    According to the banner at the beginning of the telecast, I can deduce this telecast was November 27th, 1971. I was a month and a half old. My best years bowling league off and on between 1984 (13 yrs.) to 1997 (26 yrs.) Never got to watch telecasts this early, obviously. Thanks for sharing 👍.

    All Johnny Petraglia needs is a bow tie, vest and jacket and it'll look like he ran from his Sr. Prom to bowl on this show. To be honest, this is the 1st time I've ever seen a bowler on TV wearing a long sleeve shirt - EVER.

      Laub in long sleeves as well, and a sleeveless sweater on top. Was it really cold in there? The difference in era was evident from the guy in the front row smoking a cigar. Reminds me of air travel back then. You had a smoking section where you could smoke, and a non-smoking section if you just wanted to smell the smoke without lighting one up yourself.

      Until Earl Anthony came along, for me, bowling was the 1 sport where i liked EVERYONE, was happy for all who won. Sure, i had favorites Don Johnson, Jim Stephanich, Carmen Salvino, Dickinson, Teata)but i was happy for all. Then Anthony came along and started dominating and it got on my nerves. Then 2 more joined him….Holman…Roth. lol

    Don Johnson enjoying his first of two years as bowler of the year...before the SOAKER changed the rules of bowling. Kind of quaint compared to today, where I can throw my reactive resin ball down the lane, get 4 revs, hit thin, and blow the 5 pin into the 7, off the wall, and into the 10.

    Trying to figure out the logic of holding the left pinsetter in the down position while each bowler was up on the right lane. Just a little OCD about this I suppose.

    • @thrrsn350
      @thrrsn350 7 років тому +1

      It was related to the new automatic scorer shown around the 10:30 mark. If I recall correctly, after the bowler finishes the frame, the pinsetter stays in the down position until the next bowler selects their name on the dial (its the white pedestal behind the ball return). Once selected, it would set the pins as normal. While I've never used one, I've heard from others they were a huge pain in the ass to fix, physically and financially.

      I'm sure they had something to do with the new scoring system that was installed at this center at the time. Never saw them used anywhere else other than in this video, and the other comment about it being a pain probably explains why. Also notice the deck coming down after first AND second balls, normally the A-2 only comes down after the first one.

    Easily the worst bowling broadcast team in television history. Kyle Rote was totally monotone and had no grasp of the game of bowling, and Buzz Fazio, as much as I liked him as a player, just never had the knack for commentary. He was monotone, too, and added nothing of value in terms of commentary, frequently sounded confused, and often spoke so softly, you could barely hear him. Neither man could ever articulate exactly what was going on in terms of scoring and what the players needed to to to win or stay in the match. Speaking strictly as a career broadcaster (which I am), it's no accident that these two gentlemen only worked a small number of bowling telecasts. They were awful. Great to see this old telecast, though.
