  • TCL has just announced a new flagship TV that looks like a pie-in-the-sky prototype, but is an actual TV that goes on sale soon. With 5,000 nits, over and 5,000 local dimming zones among its other-wordly specs, this TV appears to be the most powerful consumer TV ever sold. But, there are few specifics you'll want to know about. We've got the scoop right here.

    Hey everyone! Loving the comments, especially the ones about the obvious overdub later in the video 😂 Yes, it was a hasty overdub, and frankly ridiculous that it had to be done at all. Had to change C745 to P745 because of a last minute change made by … well, not me haha. Recorded with haste on my iPhone. Honestly, didn’t care that it was obvious. I embraced it because I think it’s kinda hilarious, and I love that y’all noticed 😂

      I know they key is for profit, hence the sponsorship of trust video, but are there comparisons to last year's models vs the new models? More focused is: Buying last years top model vs this years mid or budget models. Example: TCL Q7 direct lighting vs yhe 2022 TCL R655 Mini LED TV. Years have differences, like the Sony X95K or 90K wasn't as much as an advance as the X90L this year. (Zones aside) Even buying a discounted top OLED from last year, Say a C2 2022 vs a B3 from 2023 [MLA being a factor] Better example is a Hisense 2022 U8H vs a 2023 U7K. I'm guessing most are very similar. The top tier TVs are the mid budget of a year later. In regards to this video, is TCL trying to cannibalize their own sales? Didn't they just release the QM8, Q7 and Q6 down to the "4 Series". You just up thr numbers to 7 and 8 to trick the consumer. At least it isn't the shady marketing of Samsung over the last 15 years. QLED OLED that.

    I remember when the Hisense UX model was introduced at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year, I was blown away with 5000 local dimming zones and 2500 nits peak brightness. With the same amount of dimming zones and its 5000 nits peak brightness, the TCL X955 grabs my attention.

    Really hope companies like TCL and Hisense can catch up to giants like LG and Sony in terms of software. 5k zones may not mean as much if they go underutilized.

      They have caught up to the “giants” in most cases. TCL QM8 is probably one of the best mini led on the market asides Sonys X95L… the QM8 has 2000 zones and looks superb. So I can’t even imagine more than double the zones also optimized with their chip

    • @Paulie8K
      @Paulie8K 10 місяців тому +1

      @@Tsaunders1307 they are both excellent. I had the LG since December and the deep blacks of OLED is truly beautiful. I do prefer Google TV on the Sony vs LG's platform and the Sony has iMax Enhanced content which is cool. It gets brighter than the LG so I feel the HDR pops more. I only had the Sony for a week so I'd have to do more testing with a variety of content to have a full summary. Both are amazing though. Before getting these two for my new condo, I never spent more than $300 for a TV and had a basic TCL tv which was great but gonna give it away to my in-laws.

      It's because they make all their own stuff. Every piece in the TV, all of it.. except the screws and things like that, are made by them.
      So they directly control costs and don't have to pay a middle man. All their research only benefits them.
      And they want to be a leader in the market and they know the key is value.

      I'd like TCL to give this panel to Sony and they can work their software / algorithm magic and make this an OLED competitor. That will happen in 2025 the earliest, not in 2024, though. Still, curious to see if this pushes Sony to up the local dimming zone count in 2024 to such a high level that they can finally eliminate blooming from their mini-led line up. X95L is close, but it needs double the zones. Knowing Sony, they'll do another +30% zones next year with X95M.

    Man I can tell Christmas is coming - two videos in one day! That’s awesome!
    Although I am not a guy who runs after insane brightness, especially in that kind of number range.. 5K nits and 5K zones is mind blowing, but also, personally I don’t think is needed unless every single wall surrounding the TV is made of floor to ceiling glass with zero shadow around the house. I’m more than happy with my G2 brightness and honestly do not feel like I need any more. And I do have a really bright room. But hey, as a tech concept to push the tech forward I’m all for it. Hopefully the processing can keep up. TCL doesn’t exactly have the best record with that..

    It'll be interesting to see how content providers react to 5000 nits being a consumer possibility. Like you say, most TV shows and movies mastered for the home market are constrained to 1000 nits. However, some providers like Netflix do maintain archival master formats at 10,000 nits unconstrained, so it's not out of the question to derive a 5000 nit master for TV distribution. I would think it more likely we may see a shift towards more 4000 nit material coming out if these super high-brightness TVs become more prevalent, simply because a lot of mastering platforms are already set up to deliver at that level.

    WHY is it that LCD can not do LED-level light control as OLED can? Why does a LED need to light by a "zone"?

  • @sh91899

    I’m very interested but apprehensive that there’s no details about viewing angle. I’m sure it’s gonna be excellent viewing from the center of the couch but this kind of size is great for having friends over and might just look like bright, hot garbage from off angles where my friends sit.
    Would also be awesome if they had a sub and sats option without bypassing the onkyo included.

    Would the QM8, along with an Apple TV device to hopefully with the tv processing issues, be a better option than the X90L? Considering the almost $1500 price hike to the 85" X93L.

      I'm a bestbuy employee who's worked there since 2015. Home theater is my expertise. I'd take the TCL vs sony. X90L is full array backlight vs the TCL mini LED. QM8 will get brighter and the black levels will be deeper. The only thing the sony does better is the video processing. If all you watch is lower quality sources...like cable (720p) then maby it would be worth it. But if you stream or watch blu rays....that are mostly high quality sources...Def TCL.

    • @jrerobert
      @jrerobert 10 місяців тому

      @corytrevor7313 I usually stream apps for movies, sports, and tv shows. Most of the stuff I stream is supposed to be HD, and I have a 500 Mbps internet speed. But I had a bad experience with my QM8 when it came to picture clarity on certain streams. I definitely loved the HDR part of the QM8 that I'm not sure if i would get from the X90L since it's laking both the contrast and the brighter. I recently started to hear that maybe an Apple TV device could help with the processing clarity of the TV? Do you know if that's true? Because that would be my main issue with the QM8.

    • @corytrevor7313
      @corytrevor7313 10 місяців тому

      @jrerobert watching content that is only HD will limit the performance no matter what. The sony does have better processing so it might clean it up a bit...but it won't be a night and day difference. HD content is good...but it's not going to WOW you. Like I said look up a 4k hdr video on UA-cam for free and see if that looks better.

    TCL really needs to fix its naming scheme. Different namings between US and Europe, and then it just goes in all directions with no indications of which tv is supposed to be superior to which. Not sure how a regular consumer is supposed to figure anything out.

    Where does this end? They new G3 and A95L are objectively insanely bright. Only the brightest of rooms would be able to combat the brightness, because if you’d watch this in a purely dark room, your eyes would get zapped.

    • @paulcox2447
      @paulcox2447 10 місяців тому +1

      You turn it down for a bright room. The brightest modes are for the bright rooms. The G3 and a95L are not bright full screen.
      5000 nits in real life isn't blindingly bright. Full screen would be, but highlights with a 2k full screen.... That's just a badass tv lol

    • @pabzy2
      @pabzy2 10 місяців тому

      @@paulcox2447 do you have a bright TV, as in do you know the nits of your TV?
      In a light room, the bright TVs in my experience are generally fine. The problem is in a dark room when you want to watch a HDR movie. Some of the highlights can be genuinely bothersome. I'm in my 30's, have excellent eye sight, and no history of sensitivity to light. So I have to assume that some people, who do have these ailments, would genuinely find the brightness too much.

    Ive been a fan of TCL since the 2018 6 series. I think brighter can help (especially when watching HDR), however I really hope they focus on better processing power like the "big guys". I was sold on mini led but TCL current flagship seems to be on par with Sony TV (with Sony having less "tech"). I'm excited for this TCL TV and really hope the "tech" can match it's compute on how it projects images.

    Even if a movie is mastered to only 4000 nits the content is still able to exceed that. Mad Max Fury Road hits 10,000 nits multiple times while only being mastered at 4000 nits.
