2:10:00 Yenna is really good with the enchantments that exile stuff. Especially Cooped Up, since you can pay the 3 mana to exile one and then keep copying it
i had a nice green white deck with her and the 5 mana aura for enchanted dude, plus some of the enchantments leave the battlefield effects. great synergies all around, and the untap and scry makes it straight up busted when you have more than 1 type of role around.
The "killer app" they were missing on Yenna is Cooped Up. It's a Common so in my Yenna deck that I had I got two of them, it's an aura, so she gets the untap and scry 2, it's a removal spell, and for three mana you can exile the creature it's attached to, so you can do it repeatedly as the copy goes away. The ability becomes: 4W: Exile Target Creature, Scry 2.
26:55 the first ability on the Sentinel of Lost Lore can get back any of our adventure cards that were exiled by some of the white o-ring effects. Had an opponent get back their mythic white enchantment that puts +1/+1 counters on everything on endstep and it was brutal.
1:57:00 the thing with the red virtue is that red gets access to really good ping effects like Goblin Bombardment, Impact Tremors and the one I’m blanking on which ping them for 1 when a 2 power or less creature attacks. I had one in a rat deck that I played on 6 mana with Impact Tremors in play and 6 mana. Next turn I chained together 3 spells
2:08:42 things I have copied with Yenna: Knightly Valor, Cooped Up, Stab Wound (three times in the same turn), Cursed Role (which makes any creature that takes any damage die).
3-0d (6-0) my first draft of this set. Had a sick WG role/bargain deck. The Princess takes flight card is NUTS if you can consistently bargain it. 3 mana exile target creature, combat stim, and pays for your bargain. So good
Of course WOTC got the templating wrong on "Expel the Interlopers" and "Talion, the Kindly Lord" so they had to explain it in the Rulings section in the Gatherer. It should read: "Choose a number FROM X TO X".
I did put Thunderous Debut in my deck once so far. It was after I got a Moonshaker Cavalry P1P1, I was building around it all draft, and if I'm ramping toward 8 mana anyway, having a second copy of my win condition made sense. That deck went 6-3, and I was lucky to never draw both copies of the Cavalry at the same time.
I played Questing Druid in a RB deck with ways to get green mana and it was a wildly powerful bomb. It felt like a 2 mana divination / tarmogoyf because literally everything in my deck triggered the druid. (Also was splashing for voracious hunter // puny snack and picnic ruiner // stolen goodies, deck was great)
Had Yenna at the prerelease and 'the joke' is she's a build-around alongside Cooped Up (the pacifism). You copy Cooped Up, put it on one of their other creatures, you can then activate it to exile the enchanted creature, at which point you only have one Cooped Up and can copy it again. It becomes 3WW: Exile a creature, pacify another and scry 2. Of course, if they can sacrifice the thing with Cooped Up on, it stops, so you keep around the copy that's on the creature they're least likely to be able to get rid of.
Had Heartflame Duelist in my UR spells draft Deck. I added 1 plains, 1 Evolving Wilds, 1 Grotto and was able to cast the white half sometimes. Most of the time it got removed, but the opponents spend a lot of ressources to do so. Awesome performance. By the way: I love how english/American people pronounce "Totentanz". 😊
Syr Ginger is the lady gingerbread that is the survivor of Garruk's attack in the original Throne of Eldraine cinematic trailer. The trauma of that event led her to become a knight.
Yenna really shines when copying sagas- can essentially reset them. Since white has Cooped Up and Hopeful Vigil...both of which can self sacrifice, you can also continuously make 2/2s and scry like mad or repeatedly exile creatures. Since Yahenna untaps if copying cooped up, you are really only limited by your available mana (2 + 2W per creature).
These are all things that I don't think meaningfully impact the overall evaluation of any of these cards, and more just little things that I think are interesting or worth mentioning. 40:44 A minor note on Heartflame duelist in non-red decks, Kellan's lightblades is one of the common white kill spells, it deals 3 damage to attacking/blocking creatures (unless it was bargained) which is still not that impressive, but not nothing either. 1:32:30 In regards to finding multiple copies of cards you hit with The End; if you're hitting a common card, it's very likely that the opponent saw at least two copies of that card during the draft, but considering that The End is unconditional removal you'd generally not be hitting the sort of bread and butter commons that limited decks like to play in multiples with it, and if you were hitting such a card, I could definitely see "failing to find" being the right play. There's of course always the chance that you run up against the opponent that got a couple copies of a high impact uncommon or rare, but that's just not going to happen very often at all. 1:35:29 I actually have a lot of little things to say about Ashiok. Firstly, I think the only way to pay life in WOE limited is to pull a necropotence off the enchanted tales bonus sheet, so their static ability will almost never matter. Secondly, None of their abilities actually care about how the cards got in to exile, so they naturally synergize with adventure cards. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if one of the common play patterns for them in limited is to play them, -2, -2 again and then cast an adventure pre-combat to put counters on all of your 1/1s. And of course the alternative is to cast some adventures while +1ing them and potentially just win off the ult. And while not exactly relevant to limited, the same synergy applies for flashback and aftermath cards. 1:51:32 As far as I can tell, there's only one and a half equipment cards in this set, there's bespoke battlegarb, and the irencrag (kind of) neither one is especially impressive to me as equipment. Auras on the other hand, aside from the many roles that can be made, the bonus sheet has a few powerful auras like knightly valor and curiosity, not to mention a fair bit of the removal is aura based, meaning that you'll run up against opponents, especially in white and blue, that have two or three removal spells in hand they just can't use on Kellan or they'll die to the rest of your board. 1:57:11 Now that I've seen y'all's thoughts on all the virtues, I'll put them in order of what I think is strongest to weakest for limited (with a line break to denote where I'd stop putting them in most decks) Virtue of Persistence (black) Virtue of loyalty (white) Intangible Virtue (the surprise sixth virtue /jk) Virtue of Courage (red) I will say, there probably will be a few decks that get some value out of casting the enchantment part of this, but for sure not many, as burn that goes face is all either in the rare slot, or only 1 damage. Virtue of Knowledge (blue) Virtue of Strength (green) 2:07:00 Notably, Agatha's cost reduction ability affects herself so you'll pretty much never pat the full six, not that this really changes the evaluation. 2:10:00 I think that using Yenna as a way to burn your opponent out with wicked role tokens would be a pretty fun way to win. She actually seems like a great splash in the W/B enchantments deck since they have so many cards that care about enchantments dying. 2:25:50 I know this doesn't make the card meaningfully better, but there's actually a couple different infinite mana combos with Agatha's Souls cauldron that are possible (though extremely unlikely) in limited environments. Though there would certainly be matchups where it gets a lot better due to being decent graveyard hate. 2:39:19 I think rest in peace can definitely do some work if you're a bargain centric deck, and you go up against the white black enchantments deck, though that would put in the narrow group of cards that both require synergy with your gameplan and the right opponent to be good. 2:51:24 If you have two or more Stockpiling celebrants and at least 4 of the following creatures (Bramble Familiar; Rootrider Faun; Ruby, daring tracker) you can generate infinite ETBs and scry 2 triggers, which lets you stack your deck in any order you like by itself, or can just kill the opponent if you also have an Unruly catapult. The combo is definitely on the magical Christmas land side of things, but at least most of the relevant cards are decent by themselves.
for virtue of courage: i played it in a red/blue deck with 3 of the catapults, was fine to have a 2 mana shock in the deck that also dealt 1-2 damage to the opponent, and when i ever ran out of stuff to do my catapults suddenly were draw engines.
i've had a few really great gruul season of growth decks, theres just so many good cards that target with all the adventure creatures and role cards, and youre not really having to play bad cards to make it work
Something I really like with the Huntsman's Redemption is that it's flexible enough to let you go grab a land in the second chapter too. If you have a 4-drop in-hand and played this on 3, it can unscrew you for mana and let you get that 4-drop played in time for that mean final chapter. I'm curious to see if it would see play in big-stompy green EDH decks or other constructed formats. Tutoring is pretty much always relevant and nobody's going to frown on +2/+2 with trample for their creatures. The only downside I can see is that in constructed formats you have other ways to get that trample all the time, and everyone gets to see the third chapter coming. I still think it's pretty decent at 3 mana as the floor is just a vanilla creature and to prevent the upsides on later turns will cost opponents something.
one question cant sentinel of lost lores even return a casualy exiled monster that has an adventure back to hand it does not seem to specify that the card has to be on an adventure which would make it a lot better since this set has quite some exile removal
Another sweet thing you can do is put a copy of a role on the same creature to basically just pay 2 to scry 2 and you can do it as many times as you want. Really nice if things stall out, can see like 4 or more cards every turn if you need to.
Moonshaker is insane. It killed me in draft twice yesterday... I played UR Spells and only had single target removal.. in Boros Tokens Moonshaker is nye unbeatable.
Necro seemed busted to me when I had it in a draft in a deck only running either 9 or 10 (I can't remember exactly) black sources, since you don't really want to play it out until you're basically empty-handed anyways. Especially if you have a decent amount of bargaining and some life to work with, most times I cast it it was basically 3 mana, pay 9 life, draw 9 cards, and get a bargain upside the following turn, which, unless your opponent has been pressuring your life total, is basically unbeatable.
Want to share my experience with Feral Encounter: my deck (G/B) happened to also include the 2/3 witch with a 1 mana adventure (makes a Wicked role). You can cast the adventure half off this. So it's worth remembering that, depending on how many of your big creatures have a cheap adventure, you can end up with more hits even if you only have 4-5 mana. (also, if you have six mana and hit the 3/1 flash "kill someone who took damage this turn" Faerie, it can kill big creatures. Really strong, really good at getting a 2:1)
I managed to get passed two of these in a deck where i p1p1 defense of the heart where i went RG and splashed goose mother. Went 7-0. Feral encounter was really good and what that type of deck wants, but yea, the adventures are good with it too. Its pretty rare that its a totally dead card.
hardened scales does have some synergy in this set I had a sealed deck with greta and the goose mother and you can always just bargin it away as a 1 mana spell i dont think its a F, but you do need very specific cards
Land Tax is pretty strong. You should probably activate it and take all three even if you have to discard two of them. After a few activations, you just never draw lands again.
Didn't get mentioned in the review, but ashiok plays VERY nicely with creatures going on adventure. Ashiok -2 into next turn ashiok -2 play an adventure is 4 2/2s for very little work
All of the off-color adventures seem to be very good cards, and they'll tend to go later as a result of being viewed as gold cards. Being able to jam a bunch of them into your deck, especially if you're getting them late, sounds like a good way to take advantage of all the great fixing the format has.
It’s interesting that all the multicolored Adventure spells seem to work well with the creature they’re on. Like you want them in multiples, probably in Constructed
Is there a reason that The Irencrag isn't just a dual-faced card that transforms? I get that it would be the only one in the set or whatever, but that would have solved the template mangling they did to that thing.
Having only one double faced card in the set would be a bit of an issue for draft and sealed in paper. They would probably have to add an entire proxy card just for the irencrag if they did that as opposed to one proxy card sitting in for several transform cards in sets where there are many. I imagine it also just wouldn't justify the extra printing cost just for the irencrag cause I'm pretty sure double faced cards have an entire separate printing sheet which would also be a nightmare for pack collation. Edit: The printing thing is probably the main issue and the more I think about it the more complicated I feel like pack collation would be with a single double faced card in the set.
@@joshhudson9839 That's actually a pretty plausible reason -- it's just always a shame when otherwise decent / functional cards get completely butchered in templating when "we have the technology" to address the issue.
Also, surprised to see Luis discuss Rankle's Prank without saying the words "Barter in Blood" because I have no idea what it was worth in Odyssey Limited (I was trash at draft twenty years ago) but the Prank is strictly better than an old Uncommon so that should be something?
Important to note, Expensive Taste doesn't fix your mana for the spells you exile, so if your opponent is playing different colours than you it's often gonna be a blank.
format feels pretty bomb heavy, especially the white +1/+1 token enchantment (3 times) and the one sided wrath (once) made me insta-concede games upon resolve. luckily i havent seen that green triplet bomb yet -.-
i never had it but i played vs rankles prank 3times and 3 times it killes my two really good last creatures and either neither or a bad one from them ... also twice i discard 2 good cards and once they had 1 land and once they had 2 lands in hand .... so far this card killed me 3 cards singlehandled when i think i would have won the games every single time if they not played exactly this card
I have Rhystic Study as more like a B-. If they choose not to pay it you draw a card. A cheap blue black faerie deck I think this would be great in drawing you more disruption. Taxing their mana seems good to.
F for Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, and Fiery Emancipation were my only disagreements. There's just a lot of ways those cards can go off the upside is so strong.
It's ability is typically associated with Green, and since Blue can just make creatures unblockable, it's essentially an ability that you would find on a UG hybrid card. Prodigy wants to start big and get small, while the otter wants to do the opposite.
Just wanted to correct you on "Likeness Looter", you guys said it looses flying when it becomes a copy of a creature in the grave yard, that is not true, the card says it becomes a copy of that creature except it also has flying and the ability to become a copy of a a creature in the grave yard. So you could just make it bigger and still have flying. Great thoughts on the rare and mythic rare.
Is that a rat-tail, human? Rejoice, for the right to serve me is now thine. Since thou art human still, permit me ask. Wilt thy human soul surrender and pledge thyself to me? Swearest thou by the sweet-tempered sludge that laps at our bosoms?
Not even rares can mention Equipment without Marshall getting upset? Does everything have to be exactly on theme with no deviation? Didn't have the same complaints about self-mill in a set without Graveyard themes.
I think you guys are underestimating lich king’s conquest. All you have to do is aggressively trade in combat and have a few food or rats hanging around for it to be a bomb. I’ve had it twice and won the game on the spot every time I cast it.
i got absolutely destroyed by Rankles Prank in a low to the ground Rat deck. all 3 modes were good for the opponent they had emptied their hand and had a bunch of rats. i was slower and had 2 creatures holding of their rat army and a couple of cards in hand. than they 4 for 1 (and 2 of their rats) me and i lost 4 life. in the right deck that card is definitely better than a C

one question cant sentinel of lost lores even return a casualy exiled monster that has an adventure back to hand it does not seem to specify that the card has to be on an adventure which would make it a lot better since this set has quite some exile removal
It can.
Yenna + Cooped up is very good!
Another sweet thing you can do is put a copy of a role on the same creature to basically just pay 2 to scry 2 and you can do it as many times as you want. Really nice if things stall out, can see like 4 or more cards every turn if you need to.
Great review. Thank you
Moonshaker is insane. It killed me in draft twice yesterday... I played UR Spells and only had single target removal.. in Boros Tokens Moonshaker is nye unbeatable.
Best MTG content out there, love you guys! ❤
Really nice format and good information.
You guys didn’t talk about the combo with collectors vault and food fight. All artifacts get the 2 sac deal 2. Including treasures. Not just foods.
"Enchant Forest" on Utopia Sprawl is relevant in that it gets knocked off by Spreading Seas.
The enchantment bonus sheet cards all have A+ flavor text.
Is there a reason that The Irencrag isn't just a dual-faced card that transforms? I get that it would be the only one in the set or whatever, but that would have solved the template mangling they did to that thing.
Yeah it's weird. They could also have it create a token, like Icingdeath does
Having only one double faced card in the set would be a bit of an issue for draft and sealed in paper.
@@joshhudson9839 That's actually a pretty plausible reason -- it's just always a shame when otherwise decent / functional cards get completely butchered in templating when "we have the technology" to address the issue.
it's the same reason random DFCs have been historically difficult to reprint in sets that don't have a ton of them.@@Tommyhillpicker
Curiosity is also good on the Unruly Catapult in UR spells!
Likeness looter wouldn't lose flying, it's right there on the card
I just realized curiosity just says damage and not combat damage. That with the pinger seems insane in UR
format feels pretty bomb heavy, especially the white +1/+1 token enchantment (3 times) and the one sided wrath (once) made me insta-concede games upon resolve. luckily i havent seen that green triplet bomb yet -.-
Like the different layout. I know it might be because Squirrel is running things this episode
i never had it but i played vs rankles prank 3times and 3 times it killes my two really good last creatures and either neither or a bad one from them ... also twice i discard 2 good cards and once they had 1 land and once they had 2 lands in hand .... so far this card killed me 3 cards singlehandled when i think i would have won the games every single time if they not played exactly this card
Yeah, saw it used against numot a couple of times and it won his opponents the game every time from being behind or at parity
I have Rhystic Study as more like a B-. If they choose not to pay it you draw a card. A cheap blue black faerie deck I think this would be great in drawing you more disruption. Taxing their mana seems good to.
Great show!
Just a reminder you can't use non token creatures to bargain.
Except artifact creatures.
unless it's an enchantment or artifact creature (like the mana fixing scarecrow)
With Gumdrop Poisoner it gets a bit silly with the Raise Dead effects in the set, especially Back for Seconds, I'd say it's an A
Great video as always
Does blind obedience count as you tapping creatures for something like Sharae or Hylda or does entering play that way not count as getting tapped?
no it does not, the cards do not get tapped, they enter already tapped
No it's never untapped
I don't thing it really changes the grade all that much but you are more than 90% to hit a land on that turtle. In most spots it's closer to 95%
Curiosity on a catapult is a beating.
F for Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, and Fiery Emancipation were my only disagreements. There's just a lot of ways those cards can go off the upside is so strong.
I’m surprised Luis didn’t call Redcap Gutter-Dweller Grave Titan. It’s totally Grave Titan
It's more like Siege-gang Commander crossed with Dark-Dweller Oracle.
I got blown out by asnie antics in the prerelease
Why doesn't elusive otter just have skulk? They put the ability on the prodigy and both lines of text function identically.
Elusive Otter has the opposite ability--can't be chump blocked by smaller creatures, not Skulk (can't be blocked by bigger creatures).
It's ability is typically associated with Green, and since Blue can just make creatures unblockable, it's essentially an ability that you would find on a UG hybrid card. Prodigy wants to start big and get small, while the otter wants to do the opposite.
ok thanks. i kept reading both and not realizing it. they should keyword the otter ability so its clear to idiots like me@@fizishy
Bramble Familiar can block and bounce too
Tough set for me to get a good read. I eventually figured out LOTR but this one is nuts and full of removal.
So many As at rare sounds like a prince format
I want to love Lich-Knight's Conquest, but not getting stuff from any graveyard is backbreaking 😢
I think apprentice's folly is not unplayable in a deck without much bargain.
Of course it's much better with the creatures and the bargain.
2:02:46 reading challenge failed :D
gruff triplets+3 blind mice!
6 mana creature that puts 2 tokens on the board and no mention of Grave Titan from LSV???
Filtering out ur deck with a card like land tax can make the difference in control builds
Looter changeling fairy flies no matter what she looks like! Other than that i grade this show A+
I think you guys are underestimating lich king’s conquest. All you have to do is aggressively trade in combat and have a few food or rats hanging around for it to be a bomb. I’ve had it twice and won the game on the spot every time I cast it.
It's situational. You need to have a decent board presence for this to be any good. Threes just too much removal for this to be good on its own.
i got absolutely destroyed by Rankles Prank in a low to the ground Rat deck. all 3 modes were good for the opponent they had emptied their hand and had a bunch of rats. i was slower and had 2 creatures holding of their rat army and a couple of cards in hand. than they 4 for 1 (and 2 of their rats) me and i lost 4 life. in the right deck that card is definitely better than a C
Gruff Triplets is even better than it looks. Wait til you bargain one of the tokens in combat to make the other two turn into 6/6’s.
good lord
Some of the non-combat damage stuff at least triggers off Kellan's Lightblades. Still not great.
oh no :( as i dont follow social media i didnt know he died
i didnt even know sheldon had cancer :( so sad he seemed like such a nice guy
Beseech the mirror is certainly not an F
There is only 1 planeswalker per set going forward FWIW
