Great performance. Encapsulates what I love about 70s NYC. With Whitneys glorious scream at the helm, its like listening to the traffic and pulse of the Neon Beast that never slept. The Beast may have been tamed, but NYC is still a wondrous City.
I've never heard of Marva until being recommended by UA-cam. And I'm loving what i'm hearing. Marva has a high pitch that is AWESOME. And she was BEAUTIFUL.
this is from a show called "The Music Scene". An ABC show that was kind of a Saturday Night Live precursor. Lots of skits and a musical countdown...Some of the episodes have been released on video..
Damn, didn't realise Osaka Monorail were touring over here - they're great! If you haven't already seen it, check out the cover of 'In The Middle' they did that's on utube. Perfect band to back Marva Whitney
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Marva Whitney (born Marva Ann Manning on May 1, 1944 in Kansas City, Kansas) is an African American funk singer. She is considered by many funk enthusiasts to be one of the "rawest" and "brassiest" music divas.[1]
Saw her last night in birmingham backed by the totally excellent 'Osaka Monorail' and i have to say it was an incredible spiritual experience, made a deep impression on me.
He was on stage because HE was the one that showed them and expected them to play what He wanted them to play as well as sing and perform. He was listening for mistakes and directing them how He felt at that moment. It was his show and He wanted it his way. If you didn't listen to him or follow his direction, or play exactly what was expected of you, then you didn't play at all. If you did make a mistake you were fined. If it was something more, you were possibly fired.
I call this soul funk jamming sessions with beautiful color sisters like her getting down on the good foot can you dig it brothers and sisters out there. Peace and much love to you all.
Two drummers and all guitars and amps supplied by Vox ! The (competent) piano is probably then-musical director Pee Wee Ellis. And best of all it's LIVE in the studio !
For the record, on that scene in Vietnam, she was the woman who went over there, and she was mentioned in his bio as the singer who went over there. Also, he noted on how he stuck to his lead singers(except perhaps Vickie Anderson because she ended up marrying Bobby Byrd). and as you can see, he is leading the band here.
@namkooc Please be quiet...My Uncle and Aunt were natural blondes and they were light skinned Black (of course not pale blonde but golden and they looked normal)....This was probably a wig. You don't determine what we look good in any way! We do. She looked beautiful.
Your're right; however I just felt it was in poor taste; judgmental. I prefer to think the best of everyone until I know better - especially when it's someone I know, and as I've said I know her and she was a very nice young lady then. No hard feelings, though. Have a great evening and thanks for the response. Peace-out!
Why are people saying R.I.P.? I haven't heard a damn thing about her dying. It would be all over the news if she did, like Whitney Houston or Michael Jackson.
someone should have wrapped a guitar or something over his head lol, fair play he made incredibvle music but he really was a tit. marva... if i could fantasy time travel i would ask two things of you 1stly to sing for me and 2ndly any chance of a ride..the blonde fro is doing it big!
@gittahfiend I knew Marva Whitney in high school. She and her entire family are well respected, Christians who live in the KC area. You are entitled to your opinion about her voice but not entitled to make a random, disrespectful comment about her integrity. She didn't have to sleep with James Brown to get a contract. The woman can sing and still sings all over the world! What have you contributed to the world other than your rather narrow opinion? I think your opinion is annoying.
she was SUUUCH a singer. How she leaps, casually, with the voice to this and that. Magnificent.
R.I.P. Marva Whitney

Even if you don't like her voice, you can't say you don't like her mouth.
auuu, auuu, auuu @ 1:25
The Transatlantics did a great cover :)
She was one of James Brown's women. If "Get on up" had shown all the woman James messed with. The movie would have been 8 hours long! Lol.
For the record, on that scene in Vietnam, she was the woman who went over there, and she was mentioned in his bio as the singer who went over there. you should listen to her song "your love was good for me" if u really think she can't sing.
2:31 I've heard that noise before.......
What is up with the blonde fro?
Now, was James Brown on this show also? If so can someone please post his part?
James brown conducting the band !

Looks like Mr. Brown was off the mark @ 2:31
Why are people saying R.I.P.? I haven't heard a damn thing about her dying. It would be all over the news if she did, like Whitney Houston or Michael Jackson.

Oh, no you didn't!
she was bad!!!!
You call that singing. lol
The A section is out of sync. The record is much better.
Why you want to sample? Why not create some great real music yourself.
