One of my favorite Pawns was a 93 year old female pod crash refugee doctor (16) with Dementia hearing loss various scars that slowed movement and heart issues. She later became frail between her Dementia wandering and cleaning duties she loved to take care of animals and heal everyone. I got a mech serum cured her Dementia and Bionics ended up making her godlike and cured all her negative health problems.
Yeah, if you can keep them alive until you can bling them out, they can become pretty awesome. And the story along the way can be quite entertaining!
I wanted to do the same with one of mine! But she got kidnapped during a raid because raiders spawned too close to where she was (I didn't notice she fell asleep really far away from the base while hauling something), I tried to chase the raiders but our leader died as a result.
Originally bounced off this game because it was too confusing. After watching this I gave it another shot. 2 years and almost 2000 hours later all I can say is thank you so so much for giving me the tools to fall in love with this masterpiece!

2 things I remember from my first playthrough so far:
- A single guinney pig can eliminate several pawns
- clicking through 19 notifications about roof collapse after a large fire. Can't just ctrl+click on something to get rid of it, no, I have to open and close each instance of the notification. This is when I knew I needed mods.
Some rodents have mean streaks a mile wide!! 😆

I've had it for a while because it sounded like my kind of game. Struggling a lot harder than I did with Crusader Kings.
Hmmmm - I've never played any of the Crusader Kings games. Add them to my list! But yeah, Rimworld can definitely be tough, but once you get past the initial learning curve and get comfortable with any given world going to hell in a handbasket, it really is a lot of fun!

Glad I could help! And yeah - I think that's a pretty common problem, especially for games that were in early access / beta for a long time. People might have made beginner's guides back when it was new, but once it goes into release and gets further updates, those older guides quickly become obsolete!

Yeah, this is definitely one of those games where the difficulty can unpredictably scale without you knowing it. You think you're doing well, and suddenly you get a huge raid with no chance of surviving! Been there - done that. Many times!!

Get simple sidearms. Some guns are good at close range but terrible at long, and some guns are good at long range and terrible at close. Even better at close - a good mace!

I've also lost my fair share of pawns to pesky little squirrels. Not after Sal recommended the Simple sidearms on his (so far hopefully) one and only livestream. Yay for the ability to shoot and stab!

Wait - outsiders as in neutral visitors to your colony, or your run-of-the-mill raiders? The latter always likes to burn things, but I haven't ever had any problems with the former!

How early are you able to start planting up there? We got some peas in the garden last week, and actually just moved our fence so we can put in a bunch more garden boxes. Going to start growing ALL THE THINGS! Sadly we sometimes get frost through early May, so stuff like tomatoes usually don't go into the ground until around Mother's day.
@@salendrak Ah! End of May, early June for tomatoes. I'm on the border of Zones 5 and 6.
Greens, beets and other earlies are going in now. I put tomatoes out early(now) and put plastic over the beds (green house). Otherwise tomatoes go out in June. Beans and cucumbers in late May/June.
Lost my fruit tree blossoms from frost in late May the past 2 years. ;-(

@@dreadnought2024 Sounds pretty similar to us. We're technically in a zone 6, but since we live up on the hillside we sometimes get later frosts than down in the valley. We've got lots of tomato seedlings and a few other plants growing inside for now, but peas are in the gardens, and other cold-hardy crops will go in the garden soon too.

I honestly tend to go back and forth. Sometimes I like the totally random game that Randy offers, but sometimes I like the rhythm you get with Cassandra. Not sure I've ever played Phoebe for a full run though...

Rimworld is so frustrating that it’s addictive, so frustratingly annoying and difficult to get a good start that I makes it really difficult to enjoy, because once I’m feeling good something comes to ruin everything and leave me without any hope of surviving, i do everything I can to start myself off good, and everything to give myself an advantage and I’m still left starting in winter or permanent summer when I’m not prepared for it
It definitely is a rollercoaster ride!!

Hey! Fantastic series! I’m new to RW but it has me completely hooked now. I subscribed to the mods you listed but when I load the game I get a debug screen now with a bunch of messages. Any idea if something has changed? Thanks again!
It might be that the mods are in the wrong order. Libraries like Harmony (and of course the Core mod - which is the game itself basically) have to be loaded first. Try hitting the "Auto-sort mods" button below the mods list and see if that helps. If it doesn't, I think there is also a mod that will figure out the right order for your mods, but I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head.

How do you get the buttons smaller at the bottom of your screen? If I click 'orders' for example, my buttons are stacked two-high and take up nearly a third of my viewing screen. Yours seem to be compact and all in a single row. Thanks!
Go to Options -> Interface -> UI Scale and adjust the scale to make things bigger or smaller. I've got mine set to 1x, but I'm not sure what the default is. Are you sure you don't have any mods that make further adjustments? It might also be due to your game resolution settings up in Graphics. Hope that helps!
@@salendrak It's probably more about the resolution of my screen, but I was able to find a solution that helps. There's a line in C:\Users\Owner\AppData\LocalLow\Ludeon Studios\RimWorld by Ludeon Studios\Config where you can change the UIScale. Easy to access. I just set it to .85. Maybe this will help others with similar issues. Thank you. Great videos!

But as is the nature of games with complex mechanics and steep learning curves, all too often you don't know that you've made a mistake until it's too late to fix it!!
@@salendrak Nah I don't mind it is my first save anyhow and was totally expecting to not even make the first year... well one had a very bad drug addiction and got that sorted in the hard way since I didn't grow any of that stuff. Not fatal but now drug free.
But I would totally be more cautious with a new start.
Oh by the way... would you create a Steam Workshop collection with your recommended addons? With this we wouldn't have to search all one by one and just click subscribe to all. And you can change it at any time if needed.

You should! Graphically it looks pretty bland, and honestly I had zero interest when a friend first showed it to me. But once I actually played it I was instantly hooked!
Just started the game completely blind. First play through a deer killed one of characters so here I am trying to learn how not to let them die.
Gotta watch out for those deer - they seem all cute, but they can be deadly!!
@@salendrak It's pretty overwhelming. Your videos have been helpful. There's just so much to learn, just from the technical aspect. For example, the game doesn't teach you how to heal.
When they don't have experience in a skill or don't have levels in a skill and try to do the skill... does it 100% fail? or does it just give much reduce chance to succeed? And how does that affect how fast they learn the skill?
Not a guaranteed fail, just more likely, which wastes time and resources. I'm not sure though how it impacts experience gain...

Sometimes those old pawns turn out ok. And sometimes they become total deadweight!
I know you haven't made a RimWorld video since these ones, but would you consider an "all DLC guide", and what "steps" you need to do for each DLC in a new colony? Between Royalty, Ideology, and Biotech, the game feels overwhelming for a new player.
I honestly haven't played the DLCs much at all. Just a little bit of royalty, but so far I haven't even touched Ideology or Biotech. Maybe one of these days once I get them solidly under my belt!

Is there a mod to smoothen out how bad food consumption ruins you in the first year of a colony?
I'm sure there probably are, though I've never found it to be a problem depending on the biome of the map. Particularly in a temperate forest (even if it has a decently big winter) there's usually plenty of foraging the first few weeks, and thereafter usually plenty of animals to hunt. It's all part of the learning curve I suppose!

I am at a loss as far as what story is being told. The interface just seems to allow construction and commands. Is my colonists getting bitten by wild animals the story?
Basically! The game doesn't have any sort of a pre-scripted story or anything. Rather, whatever happens to whatever characters you have IS the story. And sometimes it can get pretty zany!!
@8:09 - Just a heads up, but this is moodded content. The vanilla game will only have 1 oof each type of faction. Pretty sure that is the only mistake in this video.
Wait, by default there is only one of each type of tribe, but are you saying the ability to change the numbers of each type is mod-based? I didn't think I had any mods that changed that function, but it's been a while since I made this video...
@@salendrak The shortcut arrows are mod-based. Apparently one can remove or add extras as vanilla. Not sure if this could be done in earlier versions (I'm a recently returned player, thus the refresher :P) but it can with 1.4
what about starting on a river? a water wheel seems like it should be a much better source of power than a wind farm or solar panels.
Also a good approach! I've never actually used those before, largely because I mostly learned the game before they were added 😆
@@salendrak i just did some research and i may be wrong but... i am so mad. How can these "water turbines" be worse than wind turbines in almost every dimension. Wind better be crazy inconsistent.
@@MaestroAlvis My general rule with energy is that the best bet is a mix of options. That way if the weather / events / raiders / storyteller etc knocks one or more out, you have backup options available. Wind by itself can be iffy, although batteries help to offset this.

Great video, I started a new colony, a rabbid guinea pig attacked my medic (and only male) and ruined everything. My run ended because of a FUCKING GUINEA PIG
