A 17th Century Bearded Wild Man in the Mud - Mudlarking the River Thames with Nicola White

  • Join me for a lark on the Thames foreshore and discover a variety of finds from 17th century modern day. 17th Century stoneware to 21st century plastic.
At the moment there is no mudlarking permitted on the Thames foreshore. The footage in this video was taken prior to the lockdown. I've been enjoying reliving it as I edit this video.
The Thames is like a giant liquid storybook and it holds within so many stories, both ancient and modern. On this video we find a beautiful chunk of 17th century pottery, some 19th century clay pipes and some mysterious items that I would like know more about. We also leave the swans behind for some parakeets living in a tree in my garden!
If you are interested in trying out mudlarking then you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find all the details here:-
    www.pla.co.uk/...
    Thank you for watching.
You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart for more finds and updates.
    Take care. Stay Safe.

Hi All! Please be reassured that the I Am Brett comment is an old joke. I've known what it is for a long while now but I'm glad it has put a smile on faces. Thanks for your super comments and feedback on the video. I have had a lot of comments helping me with "I am Brett". If you would like to see when I first found the infamous "I am Brett" - then here is the link to the video. However, it comes with a terrible finger nail warning. You have been warned. Love Nicola x

Thank you Nicola love going on these adventures with you! I'm in New Zealand, it was so lovely to see the coin, a sixpence, and it has our native bird the Tui or also named Parson bird due to the ruff of white feathers under its chin, a beautiful bird with delightful song., do look it up. Sixpences were in circulation until 1967 when we changed to decimal currency. ❤️

Of course here in Florida we now have all kinds of wild colonies of parrots & parakeets. I’m surprised you have them there as well. It has been interesting, all my photography friends are discovering the interesting things we have in our back yards to point our cameras at. :)

My dad worked for English Heritage when i was growing up and at one point was working in St Albans doing structual restoration on a school built in the 1700's, one day he came home with a really ornate clay pipe and told me he had removed a lose brick and behind it in a little cavity he found the pipe still with the tobacco in it, the next day he took it back to the school and they built a case for it to be displayed in the school.
The pipes you find always remind me of that, a worker who accidentally bricked over his smoldering pipe or simply disposed of it in a creative time capsule like way.

I'm totally amazed each time you go out the history and age of the thinks that you find, fantastic!!!!! And stay well Beautiful Lady.. ;) The other half of the coin is the the love who wore that one. The male parakeets feeds the young, and bring water to them from their chest feathers. They likely have quite a clutch.

Happy Easter Nicola and thank you once again for such a wonderful video and round up and intriguing look at your ongoing growing collections of Thames treasures, The ringneck parakeets incidentally are in the midst of a breeding ritual, they practice feeding rituals prior to laying a single egg which the female on the left sits almost continuously depending on the male, the brighter of the two on the right who feeds her and she is reliant on him taking good care of her during sitting times but also it which strengthens there already manganous bonds for life which can be 15-20 years in the wild. other strains of parrots live up to 90 years plus and some of the oldest being macaws and cockatoos of which I have kept most of. They escaped captivity in the 1970's and have adapted to the British weather brilliantly so yes, invasive but a delight never the less. Take care and stay safe x x

I can’t think why anyone would be banned from mudlarking. It’s not as though you are going to meet anyone else down there and even if you did, you would probably be more likely to infect each other with some waterborne disease! Lovely film of the parrots. Those look like the Quaker parrots or parakeets flocks we have here in Austin Texas. Yes, they are also an invasive species here too, but less than in London. I say less because there had been parrots/parakeets native in the area before humans ruined the area for the natives.

Hey Nic, A little info on a couple of things; your little monkey I believe is a character from "The Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. The parrots look almost identical to the Red Crested Parrots we have here in the San Gabriel valley, California. The only difference being a small red patch on the forehead that our's have. Our's are concentrated in the Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia area. The ones here are also an urban myth, some people say that a few escaped a pet shop fire. At any rate people started noticing them in the mid 1980's and now there are over 3000. I used to live in Monrovia and I can recall their loud screeching waking up the whole neighborhood at dawn when dozens would settle in a tree. The Monrovia city park is famous as a place to spot them. They survive here because our winters are relatively mild and there are a lot of fruit trees. But I'm surprised that you have them in London where the surroundings aren't as favorable! Just thought I'd pass this along, and I never miss any of your wonderful videos.

That was a very special ending Nicola. Watching birds feed their young is so relaxing. Gives one the chance to rest and recharge your batteries. I think those parents, were talking about laying more eggs!

Perhaps you could find some old lead molds and recast some of the fragments. Then we could see what the old lead toys looked like new.

Thanks for the video. I spied some glass fish while you were doing your recap. I hope you are putting some on your Etsy shop soon. I've been checking, but I know they don't last long. 😔
The way that monkey's hands were hooked reminded me of the Barrel O' Monkeys game. I wonder if that's an older version?

Loved your video Nic and the pair of Parakeets were the 'icing on the cake' however ... it's not "I am Brett" ha, ha, it says Lambretta!! I'm sure someone else has pointed that out by now?! Also, I wonder if the ring is a Lovers Knot ring? Thank you again Nic ... keep up the good work (Mum xx)

You are going to have a better museum collection than Australia's National Museum in Canberra where I live.
