Omg! Ty for doing this video! Before I get into my thoughts, I do have a question:
When you're accepted into a residency, do they send you a tax statement for it at the end of the year (that you then have to file taxes on? Or is it truly "free" (except, of course, for your travel)
Also, how did you handle references?
I was thinking of applying to the Atlanta one but after hearing your story, I don't believe I would feel comfortable in that type of environment AT ALL. I was really looking forward to applying to the La Maison one (as you would think they would have their stuff together). But I recently watched a video about the conference they did and the "guide" seemed a bit "off" to me and I couldn't quite put my finger on what my hesitancy was (as I love Baldwin and was humping for joy when I first learned of this residency). I'm from Cleveland and I'll have to look up the grant you talked about in a previous video (to help vover your website costs, etc.). When I looked up the Twelve Arts residency, it kept leading me to some page that just talks about the program (but not where to apply). I'll figure it out. Looks like i missed the deadline for Sangam House but I'll definitely keep checking. Totally excited to apply to The Studios of Key West. Unsure about Norton since i don't think they have a restroom in the cabin? And I would need to see if I could at least be in a cabin is close to a bathroom.
Its been hectic trying to apply to all of the residencies by their due dates, but I'm hoping I'll get in to at least two. So far, I've applied to two (and I'm getting ready to apply to two more). I want to apply to six in total and have space leftover to attend at least one genre specific conference and one general one (with some type of lectures on black writers). I've applied for scholarships to those and FEE WAIVERS for the residencies! I have low income so I need all the help I can get, ok? And there are a couple I want to apply to that won't open for application until earlt next year. I'll try six more then. I just want to do at least one out of all of them, although I know they're kind of competitive.
In the between time, I'll keep writing. One way or another, I'll finish my book and go on to write more.
    Much continued success. God bless!!

Fantastic. This is just what I was looking for. You're so right: there isn't enough content out there on residencies...Thank you so much for making it happen!

What other kinds of videos on artist residencies would you wanna see?

@@PrinceShakurUA-cam I loved the videos of you previewing your experience - the Norton Island one was so much fun. Anything like this in the future would be awesome (if it vibes with your goals/process, of course)!
It would be so helpful to have more video reviews like yours to help us make informed decisions regarding what to apply for. How is there so little content out there on what the residencies are actually like?! (Also, how is it so normalized to apply blindly to an experience that often doesn't even show pictures of where we'll be sleeping/living...just a few positive testimonials?! 😂).
Anyway, thanks for the work you've done to make these experiences visible!
