Never thought I'd see brake rotors that aren't round. Definitely one of the more creative ways to massively increase the profit margin on a hunk of iron.
Do you have any idea why they are designed like this? Without googling it?
@@maxboya Sure, they aren't round and are drilled in order to decrease their ability to withstand many temperature cycles so that they warp or fracture and the owner has to replace them. Either than that it's purely done for aesthetic reasons. And before you show me your Google scholarship, the cooling benefits are marginal and brake pads today don't gas out almost at all. For degassing we invented slots that don't make your rotors as weak.
A lot of motorcycle brakes aren't round, also most of them are drilled instead of slotted. Maybe some users perceive them as "sportier" than round and slotted ones?
@@maxboya Even google doesn't provide many answers. Slightly improved cooling is one factor but the main reason seems to be weight reduction. We're talking tiny, tiny differences.

LIQUI MOLY is a top german oil brand and it's lead by the owner, family business.
Tiny but fine company
Time for a Taycan.
You'll make a lot of new friends aka subscribers
i'm not sure about that, i know the company, their additives are good but their oil isn't that good in extreme heat, it evaporates really quickly once you have over 3000 miles on it if its over 100 degrees outside, i had an engine rebuilt twice because of it, my ford dealer switched to it under the recomondation of ford europe, now i use castrol 10w40 and its all good, yes i can feel that the engine is a bit lazy but i prefer that to adding oil every time i fill up with diesel
They're a really big oil brand in motorsport...nice quality stuff
It's just a brand. The only important thing is oil specification.
@@biglightball additives can change significantly from brand to brand.
Also, SAE specifications aren't that tight, so there can be a gap even between two oils that meet the specification...a bit like the JP specifications in aviation, you can find specification compliant mixes that still have a lot of shit in them
@@luca7069 Yes, additives vary from brand to brand. There're oil who got better mix of additives, and there're oils with only the standard, basic mix.
Yet, if the engine is in good condition, and it's not defective by design - just a regular oil service is totally everything that engine needs. These extra-super-hiper-fancy additives are mainly for marketing and much higher price.
People ruin their engines not because they were using oil A instead of oil B, but because they neglected the damn oil service.
Love this build series.
My favorite mod to my Audi was the addition of a dipstick. I highly recommend it.
The oil level sensor doesn’t communicate well when dirty, so if you ever get that low oil warning - try cleaning the connector to the oil level sensor before you add oil. I used Super Clean and it was back in business.

Americans that drive euro cars know about it. Americans who don't drive euro cars don't. I like liquimolly and pentosin myself.
Liqui Moly has been very well known for years among European performance car enthusiasts in the USA, but the German-owned company has a relatively small advertising budget in USA compared to its competitors. Within the last 3 years, Liqui Moly has started sponsoring a few major North American sporting events and teams to raise brand awareness. But Castrol, Mobile-1, Penzoil and other brands have been doing that for Decades in the USA, plus they constantly advertising on TV, Internet, etc.. Lack of consumer awareness --> lack of demand --> very few local auto parts stores bother to keep it in stock (special order item). Fortunately, FCP Euro and other online stores make it available!

Liqui Moly is very good oil and "free" is unbeatable. The "Moly" reference is for molybdenum disulfide (MOS2), which is similar to graphite and is mined like iron (ex. up in the iron range of Minnesota). It comes as a dark gray powder and is a very good dry lubricant. I learned about it from my Dad who used it to lubricate during oil drilling operations, so oil companies have used it. It's the real deal. He actually mixed it in during every oil change to his cars in the '70s and '80s and swore by it. I use it now when I do my own changes, but it's much easier to buy Liqui Moly. All newer oils are much better than they were then too, so the lubrication issue isn't as critical because they don't break down as fast. Any of the name brand synthetic oils are high quality, but even with synthetic, I don't run them as long as the manufacturer recommends; sometimes up to 15,000 miles, which is crazy. It's dark brown after 5,000 miles and I use a magnetic drain plug and still get tiny bits of metal off every time ('04 BMW 325i), which was incredibly well maintained before we got it (family car). I buy which every major brand is on sale and stick to the manufacturer recommended viscosity. Cool build, but way out of my league and desire for maintenance pain. Good luck!
As an Audi tech, I’m looking forward to the spark plug video. Good luck!
If it's anything like my 5 series, and it has adaptive cruise control, the extra rear pad wear will be the cruise control dabbing the rear brakes to slow you down hill etc.
Correct. If the previous owner used a lot of Adaptive Cruise Control, in most brands, it is calibrated to use the back brakes to make for smoother decelerations and normally cost least to replace rear brakes than front brakes. I know this the case at Volvo.
I didn’t look through all the comments but I’m surprised nobody mentions that all 4 rotors are put on backwards, the vented disks spin the opposite direction of the way they are currently installed. If you swap them to the other side of the car they will actually work. It’s probably something you should do in the next Video. Unless you want the best stopping power in reverse.
BTW- I only caught this mistake because I made it installing rotors on my M3 and had to redo it. Love the channel. 👍

If the front pads had 80% left and the rears only had 50%, someone previously replaced the front pads.
The braking force is much more on the front then on the back so the wear is different.
Well, the front brakes are expected to take most of the braking load.
But this is a Volkswagen Group vehicle: sime have a feature to use only rear breaks for slow speed stopping, thus avoiding the "dive" of the vehicle when breaking a bit harsh.
So a vehicle seeing a lot of city traffic might actually wear trough the rear pads first

The thing that made me snicker most was your take on the bolts of the oil pan cover. All screws, rivets, and bolts being as much the same size and specs as possible! By the way, pay attention to torque settings as too loose isn't necessarily the problem. Over tightening can be just as detrimental when it comes to removals. PS-- I love your pup.

@Ktube that sucks I understand how you feel my parents are both deaf
As the owner of an RS5, I can confirm Audi uses some kind of super-soft metal compound for the rotors/pads, mine lasted 20k. I went with aftermarket custom rotors, that cost less than the factory Audi ones... combined with after-market pads, they also produce a lot less dust and should last longer. I don't know about the RS7, but OBD11 makes changing the rear rotors a lot safer as you can properly disengage the rear parking brake and reset the brakes using the proper factory computer codes.
I zone out for a couple damn seconds and come back to hear Rich talking about egg carton prices.

idk if your filter kit came with one , you may have just skipped over it , BUT you are also supposed to change out the large rubber O ring that seals the filter canister to the engine. Obviously a normal filter does this automatically with the flat seal ring on top , but with the cartridge style filters you need to remember to do it yourself. Probably wont hurt to forget it once in a while as long as the O ring doesn't get cut , dried out , or scared , but definitely something you want to make note of.

LIQUIMOLY is a well-known and respected oil brand on a global scale, you can trust it. Just my $0.02
It is, and I'm sure they are good "enough". But CASTROL all the way!
Oh wait, may I order a cup of popcorns and start following this oil discussion :P :D
Why do Americans like the Liqui Moly so much when they can buy the good stuff like Mobil1 everywhere?
@moinmoin cuz it seems European and exotic to us, and it’s much more expensive, so it must be better. 😉
Quick tip from a car mechanic here. It's best if you clean up the hubs before fitting the disks. The corrosion underneath the disk can cause brake vibrations and warped rotors. But nice job dude!
Haha, you go Rich!!! Forget those haters. What have they done? Exactly - nothing.
Also, I hope you replaced the o-ring on the oil filter housing as well. ;)
Excellent content as usual! 👌
It would appear you propped this car up using only 2X4's in the thumbnail. Still better than Harbor Freight jack stands.
Got some in the back of the garage sell them dirt cheap 😅💩
@@quallzone6219 coward the ones that were bad were very obviously bad the machining was just straight up off you would have to be an idiot to use them yours were fine
This is my new favourite channel. Subscribed from South West England 🇬🇧 😀
"Doesn't look like 21 in my hands" that's what she said
That’s what pizzagate said
"Your groceries, your captive..."
I wasn't ready 😂😂😂
Helpful suggestion, you probably want a thread file next time, dies aren't good at starting on bad threads, if the threads were in the middle or the other end sure, but starting end no good.
I find this content more enjoyable than the Tesla stuff. More relatable?
After looking at the underside of this car and under the bonnet, I would be more confident about doing Tesla swap into something rather than RS7 into anything other than A7.
17:47 'This is like randomly speaking Mandarin for no reason.. '😂😂😂
You kinda earned your honorary mechanic card when you taught yourself how to rebuild two Teslas and a bunch of other stuff while filming it for our entertainment.
You haven’t seen expensive brakes until you’ve tried to purchase a set of Porsche PCCB’s. Minimum is $20k a set, not including the ceramic pads. 😂
Lol,ceramic brakes cost much more...
That's insane 😂
'Nice looking Audi mate - what's your secret?'
'Green oil'
