The irony of African American Music in the 60s & 70s especially for me is that it overwhlemed us with so much genius that we took singers of Marvas ilk for granted in a way, as if it was always going to be the norm to have singers of her ilk. Decades later from being a kid in the 70s I am only just beginning to really appreciate the monumental artistry of the likes of Whitney.
Playboy After Dark aired from Jan 1969 to May 1970. Marva had left James shortly after they did a show at the RKO Albee in March 1969. This is from Playboy After Dark, Episode #1.17 which aired in 1969.
Gosh! Someone named Whitney who doesn't sing bland anodine pop! Only know 'Don't let our love fade away' by her which is similarly wonderful. That was fantastic. Thank you to the person who posted it and to Ms Whitney.
Ab-Soul-utely. IMO, Whitney Houston took the emotion (gospel/soul) out of the Black American music that I'd grown to love and left it bland and empty, replacing it with an exercise in running up and down the scales for the sake of it, which even gospel music has adopted. I'd bought her first album on the strength of her mother's reputation, but it left me stone cold emotionally and I sold it within weeks. Her subsequent output only confirmed my opinion. She was a stylist with none of the warmth of a Nancy Wilson, let alone Aretha!
Soul Sista No 1.This little ladae could sing, and is definately more than a mere prodigy of the Godfather of Soul. All you soulless,r'n b MTV Base hoochy mamas take note of what real music and singing is about.Being sexy ain't about runnin' round in a camisole & flashing ya booty!

No vocal gimmicks or acrobatics are needed when you have genuine Soul. This is! Soul at its raw best. And I like my Soul served rare.
Outstanding.
