Code Orange killed it with The Above, so many nuances & so versatile, the band just keeps improving

@@Brandon-bc5um Mirror is one of my favorites off the album! It's so unexpectedly melodic for Code Orange, it really stands out. Beautiful track, I'd love to hear some more songs from them in that style (along with more of Reba's vocals too!)

You will not be disappointed dwelling into Godflesh discography. Personally I'm not a big fan of the reunion (it's not bad, I just found very few things new.. no reason no to just listen to the classics I know).
The self titled, Streetcleaner, Pure, Selfless are the best, and present different aspects of the same Godflesh-y sounds. If loved those then you should also check the next three albums. Enjoy ! can't wait to see your reaction :)

Being out of radio and not having press outlets asking for my top 10 lists I don't keep up like I use too. Just trying to choose off the top of my head I know will forget stuff. That said....as far as your list I only think heard four of the records and Godflesh and Code Orange would be among my top releases. Tesseract never worked for me and Sleep Token really sounds like nothing new to me but I am also in my 50's. So find it appropriate that Mr. Wilson placed above them because when people ask about recommendations for those who like Sleep Token one of my suggestions is Porcupine Tree.
My favorite album of the year is probably Wargasm (uk) - 'Venom'. It is such a 90's record capturing many of the sounds I loved about that decade (electronic dance, nu-metal) it even guests Fred Durst on a track.
Other artists newest releases I enjoyed: Avatar, Kvelertak, Descartes A Kant, Kontrust, Obituary, Suffocation, King Gizzard & the Electric Wizard, Baroness, Therapy?, and Hot Milk.
Oops there is 10 right there.

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  5 місяців тому

Yeah I really dig the sound on the Steven Wilson album, I definitely need to go listen to some more of his solo stuff and all of Porcupine's Tree discography while I'm at it. I did check out the Wargasm album that dropped this year, it didn't make the cut for me personally but I thought it was really well done and brought loads of energy. I especially loved the Bjork sample on the track Death Rattle, that was my favorite track on the album.

Code Orange album is a top ten for me too. It has a very sinister underbelly to it. Love it, start to finish. Sorry, but I don't care for Sleep Token. The rest of the albums I haven't heard but they sound like albums I would enjoy .
My album of the year is Insomnium's Anno 1696. It's a melodic death metal album that tells the story of the witch hunts in Europe. It's a beautiful journey of an album. Moody, Folky, heavy as hell and beautiful when it has to be. I think you would love it because of the different atmospheres within.

When you get to Porcupine Tree start with *In Absentia* (2003). Ignore everything everything before that, for the time being.
Then continue with Porcupine Tree's releases:
    - Deadwing (2005)
    - Fear of a Blank Planet (2007)
    - The Incident (2009)
Then do Steven Wilson's solo albums:
    - Insurgentes (2008)
    - Grace for Drowning (2011)
    - The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) (2013)
    - Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2015)
    - 4½ (EP) (2016)
    - To the Bone (2017)
    - The Future Bites (2021)
Then go back and finish up Porcupine Tree with:
    - Closure/Continuation (2022)
If you get through all that check out Steven Wilsons other side projects:
    - Blackfield
    - Storm Corrosion
Then, if you want, go back and listen to Porcupine Tree's earlier works before In Absentia.
Their earlier works are ok, but the band and Steven Wilson really took it to another level starting wth In Absentia and really maintained that level through out.

I appreciated your mentioning Godflesh. You should check out Streetcleaner, the album of theirs that blew people's minds back in 1989. Haven't acquainted myself with their new one yet, but I suppose I'll get around to it one day. In the meantime, here are some albums that made an impact on me in 2023:
    Xiu Xiu: Ignore Grief
Mandy, Indiana: I've Seen A Way
PJ Harvey: I Inside The Old Year Dying
Jamie Branch: Fly Or Die Fly Or Die Fly Or Die
Anohni: My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross
Armond Hammer: We Buy Diabetic Test Strips
    Snooper: Super Snooper
Feeble Little Horse: Girl With Fish

They create really awesome soundscapes that can be both beautiful but dark and haunting at the same time. PetroDragonic Apocalypse was solid, just not a standout for me personally. And I actually didn't listen to the Metallica album, I want to keep going in order with the reactions for them here on my channel and figured I'd wait to listen to 72 Seasons. And yeah, Code Orange really found a great sound on The Above. I love how they fuse a lot of different styles on one album, so much variety.

Ex Machina is always a great choice! A sci-fi/psychological thriller released in 2014, one of my favorites for sure. I also always love Bladerunner and Bladerunner 2049, The Matrix, Interstellar. Also anything with a Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross soundtrack (Gone Girl, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social network to name a few). If you want weird horror give The Killing of a Sacred Deer a shot. A very unsettling, odd movie if that's your thing.

The drummer for Porcupine Tree, Gavin Harrison, is likely the best drummer alive today and you owe it to yourself to hear him play along with a brilliant artist like Wilson doing the lyrics and vocals, truly something magical.

For me the one and two spots have been flip flopping between Steven Wilson and Sleep Token. Ultimately I think The Harmony Codex is going to be my number one album of 2023, even though I don't believe it's as good as some of his past work, e.g. The Raven That Refused To Sing and Hand. Cannot. Erase, but I think it's a step in the right direction and is better than his previous solo album The Future Bites. Plus What Life Brings and Time Is Running Out are killer tracks.
Steven Wilson's work is a giant rabbit hole of different styles and directions. Even early Porcupine Tree albums (The Sky Moves Sideways) sound nothing like their later ones (Deadwing) but they're great albums in their own right. In regards to his side projects I highly recommend the lone Storm Corrosion album. It's such a strange and beautiful album, created with Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth. Blackfield is also a great listen, especially the first two albums.
Discovering Porcupine Tree nearly 20 years ago was one of those amazing moments where upon discovery my musical listening habits completely changed. The only other artist/band that has happened with was Devin Townsend, whose work is another rabbit hole I'd HIGHLY recommend going down with all kinds of different music and styles.

      @mollyesanborn  5 місяців тому

@@mollyesanborn Oh, you've got a lot of interesting things ahead of you when exploring SW's and PT's discographies. I'm actually a bit envious, as I have fond memories of listening to the albums for the first time.
The first PT album, On The Sunday Of Life may be a bit off-putting and kinda rough to listen to on the first listen though, but it does start to get better once you reach Up The Downstair, especially the remix with Gavin Harrison's drums added to the album. When you get to Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun you'll likely notice the change in overall style and when you reach In Absentia, that's when "modern" PT begins.
Now for Devin Townsend's music, you can save his band Strapping Young Lad's material to listen to as its own thing. You can also skip Dev's dorky Punky Bruster album, it's not an actual serious album, it's a parody of the times.
For Devin's work, the place to start is with his actual debut solo album, Ocean Machine.
