I feel like if you came from goth like The Cure, Cocteau Twins, and Depeche Mode, Deftones probably wouldn't take too much getting used to because they had the same ethereal sensibilities to their sound
i guess i'm fortunate that my local rock station would play them and i always loved their sound but they stood out like sore thumb compared to the other stuff they would play like AC/DC, Ozzy, zeppelin etc. hardly anyone was really into them at the time so glad they are now getting recognition.
I remember reading an exerpt from an old Deftones fan site about how Chino would buy "Murray's" pomade because it was so cheap and would last forever. I had a tin of Murray's for at least 3 years and it only cost 4 dollars. With the addition of frosted tips, I vividly remember adopting that hairstyle around age 11 on a snow day after seeing it on The Young & The Restless soap opera helping my mom fold laundry! Oh wow hahalol.
