  • Con Te Partiro tag by Rasmus Krigström performed by Ringmasters with Brad Grimmer (original video: • Time to say goodbye - tag )
Yes I know this song is like kind of opera, but it's more like "operatic pop". That just didn't sound as cool in the title.

I just wanted to clarify that ''Con te partirò'' isn't opera, but nice video nonetheless 😌

Ok, so I have met people who have very strong opinions on this and I finally did some looking into it and found out why Con te partirò is not considered opera.
It seems to be because opera is a style of musical theater. As in there would have a scrip with parts and several musical pieces. Those pieces would be considered opera simply because they are part of an opera. And, because Con te Partirò is not part of one, it is not considered to be opera.
Now, my question is, wouldn’t it be fair to say that it is in the same style as opera pieces? Or at the very least strongly inspired by? I’ve met people with strong opinions even against that.

@@Vendavalez You could say it's classical singing even though it's not opera ☺Even though both use classical voices and an orchestra, I would not say that song is in the same style as operatic arias, because ''Con te partirò'' uses the musical language of pop music.

@@MaxenceLasserreEngberts "the musical language of pop music" I have definitely heard that but, to the layperson, that is not an explanation.
Some of my younger Italian friends would say that "older [Italian] people just don't want to accept anything that was made after the point they turned twenty as 'real'". I don't belive that is a fair assessment but, again, I don't know.
I do see how people would be dismissive of a dismissive argument like "it's too poppy" ( which I have actually seen in those exact terms). Hence why I ask for at least one example of what element of pop style does Con te Partirò uses that is incompatible with the style of "operatic arias".
Is it just a matter of the composition of particular interpretations? Like, could you take a recording of Andrea Bocelli's first interpretation of it, take the voice, and recompose the music such that it fits to the style of operatic arias? Or is it something more intrinsic?
Not looking for a long explanation just a one or two concrete examples of things with precise definitions that I could look up myself.
Because, while I imagine that many music scholars would agree for the most part, I imagine that there would be some amount of disagreement on what precisely constitutes "the language of pop music."
And, not only that would be a massive research project from someone completely unfamiliar with even the basics, I would have to some a similarly sized research project to determine what precisely constitutes the style of operatic arias to be able to do a proper comparison.
I have always assumed that it would be a massive undertaiking to get the precise answer I crave without at least some guidance from someone who already knows, hence why I am asking.

@@Vendavalez Some examples of musical aspects that distinguish ''Con te partirò'' from operatic music (in other words, things that make it sound ''poppy''):
      - Verse/chorus structure
      - Repetitive and purely diatonic chord progression
      - No modulation within sections
      - Minimal use of orchestration as expressive choices
      - This song is not the best example, but use of syncopation and less focus put on strong syllables falling on the beats
      - As previously said, it is also not opera because it is not part of a story
      Hope it helps!

Just because it's Italian doesn't make it opera🤣
    Sincerely,

p.s. It's "opera" music if it's from an opera. Otherwise it's just classical music. 😉 A closer title would be 'if art song were barbershop' but at least calling it 'popera' would get you a pass from me, ha!

Regarding the "opera" question-- Its not "Opera" because Opera is a staged theatrical piece.
This is a song, sung in a "classical" style
....Donna Summer has a recording of it. People tend to think "opera" because of the voices they often hear singing it 😊
Some musicologists (people who know more than I ... lol) have called Sweeney Todd, Les Miserable and *other* Broadway style shows, Opera, because the meet the basic definition -- story moved forward almost exclusively by music/lyrics
(Not that Any of this matters - just info clunking around in my head)
