Being Disabled on a Cruise Ship?! | Travelling to Norway on P&O Iona

- Join us a we cruise the beautiful Norwegian Fjords on the P&O Iona, their newest ship. As well as showing you the beautiful sights of Norway in vlog form I'll also be talking about the trip & the ship from the perspective of someone with a disability which affects mobility ( I am a ambulatory wheelchair user who also uses a stick or rollator). If you'd like to know more about cruising with a disability ask a question in the comments and I'll film a q&a video very soon! Due to weather there were some changes to the schedule of the usual version of this cruise: we had 2 sea days followed by a day in Olden, a day in Flam, a day in Haugesund and a final day at sea. This is a return trip from Southampton in the UK. On board we enjoy the entertainment including shows & onboard cinema whilst also getting involved in other sporting activities. We were on a budget for this trip so didn't do any of the excursions run by the cruise company but instead did a bus tour in Olden & self hire kayaks in Flam. We has a partially adapted cabin and there will be a follow up video with a full room tour of our partially accessible room.

Pool hoists are mandatory here in the USA because of the ADA act. We had them at the motel that my dad managed.
Great video, thanks for sharing. We went on Iona to Norway in May. My mum was in a wheelchair as she had broken her foot and we found Haugesund very wheelchair un-friendly! It took me and my sister to push her up the steep bridge together and there didn't seem to be any dropped curbs on the paths to cross the roads. On the ship we found using the rear lifts was easier than the middle ones, much less busy, but most people were very thoughtful though and often let us get in the lift first.
This has been an absolute pleasure to watch. I'm glad that Ian enjoyed the cruise, because I've never seen a couple so much in love as the two of you. It was really good to see you enjoying yourselves so much, but also an important reminder to us viewers when you showed your fatigue because of the excitement. I may consider taking my best friend on a cruise when she has recovered from her cancer treatment. Thanks also for pointing out the slight access issues too. Perhaps an advisory committee is out there to help resolve such issues. If not, let's help to form one! Sending Spoonie Hugs and Love ( ( ( x 😊 x ) ) ) 💜
Thank you for the warning about Haugesund being not very accessible. I will definitely be saving my spoons for something else when I go later this year. Glad you had a wonderful trip and thank you for sharing your experience.
you two are the best, thank you for sharing this Jenni. I'm considering using a stick for my fibro/CFS/fatigue/pain, you're very inspiring, I'm a bit cautious (internalised ablism ..)
This is SUCH a helpful video - thank you for taking the time to make it, so many useful aspects - I particularly liked the general video through the corridors, a glimpse at the meals, and some ideas for the stop offs. Good that you were also able to point out potential improvements - hopefully P&O will listen! I'm actually going on this cruise in July 2023...
Brilliant watching your holiday. We were actually on the same cruise and the weather was changeable at best. So we have booked again to go in 2023. We loved the ship, hated the central lifts, and we took advantage of Flamm stop and went on the fab train. Happy crusing.
We go on our first cruise on Iona
MY husband is fully wheelchair dependent... We love Norway Flam Railway is amazing
I also have Multiple Sclerosis trying to keep walking as long as I can...
We are going in 3 weeks time. Very helpful thank you
We were on the same cruise as you. Thanks for letting our little boy share the hot tub with you for the Flam sail away. Oggie Oggie Oggie! Ps, you are in our blog too
Thanks for taking us on your adventure. Glad Ian enjoyed the trip too so more cruises are in the future. 👋🏻 from 🇨🇦
Looks like alot of fun!!
Great video, Jenni! Thank you! xxxx
regarding the parking you must tick when you book but you could have said when you arrived for you cruise for the disabled parking.
Enjoyed that... Thanku for posting.
I was searching youtube for an iona disabled cruise, i#m a mobility scooter user and was curious how life onboard this boat would be. 2021 we did the staycation disney cruise from Tilbury and LOVED it, so BIG thanks for your vlog
We have just been on our first ever cruise to Italy and Spain with Tui and it was wonderful . I’m hoping to book a trip to Norway so I found your video really interesting, as I’m a wheelchair user with severe M.E / Fibromyalgia and other bits lol . I felt very similar to you by the looks of it , as the holiday progressed I had to spend more time sleeping in between trips and food 😜. Thanks for the tips , may come in handy 😋.
I'm on this cruise tomorrow!
Just watched your cruise to the fjords on the Iona. My partner is gluten intolerant. You mentioned that you ate gluten-free food. We were wondering was there a good choice? We both want to stay that we enjoyed your blog.
Hi really informative video thank you. My wife and I are going on Iona next May and she uses a wheelchair do they embark people with disabilities first or last or everyone mixed together. This will be our first cruise so we are really looking forward to it.
Enjoy your trip! I have never been on a cruise either! Hope you have lots of fun !!! That’s what angers me, people who are able bodied rushing to use the elevator or the handicap parking lot. I can understand people who use the elevator to push their baby stroller because it’s hard to carry a baby stroller up and down the stairs!
We had such a wonderful time thank you! It's so tricky i definitely think some kind of priority system for the lifts at least on embarkation and disembarkation days wouldve made a big difference!
@@ChronicallyJenni your welcome! I hope next time you go on a trip, they have that fixed.
Hi, how did you get on the ship? Gangway? Was it enclosed? I use a mobility scooter. Can they be taken on?
How do you travel your neowalk sticks? I notice you brought many (something I would like to do on my next trip) but I worry about them breaking in transit. Have you ever had an issue?
We didn't fly so was fairly easy, 2 of them did go in a case just wrapped up in clothes and they were absolutely fine and then i just hooked the others onto my walker with me. I'm so glad cruises let you take as much luggage as you like because I took 6 sticks haha 😂 I honestly dont know what i'm going to do or how I'm going to choose when I get on a plane again someday haha. This is my first holiday since I've had my neowalks so hard to say long term but i find them pretty hardwearing x
@@ChronicallyJenni you are a credit to the company!
@@ChronicallyJenni thank you!!!
