The number one thing holding up my progression is the popularity of the beaches where I surf. I practice my pop ups at home, I exercise, I watch all these vids, but when it comes to paddling for the unbroken waves my mind isn't really focused on what I've learnt, but rather 'Am I taking someone else's turn on this wave? Am I going to drop in on someone in this position? Am I going into that bodyboarder?' Sometimes it seems the only safe bet as a learner is to sit on my board and watch the others. I caught a great wave at the weekend, popped up beautifully, only to see I'd dropped in on some guy. I quickly bailed off backwards but my legs catapulted the board into the air straight into his direction, took him out too. I'm not making any friends down there :-D
It can be hard to navigate the surf at all levels. Being aware of your surroundings and other surfers is a great start, like you have been doing. Maybe try another beach?
@@HowtoRip Yeah. I like this beach. The surf is often good, car park is on the waterfront, it has a café and showers, but everyone else likes it too. Definitely time to try another more secluded spot if I'm going to progress.
This video was exactly what I needed! Because of the many many other videos I’ve watched of yours I’ve learned how to pop up and catch unbroken waves but I’ve always gone straight. I’m just learning to trim and I think this will help a lot! Also, as you guys recommended I switched from a 8’ foamie to a 5’7 fish (which I thought would be waaaaaaay too small ) and I can actually pop up and ride 9/10 times. Thanks a ton guys!

Hi guys. Good video, thanks. I'd love a video on how to do 360s on the surface of a wave. On your forehand. Body movement, wave section, board choice, how to practise for it on land etc.
I often find myself too deep on the wave like the surfer at 4:41. Other than the obvious being in the right position. How do you prevent this? How do you know where the right position is going to be?
More time in the water and experience. Eventually you start to recognise what a wave is going to do, eg: stay open or closeout or provide you with a section, etc...Look down the line so you can see what the wave is going to do.
Thanks guys! This is the most useful video I've watched since I started learning how to surf. Can you please make a video on how I will know when I am ready to pedal out further to the unbroken waves? I've heard so many different opinions on this. I don't have the confidence to move onto something more difficult until my basic technique is correct. But some say I will advance quicker out on the bigger waves.
Hey Kriszti, thanks for your feedback I am glad you found it helpful. That question is one that only you can answer. Are you confident with your ability to pop up, go straight on the white water with good control, is your paddling technique effective and efficient and what is your water confidence like? These are just some of the questions to ask yourself. It also depends on the conditions for the day, you don't want to go out into big unbroken waves. I would suggest trying it out on a day where there are 1 - 2 foot unbroken waves on offer at a beach you feel comfortable at. Surfing unbroken waves does open up a world of possibilities! Good luck!
Amazing video! I am a super surf baby, still on a foamie, but looking forward to try to do something with my 80l. I know, I know, I am working on it. Thank you!

For the most part, do you suggest intermediates to practice going directly down a wave after take off than learning how to bottom turn back to the top of the wave, making a triangle formation instead of having intermediates focus on going across on the green?
No not directly down as this requires more timing and not every section will allow for this. I think start with getting onto the green and develop your rail game.
@@HowtoRip Thanks for the reply! I have been surfing for awhile and going across the green comfortably but always lack speed in my turns, a surfer told me to practice going up and down the wave to get more speed for turns and cut backs. My question is when I should change longboard to fish or short, some say u need to catch every wave on longboard before switching, but Im Just not sure, tnx 🤙🏻
Well that is up to you. There are pros and cons to all of those surfboard types. Check out our video "You're riding the wrong surfboard here's why". That might help!
when you can confidently catch waves with a longboard/softboard and be able to ride on the shoulder of the wave I guess is the right time. with a shorter board you can learn to generate speed, easy pumps and shorter boards are easier to turn as well, especially on the bottom turn which is the most important turn in surfing. just make sure you get the right volume for your weight, thats the key, the lenght is less important. but generally for an allround board in the beggining make it 2-4" longer that your height with enough thickness under your chest for easy paddling, not a clear round nose but maybe a bit pointy so you can eventually learn to duck dive as well in the near future.. :)

Hi. Beginner into intermediate here with a few years of slow learning experience at a difficult break. To me, your questions indicate that you have not been in the water very much. Really takes a lot of time in the water in my experience. And much core conditioning. The more you work on it, the more you will understand and come back and watch again to understand more. Unless you are a natural athlete, young and in shape, you will need maybe a 50-100 days of surfing experience. My son-in-law was better than me after 10 times though. He's 24, gymnastic athlete. Now I'm wondering if I made the right choice or if I should have gone with lower volume as a beginner on his way to learn what you covered in this video. I heard it's better to focus to get as many waves as possible and high volume helps with that but now I'm not sure. Perhaps you could talk about volume in a future video. 3. It's hard for newbies to read waves. Maybe a video on reading waves, identifying rips and other dangers, figuring out how to identify the shoulder, whether it's going to be a left or a right-hander etc. based on actual footage would be helpful.

Can you please suggest or make a video on how to get past the break in conditions that are like 7 second wave periods with white water hitting your face sometimes twice in a row? focus on sliding your back foot further back when popping up,I used to have this problem too but just slide the board forward a bit and get your back foot back on the tail pad.
Now that you are aware of it Alvaro, just keep practicing trying to get it right. You can practice popping up on your board on the sand (without fins in) or even on a mattress.
You’ve probably got your answer by now. In short, the narrower the tail, the less speed the board will have (very few exceptions). It offers more maneuverability though, so it’s probably best for taller, more powerful waves.

@How to Rip please could you do a video on how to surf the outer reefs of Barley!!!
I have a problem, I’ve been surfing for a while and I’d say I’m what you’d call intermediate. However, sometimes I place my back foot too far forward when I pop up so it’s much harder to turn and do anything on the face of the wave. How can I solve this problem?
focus on sliding your back foot further back when popping up,I used to have this problem too but just slide the board forward a bit and get your back foot back on the tail pad.
Now that you are aware of it Alvaro, just keep practicing trying to get it right. You can practice popping up on your board on the sand (without fins in) or even on a mattress.
Hi, I've been wondering about how the v-shaped tail of a fish board affects the performance of the board. Does anybody know?😅
You’ve probably got your answer by now. In short, the narrower the tail, the less speed the board will have (very few exceptions). It offers more maneuverability though, so it’s probably best for taller, more powerful waves.
I start every season from beginner, so this is great! :-P
Not anymore, time to start at the intermediate :D
An expert is just a beginner who didn’t quit!
@@WorkForAvocados Too true! I do get better through the winter but then spend too much time paddleboarding on flat water over the summer and forget everything I've learnt!! :-P
SUP SUP Get a surf skate!!! Ive had a Carver board for over 6 years and I swear by it. You can surf a flat basketball court or even take it to the quarter pipes. I believe if you’re outside of the US, there’s also smooth star. Either way, I swear either one will exponentially improves your 🏄
@@WorkForAvocados I will! I've been thinking about it for a while, anyway. Thanks! :-D

Cheers Ryan!
hey i’m just getting off my 7’4 board. I’ve been riding open faces and green zones but i’m finding it hard to really cut on my board. Would i need to move to a shorter board to cutback on the open faces?
It will certainly help with turning!
Excelente vídeo.

Go to your local surf shop and ask them
ads during the lesson are annoyingly disruptive.
You need to be more flexible
