  • I think Daytona's panoramic attract mode demo is pretty well-known, but I actually haven't seen a direct capture of the "Special" version of it on UA-cam yet; I've only seen offscreen handcam recordings. So, here it is, recorded from the Model 2 emulator. You'll notice that it looks similar to the more common Twin cabinet demo that has already been posted to UA-cam several times, except that this version has smaller gaps between the screens. This is because the Special Edition release of the game was intended for deluxe-sized cabinets with thinner bezels, placed adjacent to each other. This leaves proportionally much less space between screens than the smaller twin cabinets do.
There are four known revisions of Daytona USA:
Version 1 (1993 copyright) - Released in very small numbers and probably meant for test markets. This version of the game has no multiplayer/link functionality, is limited to Normal length races only, and shipped for Deluxe sit-down cabinets as well as small Upright cabinets. Its HUD, attract mode, and rolling start demo differ greatly from each of the revisions that followed. Even the gameplay is a little different; the AI cars are far more likely to spin out and crash, making them much more dangerous to the player.
Version 2 (1994 copyright) - The most common version of the game, which was made for the new Twin cabinet model but could also be installed into the existing cabinet styles. This version added multiplayer functionality (plus the panoramic attract mode to accompany it), Grandprix & Endurance length races, slightly revised AI, a new HUD, new demo views, and 4 more secret name entry jingles. A button code can be entered to disable the handicap speed boost in multiplayer; in Grandprix & Endurance modes, this same code also causes tires to wear out over time, which actually necessitates the use of pit road.
Version 3 (Special Edition) - This version was designed for linked, deluxe-sized cabinets with a special control module to be operated by an attendant. The attendant could use these controls to either remotely start the game, force certain menu selections (like dictating which courses, car types, or other game options are used), or to allow unlimited time for the players to make their selections themselves. When the cabinet type in the operator menu is set to "Special," the panoramic attract demo is adjusted accordingly, as in this video.
Version 4 (Saturn Ads) - This version adds a short advertisement after the attract mode for the Sega Saturn version of Daytona USA, which can be toggled on or off in the operator menu. (This video was recorded from this version of the game, with the ad turned off.)
    Played on ElSemi's Model 2 emulator v1.1a.

There's a kind of passion you could tell the AM2 team had when making this that seems a bit lost in the sequels.. The attract mode spanning across 8 screens with accurate bezel correction is an example of that

It wasn't until about a year ago that I even realized that there were two separate panoramic demos to compensate for the different bezel sizes between the twin and deluxe size cabinets.

Personally, I think Daytona USA 2 surpassed the original Daytona USA with the improved graphics and tracks/car selections

@@KeijiMuto-cx5gp Yes but I don’t think it had the 8-screen attract sequence and many prefer the more poppy chip tune soundtrack of the first game. Mitsuyoshi was in his element crafting incredible chip music and pushing that medium to its limits.

@@jaymum23 Daytona 2 has a 16-player link mode, and if I had to guess I'd say that they probably didn't want to go to the trouble of arranging an attract demo that looked good on that many monitors plus any lesser combinations of monitors.
Daytona 2 also brought back the spectator mode from Virtua Racing, complete with a ton of absolutely goofy commentary that 99% of players have probably never heard. The AM2/AV sense of humor is definitely still there. I posted a whole longplay video of it on this channel not too long ago that showed off most of it.

@@jaymum23 It ain't chiptune. It's tracker music with CD-DA quality samples. Yes, it's not pre-rendered audio, like on the Saturn version, and it's not live generated, like S/NES. It is simultaniously limiting and giving many possibilities, and that's why I like it.

I love the attract mode editing where the full video gets split into 2, then into 4 and then it merges again into one view, seamlessly. Really outstanding

I love that the 8 player attract features the pace car, that’s something you don’t see in the gameplay.

0:11 This is the only time the full-size pace car is seen in game! The mini version is on the waiting to link screen.

0:48 Missed opportunity to have 7 screens have a part of "Daytona" And The 8th have the word "USA" like:
    [D][A][Y][T][O][N][A] [USA]

It's amazing how you captured that (and your video description is very interesting)! Thanks very much for sharing! It's something that I thought would be lost to arcade lore. Really cool stuff!

대한민국에서 8 PLAYER 연결은 없었고, 최대 6 PLAYER 연결이 1군데 있었는데... 이렇게 선명하게 보는 날이 오네요
    정말 귀한 영상을 만들어주셔서 감사합니다.

Interesting that the title bouncing into the screen is not perfectly synchronized on all the screens. I wonder if that was on purpose? It looks cool.

Noice! If I try this the 7&8 emulators start lagging pretty badly. Interesting write up in the description, I didn't know there was a difference with the special version.

It happens whenever the machines go slightly out of sync. Can happen on real hardware, too. I've seen it before.
