    Can you run a Ram Pump in freezing temperatures? Yes, but be careful to make sure the Ram is running well and has done so for a period of time.

    Another great vid, but I think that pump would freeze up solid in the north where the temps are a lot colder.

    @loxpidor I keep an eye on it. The PVC will break before the ram does. I have babied this ram for 14 yrs, nothing broken so far.

    @dexterquincy1 I guess the other folks got to you first. The water you see as "wasted" is water that was flowing out of an overflow anyways. I just use it to pump water. The energy from falling water is what powers the Ram. Roughly, for every 7 gallons wasted 1 gallon is pumped to a usable destination. Thanks for watching.

    Nice pump. Looks like it's doing a pretty good job keeping the water moving so that it doesn't freeze as quickly.

    @CurrentWave the Ram is not for everyone and it is hard to find sites that work for Ram any way. But if you can, it is the lowest cost, coolest way to pump water!

    @Mopardude Well we have had some stretches of teens for a few days from time to time. Plenty long enough to break the Ram/piping. I have installed these at location in Western NC at elevations over 4000 ft where the cold sets in. They are comparable to where I am from - Upstate NY.

    Do you offer your plans for this?
    I live in Idaho, and although it normally will get between 5° and 50° at night, one night it was -2°. I probably need something like this better built one so that it doesn’t freeze up.
    And can you recommend where a person might cover it to insulate it? You obviously have the experience I need.
    Thank you for any help you can offer. my husband died and I’m having to do all of this type of thing by myself with a little help from a friend.

    @dexterquincy1 Water is not wasted... in fact the energy is being used to pump the water uphill while and the remaining water goes back to the stream source.

    I would bet the spike in pressure adds a little heat to the water, compress a fluid and it heats up. Also the sound waves through the water would be intense and may stop water crystals forming.

    I noticed you using galvanized pipe. Why couldn't you use poly for the influent side of the ram? I'm wondering if it has something to do with stretching or give? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    Pull a drain pipe at the very top of the larger tank, and let the overage drain into that smaller tank.
    You'll have two tanks that have flowing water, that won't freeze.

    good day.sir, i have watched your videos on how to make a ram pump.im just interesting to know if your ram pump has a snifter valve?because other designer they put a snifter valve..Is the snifter valve necessary or optional?Hoping for your kind response.many thanks...

  • @engineer775

    @dexterquincy1 That would be a challenge! it is not impossible as I have seen Rams installed in pits and all piping was below the frost line. Just a lot more work where you live. The cool thing about doing a deep install is that it would be silent. Thanks for watching.

    This is good info I have always been curious about this but it also brings up more questions. Your in a southern state, on the occasions where you get freezing weather you are barely breaking the freezing point. How do you think this would fair in a northern state?

    I'm not familiar with any of this stuff but I'm learning slowly but surly! I have a question. What about all of that water that is wasted? Does its have to expel water like that and if so can that water be captured and used?

    • @robot797
      @robot797 9 років тому

      a ram pump waists 90% of the water to pump 10% up
      it cant realy be improved
      but you dont have to waist power on electricety

    • @spencerwilton8876
      @spencerwilton8876 8 років тому

      +robot797 It's not really wasted, you're only diverting it temporarily from whatever stream or river it operates from. This water would ordinarily have simply flowed downstream, instead you are extracting it higher up steam and returning it a little further downstream, and in doing so using the potential energy it possesses to pump water uphill. No water is really lost in the process.
