My BEST EVER clay pipe bowl yet! - Mudlarking the River Thames with Nicola White

- Join me as I search the Thames foreshore at low tide for objects lost or thrown away by Londoners of the past (or the present!).
This video was filmed in December 2019 and is when I found the most beautiful clay pipe bowl! I would say it is one of my best ever (and I've found a few!).
This and other little trinkets and treasures left out by the Thames tide - and each with a story to tell.
You need a permit to mudlark on the River Thames and you can find out all the info you need on the Port of London Authority website:- www.pla.co.uk
Thank you for watching. You can follow me too on instagram and twitter @tidelineart
See you soon.

While watching yNicola make these finds, I often think about the person who accidentally dropped their brooch or other "treasure" into the Thames and said something like, "Oh no! There it goes! It's gone now forever!" 250 years later, Nicola's shadow falls upon it as she says, "Oh look! Do you see what I'm looking at?" and 70,000 people witness its reappearance in the light of day.
I really love this thought!
finders keepers.
I loved this comment SO much, too!!! 💕
What a cool story/idea.
Well that thought will comfort me, as I think back about my lovely Skydancer-umbrella that I lost in the harbour at age 6.
In 250 years, they will find it back for me :)
Getting excited over a new pipe extraction is the new geekdom. This channel gives me joy.
Ditto, call me geek!
very happy it gives you joy Lana! That makes my day
Me too also!! Totally geeking on clay pipes.😁
Ohhhh yes, a Geek be me! 😄
I love the people who post here, all so interesting and imaginative. 😺
If you leave pipe to dry then put it in your woodburning stove hot ashes overnight it will nicely "bleach" it.
Love the nature photography. I'm doing chemo and when that fish won I felt it was a sign :-) Your river trips and videos are part of my recovery plan, much love and hope your car feels better.
I was cheering the fish when it escaped! whoot whoot fish!!!!!
I noticed as the cormorant was trying to swallow the fish that the dorsal fins were erect causing it to be to large for the mouth of the bird. Great video. Thank you Nicola. From Bremerton, WA USA.
But the cormorant is still hungry.
Your lovely photography is the icing on the cake to the discovery of your finds. The Battle of the Thames between the fighting fish and hungry fowl certainly had me cheering for the hands-down winner as confirmed by your score board. Your videos always leave me with the feeing I'd visited your lovely city -- a welcome respite in my day. Thank you for allowing my gush, and for taking us with you on your excursions, without leaving the comfort of our homes. Nicola, I appreciate how your artful talent permeates everything you touch.
I really enjoy seeing your wildlife pictures & buildings, boats, mist, lapping waves of the River Thames & beautiful sunrise 🌄 & sunsets 🌇 & clouds ☁️ & aircraft at the beginning & in the end of all your wonderful videos !!! So relaxing !!! Wow, Nicola you sure did find several nice items on that adventure !!! Loved that special clay pipe with the soldier & helmet 🪖, the little spoon 🥄 , pink stone in gold & that beautiful ball shaped coral !!! All very nice. Always enjoy watching you find treasures !!! Much love to you Nicola !!! ❤️🙂
Nicola, I always look forward to Sundays when "my favorite mudlarks " post their videos, especially on my 60th birthday 🙂 Thanks so much!
Happy happy birthday 🎉 may all your dreams come true x
i love that u find pleasure in picking up items most people would ignore - the child's punishment lines are priceless! As is the soldier's head pipe - you do find the best pipes of any mudlarker I watch.
9:30 That bird is still telling all his bird buddies about "the one that got away".
"Pink to make the boys wink" --- you are a font of English bon mots. Keep it up, I'm enjoying them.
Here from Hank Green.
I have to admit I hadn't heard of mudlarking, but I already love this & your collection is incredible!
Thanks Rebecca. It was great to meet Hank. Such a delight
Same here :) so interesting!
100 years face down in the mud, and still a handsome British soldier. Now that's quality.
I was just dealing with some work stress and then your video popped up. I feel so much better now!
Great. Have a stress free week Stephanie!
Thank you for this wonderful trip Nicola. I was ready to go into withdrawals and THERE YOU WERE with a new video. That pipe bowl with the soldier was so wonderful. There was so much creativity back then and I would hate to see this talent go unnoticed, but thanks to you, you have revived an era that deserved to be remembered. Margaret :-)
Thank you
The lines bring back a memory that I will share with you, when I was in the third grade, my sister in the fourth, we got on the school bus one day and sat down together on the same seat. It wasn't long before I noticed a sandwich bag filled with trinkets on the floor of the bus, I picked them up and showed them to my sister who was a year and half older then her brother. I asked her if it was ok for me to have them. She said it was ok, so I put them in my pocket and when I got in my classroom at school I gave them to Amy, a girl I was madly in love with. Amy showed them to other kids in the room and it wasn't long before I was in trouble. The trinkets belonged to another girl that rode the same bus and just happened to be in the third grade also. It wasn't long before I was being questioned by my third grade teacher and the school principal as to how I came to have those trinkets. I explained that I had found them on the floor of the bus and that my sister told me I could have them. So the teacher and principal sent for my sister and asked her if she saw me pick them up off the bus floor and if she told me I could have them, my sister who I assume was as frightened as I was, said she had never seen those trinkets. The lines started for me that day on the black board during recess and continued every day at recess for two hold weeks and it was all because my sister did not tell the truth.
Oh my very dramatic indecent for such a young age.
The cormorant trying, and failing, to swallow a flatfish was funny. I remember the petrol cans that had those brass lids (Pratts). They usually rusted away in sheds, just leaving the brass lid and a pile of rust.
If life ever returns to normal, there'll be throngs of betroweled mudlark aficionados turning up at Gatwick to survey your estuaries and bottle dumps (I know we'd never be allowed permits). I so enjoy these escapes!!!!! Thank you, Nicola!!!!!!
James is finally up-to-date with your last 2 video's. He loved the red glass stopper (we hope you've come across it now 🤞🏻). The pipe bowl is amazing, he loves all the pink finds (as that's his favourite colour!) & he was fascinated by the footage of the cormorant with the fish.
We can't wait to see the other finds you've mentioned & hope your car is "all better" now 😊 Xx
Thanks Emma! No sign of the stopper yet :(. Please say a big hi to James for me xx
You and Si are at the top of my list ..great finds and awsome history lesson on what the things are..thank you ur videos are greatly appreciated
Thank you Robert
See Nicola! If the car was working you wouldn't have found such exquisite jewlery and a super pipe. I loved watching the cormerants glad I wasn't under or looking up when it decided to poop. And the one with the big fish !! Aww the swans were so majestic I love your video's, make me smile and happy Thank you Nicola xxx
Thank you
What an amazing pipe bowl, Nicola! Love it!
Girl your enthusiasm is a better pick me up than a pot of coffee. Excellent mudlarking, excellent editing. Heck your just excellent. Thank you so much for sharing with us all. 🌈🌅
Thank you
Nicola, thank you for sharing your amazing finds today! The one thing that really resonates with me is "who might have touched this last". I always think maybe my great great grandfather..... I feel connected to my heritage through these finds. Have a wonderful day!!
The worst lines I ever had the pleasure of writing were:
“Continual misbehaviour eventually turns to ignorance”
200 times.
.
😁😖😵 My goodness! That must have been an incredible teacher! 😎
I think among the very first words I learned to spell was in my first grade teacher's repeated comment: "...Your desk is an M-E-S-S mess!..." 😄
"I will not shoot spitballs in class. I will not shoot spitballs in class. I will not shot spitballs in class. I will not shoot spitballs in class. etc etc "
I was always given lines by my German teacher, who made us write a German rhyme.
'Mein Hut der Hat drei Ecken, drei Ecken hat mein Hut
Und hat der nicht drei Ecken, dann ist er nicht mein Hut.'
(which means; 'My hat, it has three corners, three corners has my hat,
And if it doesn't have three corners, then it's not my hat.')
If you handed them in, he'd take them from you and as part of the punishment, he'd tear up the paper, throw it in the bin and say; 'There you go, your time was wasted!'
Now, I have Attention-Deficit-Hyperactive-Disorder (ADHD) so I was late daily. And the lines were part of the 'homework' for the next day.
He always said; 'Emma! You're late again! That's another 2 full pages of Mein Hut der Hat drei Ecken!!!' Only to tear it up the next day, when I handed it in.
So, eventually, instead of spending my precious time, writing the lines everyday, I started saving up pennies.
I then wrote a full page (both sides) of "Mein Hut" one more time, for myself. And kept it in my locker, together with about 25 copies, both sides printed.
That way I was always prepared for ány amount of lines he wanted me to write. And he never found out.
I think it is the opposite. I think willful ignorance leads to continual misbehavior!
One of your best videos yet! So nice to see fish and other wildlife abundant in the Thames.
Nicola White , best Mudlarking videos on UA-cam ! Wonderful explanations , genuine appreciation and enthusiasm, excellent knowledge ...just always a pleasure to watch . Thank you Nicola
Thank you Fiona! x
@@nicolawhitemudlark Hi Nicola , you really should have your own programme on TV , I hope someone makes this happen . I do notice you popping up from time to time , most recently with Tony Robinson , but you never get enough air time ! Given the opportunity most people would rather watch you x
Your videos are marvelous. I get exited just like you with all the treasures you find and share with us. Thank you very much. A big warm sunny hug from San José, Costa Rica.
Thank you
I have always marveled at a mudlarkers keen eye for spotting the tiniest treasure. Awesome vid I loved it all. :)
I’ll be watching closely for what items show up after Dennis the Bomb Cyclone visits. 👍
Errgood
Ohhh the details on his hat! Exquisite! Also love the swans wagging their tails. 😊
Just love all those teenie tiny bits and bobs. You are the Pipe Queen! Great pipe. Thanks for a great outing this afternoon. You definitely turned around that miserable gray day and made my gray day sunny too.
thank you!
The fish battle was epic.... Thanks for adding it❣️
Great trip to the Thames water front, again. You had some awesome finds. The swans were really interested in your finds too. They look so graceful on the water, & the 1 tgat was fluffing her feathers, that was beautiful so elegant. Thank you again for the trip out really enjoyed it. 🦋🐝🐞
Another superb video Nicola.
The Cormorant versus Dab; The Dab was never going to be swallowed, as it was far too wide for the poor bird, who was always going to be denied its meal.
Classic comedy ensued when the Gull tried to steal the fish, which then made its escape.
I love your videos on Sunday nights. They briefly take my mind off the soon approaching Monday morning grind.
Thank you.
Thanks Gary. Yes, I was relieved for the fish. Whether he died of shock or not is another matter!
most enjoyable, as you tell the story of the finds you bring the past alive. the mudlarkers seem to be a wonderful group of people. Thank you Nicola for you videos and all your hard work... I wish it could be me out and about, seeing the finds on ground. x
I truly enjoy your videos!! Learning so much. Thank you😊
GOSH, what I would give to just find one of those TREASURES ! ☺ I think, one of your best days yet !!! ❤
Wow that was a fantastic find of the pipe. It is amazing how detailed it was. I so enjoyed this video it makes me feel as if I was on the adventure with you. Thanks for sharing the nature around you.
Dear Nicola,
It is such a delight to watch this video! The swans remind me of peonies by the shapes of their feathers. That fish was sooo lucky. I kept thinking that bird needed claws to slice up that fish!!
The portrait pipe of a soldier is so elegantly sculpted -- amazing to see how beautifully it has held up after 200 years of being knocked about in the sea!
I look forward to seeing how you transform the red glass into a fish!
So inspiring to walk along the shore with you!
Looking forward to seeing more of your discoveries and art.
My best wishes for your good health, prosperity, and joy!
Dianna *Maryland, US)
Thank you for another awesome video! Loved the fish getting away montage... your videos are always entertaining. Loved it again!
Thank you Chris
Hi Nichola, what a great morning you had, an the cormorants trying to ear that fish was awesome to watch thank you.
Oh yeah -- one of my favorite pieces of movie music -- from Last Of The Mohicans -- great, dramatic music!
Thanks again for another great video some great finds
Astounding to think it all survived the drone of every day life on the river 😳🙏🏻❤️🇦🇺
Nicola, you make a great history teacher as well!!!!😍
Another great video. Happy Hunting.
Lady on the Loo my favorite pipe. It Always gives me giggles
Me too 😃
Love the intro footage and music, Nick: you capture birds in particular so beautifully. Thanks for a great vid on a stormy Sunday afternoon x
Stephe G we’re having storms too I’m in south Ga.
@@marykunselman284 Hello from Tifton!
Thank you
Nicola, your videos smooth my soul, and ignite my imagination. Thank you so much!
my pleasure. so glad
Fabulous pipe!!! I adore the tiny bits- and instantly fell in love w/ the gemmies! My Sunday afternoons wouldn't be the same without you and your larking adventures-- rather like having a favorite TV show that only comes on once a week. Thank you-- and cheers from Maine, USA!
p.s. I always used to bring a soft toothbrush w/ me when I'd hunt an old dump- or the shore. That thick Thames mud is really something!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks Nicola really cool pipes and story plus bird trying to get more than could eat very funny!!!; ), those gas caps still used in the USA!!!
Adore all your excursions! Thank you for sharing with us across the pond!
Thanks for watching Sonya!
Hi Nicola, normally I do not look at how many subscribers people have. Tonight I saw out of the corner of my eye, a long string of numbers. Upon reading it properly, I couldn’t believe how many people finally found you! Congratulations 🎉 on the number of people who have impeccable taste! What I was initially going to comment on was the beautiful piece of Coral you found. The State of Michigan across the pond. Is actually made of two peninsulas upper and lower. Lower is often called the mitten. It is the only state where you can show someone approximately where you live with your hand. It is also surrounded by three of the five Great Lakes. There is a great deal of coral to be found there. They are called petoskey stone and are the State official stone. Check them out on google. They come in all different stages of coral growth as well. Thank you for all of the time, energy, and research you put into every video! Hopefully your car was a easy fix. Thanks again for all of your videos!
Thank you very much Noelle
Lovely video, Nicola 🤎
Pretty pink bits 'n bobs today and a funky pipe..well done Thames!
Haha! Thanks for sticking with the Cormorant vs. fish drama.😁
It was compulsive watching!
When you say BEST EVER it’s not just clickbait. Superb! That Louis Fiolet pipe bowl is amazing. I remember the “girl on the commode” episode. Do women really poop tobacco? I remember Esso here in the US. It became Exxon then ExxonMobile over here. I’m not old enough to remember Pratts. “Doing lines” means something altogether different here in the US. The incredible research and history you give us really brings all the people who are connected to your finds back to life. I can’t wait until someone explains those brass bullet looking things! Great episode. Thanks!
Thank you!
@@nicolawhitemudlark Esso is actually the short form for Standard Oil of America .. S.. O... founded by J. D. Rockerfeller and friends in 1870 ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Oil quite the history in names as it was broken up and merged and remerged over all the years
Still have Esso here in norway
Thanks for the extra bit of Esso history! What fun. Still Esso in Norway? Almost surely part of the big conglomerate.
@@cdiana1 It's still Esso in Canada as well.
What a good mud Loving day and a great pipe! As always, the wildlife footages grands as usually. Now I seen you and Si Finds for this Sunday, I can say it is complete. What great detail on the pipe! No wonder this maker was so popular. Isn't it funny how similar things are found on the same day? I remember metal detecting finding numerous dimes or pennies. One nice summer Eve years back I found four Barber dimes, four Mercury dimes and four Roosevelt dimes and all in silver. Or four or five large US cents. Or three earrings or pendants or a number of some item. And of course being the Pipe Queen of the Foreshore all the pipes in one day. A very entertaining lark I'd say from this end of the Big Pond! I Thank You Kindly Nicola and wish you Love, Light, Peace and Luck on the Thames. And I must say again that the phone interview with a man on death row for 37 years still sticks with me. I do think about him from time to time. DaveyJO in Pa.
Opening shot of Thames Tideway Tunnel, Tunnel segments being delivered by barge, good history capture.
Oh excellent thank you! And I had no idea!
Some really sweet treasures - very nice links of gold and super pipe bowl - incredible condition!
You are definitely queen of finding those pipes! Every time you spot them I am amazed!
I love your videos. My daughter and I watch them on the weekends in the evenings after we’ve gone detecting around our neighborhood and we are floored by some of your finds. We live in central Oklahoma and can only dream of finding all the relics that you do.
Wow ... that fish battle was epic! Oh, and your finds were great too, lol 😉
Nice finds ! That Bird trying to eat the fish so much wider than it's head reminds me of myself at 5 years old with an ice cream cone.
Thanks nicola another amazing video...loved the pipe...and little jewels...xx
Wow! Great pipe find Nicola! That's a keeper. This one is the motherlode. Just because your car wouldn't start! And the coral is very cool. Enjoy it all in good health luv. ✌🏻😘
That one pipe you found was nice. You and sci are a lot of fun to watch. Thank you from Canada
Great video Nicola, wonderful pipe bowl and pink pretties. Lucky fish for sure. Thanks so much, I look forward to your next video.
Hello from Kentucky. Love your videos, they’re always so refreshing and restful to watch. The pipe bowl is amazing, especially so considering how long it’s been lying in the Thames. I’m sure it’s happy to have a home in your studio now!
Haha...I just watched your video where you reconstructed a lady pipe and paired her up with this guy! What fun you do have! Thanks for taking me along!
Thanks for your research, attention to fauna, French pronunciation, and all round good video-making!
Thank you!
nice watch, even my 8 year old started watching it
Fantastic pipe bowl! Pipes still top of my wish list!
Stunning pipe bowl!
What a beautiful pipe bowl Nicola, you don't half make me jealous with your finds.
Nice! A bird documentary and mud larking
I'm obsessed with your channel. This is exciting
It is wonderful to see how a river recovers after centuries of "lack of understanding" and how nature can find its way back. Of course, people's awareness has certainly changed over the past few decades, but this river was already biologically dead in the 1970s. Of course, the efforts of the official bodies can also be clearly seen. But you Mudlarkers also contribute, if only a small part, to the fact that the river and its banks become clean again. That the whole thing should also be fun is a thing that I especially like to see. I eagerly await every new video. Greetings from old Vienna!
Thank you Tom
Surely you noticed, when editing, that the one clay pipe you found was RIGHT NEXT to a footprint!! You even used the water puddled inside the print to rinse off the pipe!!
I ADORE the tiny pink pendant set into gold! Such a charming bit of history! And when ALL your jewelled trinkets were discovered to be pink...wow!...what are the odds!! 😲
I just love both yours & Simon's videos! I watched them both!! Thx for taking us along again...😘
Ta mate love to see you wandering around the forshore lovely bit's of jewelry i could see meself puffing on one of those pipes thanks for taking me along again
New here, Thanks Hank for the point to this channel!
so good! for sure going to Sub! Nice work such fun! next time im in London, im going to try this out!!
Thanks Don
Love the pipe bowl Nicola! What a find!
I"m so jealous !!! I would love treasury hunting on The Thames!!!!
It seems the birds have brought you luck again. That would have made a beautiful pair of earrings, the one was very beautiful.
loving the cormorant interludes
Wow its Nicola Attenborough - love it as always.
I love it when you find clay pipes. They are my favorite finds. Plus I really appreciate the History lesson as well. Thanks
lovely finds nicola
I was walking along the Missouri River near Leavenworth Kansas in 1987 when I came across a light gauge railroad rail that had been twisted around a tree at one time. I had found a piece of civil war history. Doing some research I found that Missouri rebel raiders often attacked the railroad that served Ft Leavenworth. It has since been devoured by the Mighty Mo.
Thank you
Another good one Nicola, thank you for sharing,
Incredible recoveries!! The pipe is spectacular!!
Lovely finds! Thanks 🙂
Love your clips of Thames wildlife!
Hello Nicola, The coral stone was quite interesting. I live in Michigan and these coral stones are found in abundance on the shores of Lake Michigan especially in the areas around the cities of Petoskey and Charlevoix. In fact we call them Petoskey Stones and they have been named our state stone. They are especially beautiful when highly polished.
Thank you
Hello, Another fan from Michigan, USA… Your video’s are inspiring..
Greats finds today, the pipe is awesome and by the way your French is wonderful. Oui? I enjoy every one of your videos, Nicola.
Great find on that pipe! It’s amazing how the pipes stay so intact in the mud. And the pink jewelry too. Sad about your car. My car is also broken down for some reason. But.... if it had started you’d never had found the pipe so it was meant to be perhaps?! Looking forward to your new finds! Welcome back!
Thank you
Love seeing all your finds. Fascinating!
Wow I love that pipe you found.
Wow what a find, amazing!!
Love these, thanks Nicola 🙂
Some lovely finds Nicola -the ship's ballast piece of coral is beautiful!
