly miss your 5X adventures. Looking forward to your next edition!
Re-watching this as I ponder lightning protection for my boat. One thing to note, on the statistic about boats only getting struck while stationary.... I believe that might be a sampling effect as the majority of boats out there are not in motion.
Good point. The new owner of BioTrek will change the system. Maybe I can do a video on that.
I concur on your solution, personally I would make the copper cable continuous to the water contact, oxidation is isolating and to be avoided. Also it’s more important to have a clean surface when contacting the water so I would not waste money on fancy water sculptures, just wipe your terminal plate clean before water insertion.
Agree with the continuous connection. It was not possible on the 5x.
I do have Mobile regional from Spain!!
Let's continue to protect the constitution and stand by the declaration of Independence. Communism, socialism, fascism does not protect what is being read here. Let's stand by this and continue honoring our forefathers. God bless America 🇺🇸
Well said!!!
I can not thank you enough for sharing your wisdom and experience sailing around the world. Thank you sincerely for bringing us along.
Thank you for kind comments! A few more sailing vids to come then on the something different.
Great video Liza, and thank you for sharing say hi to Pierre, I'm in Costa Rica now 🍻
Enjoy! I hope to meet up again!
Best wishes Trekkers.
What an adventure! It was a real pleasure to follow you on your circumnavigation. Merci beaucoup à vous trois!
Merci à vous!
Thanks for all the great videos with your 5X.
I am glad you enjoyed them. Some review vids to come.
Merci et à bientôt
Merci!
So many wonderful memories. Congratulations on selling your 5X.
Thank you for following me! The new owners will keep the name and take her around again!
Not enough people understand this :( great video!
Glad you liked it!
Love your videos, and appreciate the well-earned insights. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Cape Town and surrounds are some of the most beautiful places you will ever see.. And I don't mean this in some derelict beauty kind of way. It is as developed as anything in the west. I've only got experience of the sea on a cruise ship to Bazarutho Island (also an absolute must for travellers.. especially if you dive). I remember the water was very choppy till almost in Durban. We pronounce Agullhus ... A gull us, or A gull is (like the i in chip)
I totally agree. One of our best stops.
I live in Cape Town 😁
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video of your trip to Polynesia. I have been living in Bora Bora for almost six years. I recently got a Starlink and will activate it in Spain. I'm wondering if it will work here in Polynesia.
For your starlink, it depends what subscription you have. The
Nice video guys. Our experience with our previous cat across the Atlantic was almost the whole trip with the asymmetrical spinnaker off the windward hull. It was super nice sailing in 10/14 knots almost the whole passage. 2 days out of Fernando our crew got caught in a squall with the asymmetrical spinnaker up and that was the end of that sail . We then really suffered with the light winds trying to sail with a main sail and Genoa at 140 degrees. It was moto sailing for days til we got to Suriname and stopped over for 10 days. Now we have our Catana 47 in SE Asia and light winds it is for sure. It’s nice to be able to sail with our screecher and full main in 10 knots where most are still motoring. We have not as yet got any winds at the right angle to raise our spinnaker as yet🙄. Was I right in seeing Biotrek up for sail at just catamarans ? What boats next 😊
Yes, BioTrek is for sale with Just Catamarans. We have different ideas about what is next, but not right away. Enjoy Thailand!
Again one tecnical question: you are talking about reefing downwind. How do you manage it, when there is much wind in the mainsail? Thanks for an answer!
Yes downwind reefing. Mast rotation helps. We also have a downhaul cord to the first reef that we take to the winch at helm station. And take pressure off the sail by letting the sheet out a bit.
@@biotreksailing Thank you very much!
Your videos helped inform my own choice for cruising cat, will sadly miss all the top tips. Just wondering how you get B&G Zeus mirrored on your PC screen? I’ve tried a couple of Android emulators for link app, but without success.
Pierre pulled an HDMI cord from the B&G to the computer screen. The screen must have 2 HDMI inlets.
@@biotreksailing , thank you. Unfortunately my 12” Zeus 3s doesn’t have HDMI out. Will keep looking. Appreciate your reply.
Congratulations again! Whoever buys Biotrek will be lucky with all the upgrades and backups Pierre and you have made.
Congratulation to another circumnavigation! We met each other at St. Lucia Rodney bay, when I finisht the ARC 2021 and you came along. I followed your channel and I admire you. My dream would be an atlantic crossing with an outremer 45 and I hope it become true. I hope, this boat is not to small (Ningyo was with you), what do you think? All the best for you and your family!
I like the 45. It is a smaller boat, and therefore easier to handle. I've never sailed on the 45. I've sailed on the 51 and think it is pretty sweet.
@@biotreksailing Thank you very much, all the best!
Hi ! Très belle vidéo encore merci à vous et bon vent pour la suite ! Biotrek risque nous manquer...😢
Nous aussi!
Thanks for the wisdom you two. Very balanced and logical. I feel like there could be easily 20+ more videos of lessons learned over your past 2 laps
Maybe, surely a few more to come in the short term. I would like to help at McGill with some open science communication stories.... another passion. Two new grandchildren in Montreal are quite a draw too.
Great video. I have enjoyed your entire circumnavigation. I thought I saw were BioTrek had been sold. Where are you giving it up for delivery to the new owners? Possibly I am mistaken and you will be sailing BioTrek to New England. Then you have to add that new grandchild into the mix. A very strong pull, I am sure.
Thank you. BioTrek is for sale but not sold. There is interest in New England 🤞yes grandchildren are a pull - one newborn and one 2. They are now with us in St Martin for a week😊
Going to miss watching Pierre get the most out of biotrek.
I am sure he will continue to get the most out of the next boat 🛶
Cool, an international canoe, look like fun to sail ;)
Thanks for letting us follow along on your journey. Seems there are a number of GLYWO boats hitting the market. Circumnavigation ✔and onto the next chapter. Congratulations on 2 laps around the globe. Quite an accomplishment! Cheers.
Yes other GLYWO boats on the market but none like BioTrek!
Great video guys. Is the 5X truly easy to handle by a couple or are you not allowing for the Pierre factor making it look easy. We're looking forward to finding out if there will be another boat. Cheers
There is a Pierre factor with all the modifications: electric traveller, changed winch control button location, reefing system etc. If Pierre were injured I could sail BioTrek by myself, but not fast. I would slow her down - a lot. He likes to say that you can slow down a fast boat but not speed up a slow boat.
Carnival in Brazil looks like so much fun with all the dancing and music! Great footage of all the animals you saw in the Amazon esp. that enormous boa feasting on the lizard! Great archery skills by the Canadians!
Thank you so much! We really did see the best of Brazil!
Amazing show. Thanks so much
Glad you enjoyed it. Next up our view of a performance cat. Just finished it during a rainy day in St Martin.
Congratulations on your circumnavigation around the world! Thanks so much for making these great videos of your adventure with great music!. We have a new appreciation of sailing, cultures, nature, and beautiful places around the world! Loved Tiller's video!
Thank you so much!
It was hilarious I agree...
Tiller has been voted the best video maker. Very soothing. Great job...
Wow - Tiller is on a roll!
I Have enjoyed your adventures. Best of luck with the sale.
Thanks so much!
😎 enjoy Martinique
Where are you now?
Great video. We are presently sailing in Salvador, Brazil, hoping to see you out there.
I hope so too!
