For me, the flip up/out/down screen is extremely useful for three situations: 1) Low close up shots of (for example) plants/fungi and really anything that would require a close to the ground POV that would otherwise require the photographer to prostrate themselves belly down ...in public! 2) "Shooting from the hip" with the screen flipped out facing up for less intrusive street photography ...and 3) Photography when in a crowd, especially if you are short like I am. The XT-30 is the better camera in every way and is still very small - unless you're blogging/taking selfies and require a front facing screen. If you want the smallest possible then go for a fixed 23mm f2 lens option with the X-100 V (which is weather-sealed) and pay a lot more. On paper the X-E4 looks smaller, but when you start adding lenses and a grip then the overall size of the camera gets so much bigger anyway, so you might as well go for the better XT-30 IMO. The clean, flat front certainly looks amazing but I do think it's a bit of a shame they removed the S/C/M switch. Still, a tilt screen is one of the few things I miss on my X-E3. Also those wide strap lugs look niice, and the angular corners remind me a bit of old Canon screwmount rangefinders, or the Nikon F. Fuji really outdid themselves, they keep making more and more beautiful cameras.
ha ha, I watch Kai's video when I want to smile. I watch yours to get your perspective on Fujifilm as a fellow GR shooter :-) Congrats on the Moment collab, that's great.
@@SamuelStreetlife Compliments & feedbacks are always sensitive subject both for the sender and the receiver. I've realised, it didn't reflect my thinking. Sorry about that. Now it's reflecting my truth.
Pretty sure the reason why if you hold the camera close to something the screen auto inverts is because their evf eye sensor is how the camera knows you're in selfie flip screen mode.
You had the same complaint - lack of dedicated button to switch between LCD, EVF, etc - with the X100V as well. I agree, I wish there was a dedicated button like on the XH1. But, alternatively, you can assign a custom button to this function. On my X100V I have assigned the little custom button next to the shutter to the display mode switch function. FYI!
"you can watch kai's video now" HA! Shots fired! From what I am aware of, you have to pay for both grips - I really don't want to pay £140 in total so I can hold my camera better. It's justifiable with my XH1 as I get more power and vertical functionality but this? feels like fuji they are treating ergonomics as a commodity.... then again I can't talk; also own an M6! I think I'm just going to stick with X Trans III Bodies for now and side-grade my XE2 to the XE3 or better yet, X-Pro 2?!
Yeah I feel you. I thought it comes with all X-E4's... But I have now removed the grip and I would say you really only need the thumbrest to make it more comfortable. Feels like a digital leica M with the thumbrest but a little grippier. X-Pro2 or XH1 are so much bigger than the X-E4 I wouldn't compare them. Flip screen and newer sensor would lean me towards the X-E4 (also same AF system as XT4) if I would want a second camera.
@@SamuelStreetlife Maybe but with the thumb rest impossible to use the Q button with eye in the evf no? Feedback possible of the strange place pf the joystick ? So perfect with X-E3
Which camera is the better choice Fuji xe4 or Ricoh gr iii x. I don't do videos and not interested in changing out different lens. I got $1,200 to spend and all I do is bacis for fun shooting.. Or should I look at something different in that small compact size.. Thank you Greg
Hi Samuel, thx for your introduction. It’s great! I have a question of this 27mm lens which hope you can help…does this lens need to add UV since it is already WR?
Thank you Samuel for that great review. I was briefly contemplating selling my X100F and X-T2 and getting this one instead. Until I watched your video. I was still rather convinced until you hinted on the missing manual focus switch. Thank you for bringing this up! That officially kills it for me. I'm using it all the time. Would have been easy for Fuji to keep it just as it was on the X-E3 and on basically all other major cameras. I guess it got sacrificed for a sleek design just like even the little "grip bump" which means you always have to use the accessory making it a bit more bulky at the bottom. Two rather sad decisions on an otherwise amazing camera. Kind of bums me out cause I was looking forward to this.
I totally understand you. It is very frustrating that they removed the AF switch. I am hoping they will add a custom feature to switch between AF and M through the FN buttons. That would help alot.
I'm looking into buying a camera for street photography and I'm torn between Fujifilm X-E4 and the Ricoh GR III. How is the X-E4 compared to the Ricoh GR III? Which JPEGs do you prefer more, the X-E4 (Fujifilm) or the Ricoh GR III? Also being both a Fujifilm and Ricoh camera user, which has given you less technical problems? I've heard of Ricoh's dust problem and sticky lens which has made me nervous about the system but from what I've seen the images are beautiful If you could give me your perspective, I'd really appreciate it :) Thank you
Depends who you ask :) For me personally, I only use IBIS from the features you mentioned. And if I would want only one camera that can do it all then yes, IBIS would be almost a requirement. BUT I have cameras that don't have IBIS and I love using them just as much. People didn't have any stabilization back in the film days. So there is no excuse to make great images without IBIS :) But once you had it, it is hard to not have it...
Why haven't Fujifilm got the message yet that their customers want a thumbrest on their cameras? Buying a separate thumbs-up and losing your hotshoe is just a pain. Failing that, they could install a separate attachment point for an optional thumbrest. This doesn't have to be a hotshoe.
Agreed. The camera looks almost unusable without the thumb grip. The pen f has a flat front, too, but the thumb catch is really good. By making the hot shoe thumb grip essential, Fuji made flash photography with this camera impossible. That and Fuji accessories are stupidly overpriced so they just added 100 to 200 bucks to the price of the camera.
exactly. they also got rid of the mcs selector on the front along with the rear dial. i absolutely love my xe3 and was really hoping the xe4 would just add a flip screen with an updated sensor (weather sealing would have been nice) and instead they killed this on functionality and ergonomics. i'm weirdly way more pissed about this than i should be because it's just a camera, but i really had my hopes up. i use that mcs switch constantly, have zero interest in fumbling with the menu to change it, and there aren't enough assignable buttons to map it.
@@aj-wn4ps wouldn't those people go for an xa or xf line though? or a ricoh gr or similar? and i could see that re: ergonomics if those were the only changes. with the removal of the mcs selector and back dial it feels like these decisions were made by people in the company who don't use the cameras and are just trying to further distance the xe series from the xpro series by comparing features on a spreadsheet. instead of making the xpro better they decrease functionality of the xe.
@@aj-wn4ps a small thumb catch wouldn't have added much of anything to the size. As for the front grip, any lens is going to stick out farther than the grip anyway. The lack of front grip was mostly an aesthetic choice--which is fine, it looks good. But there is no excuse for the lack of a rear thumb catch. Again, look at the pen f. Olympus did the flat front rangefinder thing several years ago. They made up for it with a very good thumb catch that is slightly recessed into the body to not impact the overall thickness. I think Fuji did this to sell their massively overpriced accessories.

Hi again Samuel, I'm definitely thinking of getting this camera. That problem you had with the image flipping?!?! on the LCD screen? was that resolved in the end, or is it something it just does?!?! Samuel? and would you say the XE4 body has a fairly robust build to it Samuel?.....Sorry for all the silly questions but thank you again for your help Samuel.
I have an older Fujifilm that does not have Eterna. For skintones, if I can't use Eterna, which other film simulation do you think has the best skin tones for video?
Funny you ask because I cut out a section where I talked about just that. I cut it out because I changed my mind. First I found the buttons to be cheap and hollow feeling (and the menu and display button feel hollow! They are also super flush to the body which makes them hard to press) but I think I was a little too harsh because I got used to my Leica M 262 and of course the X-E4 feels cheap then! But compared to the X100V I would say it feels pretty much the same. Maybe sliiiightly cheaper feeling with the battery opening and the two buttons on the back.
Fantastic decision by Fujifilm to send you the camera for testing. Really great review. I've been shooting with an X-E3 for years and the only reason to switch to an X-E4 would have been the IBIS, which isn't there. I would recommend the X-S10 to anyone. 1/10 shutter speed at 35mm(50mm eq.) just can't be beat. You don't even have to buy a grip to hold the camera properly 😄
...that camera is for me... ha ha... been thinking of updating my Fuji X30... but really with all the lockdowns... it would gather dust... so will make this my personal goal-gift after the world gets to the point we can go outside without worry...
Thanks for the review 2 question, when you use the X-E4 in hand for vlog example with 18-55 when your walk, what settings for Eterna? Just Eterna or is it possible to know your sharpess, color, -2, -1, etc, ..? Post prod of your Eterna in software or simply it's the out of camera? Second : place of Q and joystick are really bad no? Thanks
I can tell you my settings for video with the X-E4: Eterna, H-2, S-1, Color +2, Sharpness -2, High ISO NR -4. I correct contrast and color in post in premiere pro. Mosty I just play with the tone curve and white balance. If you use the joystick a lot to change the focus point then yes, it is not the ideal position. Not bad but a little uncomfortbale to use. But I only use the middle AF point so I don't have a problem with it. For navigating the menu it is fine. Q button is in a weird position but easy to use.
Hey @SamuelLStreetlife, thank you fot the video. As I see this camera has another changes than the previous Fuji cameras. The eyelet on the camera is different, and the microphone connector is finally 3,5mm. Can you measure the dimension of the hole in the new eyelet? I'm wondering what kind of self made camera strap can fit in.
This is an awesome review ! I’d love to pick your brain on the following… I’m having a hard time with deciding on a new Fuji body, struggling with GAS, but also feeling like I want a new and/or third body. Right now I’m shooting on an XT3 and an X100V. Love both. I shoot studio portraits and headshots, personal branding photos and the occasional family session. I used to shoot engagements and weddings, but now it’s almost entirely portrait work. I have fallen in love with the rangefinder style of the X100V, and I am eyeing the XPRO 3 and XE4. I’m having a hard time deciding if I should sell my XT3, and get an XPRO 3, keep the XT3 and get an XE4, or just wait and save for the XPRO3 and have three cameras (XT3, XPRO & X100). I’ve also considered the XT4, but I don’t do video, don’t care about IBIS and I just don’t see the upgrade. I like to work very minimalist, and I only have a handful of lenses. I would love your thoughts as to what you would do in my shoes. I think I’m also feeling kind of burnt out and bored and there’s something about the x100 that just makes me want to shoot more, which is why I’m leaning towards the rangefinder minimalism found in the XE4 and XPRO series. I want the camera to get out of my way, and my work is about connection, simplicity and closeness. Even in the studio, I keep one eye open. I am finding myself shooting in studio with the X100! Would you sell the XT3 and get the XPRO, keep it and go XE4, or just wait and save and get the XPRO as a third? I think there is some piece of me that’s just scared of going entirely rangefinder, considering I’m doing studio for portraits… But maybe that’s just a simple learning curve. And if I sell my XT3 I could probably afford to get another lens, although I’m pretty happy with my combination of 23, 35 and 56. If the focus on the XE4 is as good as the XT3, or better, I’m in. Is it really that fast? Is the XE4 comparable to XT3 in terms of IQ, ability to work with strobes and speed?
Question sir, about the white balance shift? can it be saved on the Q menu like the XPRO3? i really love the FILM SIMULATION recipes but on my X-T2 there is no white balance can be saved on the Q menu, i must shift it manually.
Ha. I watched Kai's video just before yours so there you go 😉. Always enjoy your vids. Something you said triggered a flow of thought (also I'm not taking a swipe at anyone nor trying to start a debate - disclaimer over)... I find it funny how we (humans) often need to categorise (primarily for marketing/promotion) things but give those things unapt nomenclature. Some photographers you've interviewed in the past have discussed this too. (It's like many music genres which were invented by the record industry to better market music sales. Steam punk is one which isn't punk but references cyberpunk which is a subcategory of punk, but steampunk still retains punk in the name). Street photography needing people to be a photograph of the street. I understand the genre/style is meant to be a candid document of the human element of the ✌️street✌️ but why call it "street" when it is about the human element and is the artificial street not human element enough? I think people get hung up on it and I don't think it's a problem to document evidence of human presence but absent of actual humans, even if the manmade environment is the evidence (the street) and call it street photography... and keeping in line with popular definition of "street ", and if needing to distinguish it from urban landscape or architectural where the focus could be popularly defined to represent the urban environment itself or architecture as the name suggests, I don't see why documenting/capturing the same environment where the focus is to draw attention the absence of people in a normally bustling environment would also constitute as Street despite not quite fitting the popular purist definition. I guess that was a long-winded way of saying I think it's fine for you (anyone) to take a photo of the street documenting the absence of people or even plain urban environment and still call it Street - COVID/post apocalyptic Street. Maybe we should be calling it something that alludes to the human element if it is a requirement for the style - but I guess urban social documentary photography doesn't market as well. Ok stream of consciousness over.

@@SamuelStreetlife Tried the S10 in store today and again the screen had a yellow tint. Complete joke. Unless UK stock are getting a different run of devices and have screen issues or Fuji have added this stupid warming effect to their evf/lcds going forward. I dont know why they did it smaller then X-E2 starting from X-E3 ... I think X-E2 was perfect size!! still having and enjoying it!
Hehe appreciate it Take! :)
Yes a street photography settings video please!
The ending got me! Kay's was great and so do yours. You're both complementary!
Aw too nice my friend! But I appreciate it :) Definitely concidering doing a settings video now.
Just checked out Ron Haviv...no excuses indeed! Thanks for the rec.
FYI!
I must have missed that! That would be awesome. Thanks for the tip!
What would you use for food photography and close portraits? Will the pancake 27 cut it?
"you can watch kai's video now"
HA!

It's like he's clairvoyant. That was exactly what I intended to do. 😂
Great help - thank you! I’ve decided against buying this upgrade to my E3. I have the H1 and T3. I’ll just get the 27mm lens.
No weather sealing, I might have considered a Fuji for this little guy.
Great review! As always very informative!
I assume image stabilization and weather sealing are reserved for their more premium cameras... like the xpro/xt series.
Great video! Thanks for sharing it!
Which camera is the better choice Fuji xe4 or Ricoh gr iii x. I don't do videos and not interested in changing out different lens.
I got $1,200 to spend and all I do is bacis for fun shooting..
Or should I look at something different in that small compact size..
Thank you
Greg
Nice video, what do you prefer, black or silver colour in XE4?
Hi Samuel, thx for your introduction. It’s great! I have a question of this 27mm lens which hope you can help…does this lens need to add UV since it is already WR?
Wow thank you for doing the vlog test so early! I was shocked when the Samyang lens actually looked useable !
I choked on my soda from laughing when Kai popped up at the end 😂
Haha.
SPOILER ALERT
This is a great kit! I am about to update my X100T to a X100V, but this really has me reconsidering.
Keep the T. The sensor and look is so timeless. I love it more than my V. The V is awesome in so many ways... but I’d keep the T, as well.😊
Thank you Samuel for that great review.
I've heard of Ricoh's dust problem and sticky lens which has made me nervous about the system but from what I've seen the images are beautiful
If you could give me your perspective, I'd really appreciate it :) Thank you
Do you think don’t have ibis and leaf shutter for hss flash shooting are deal breakers?
Depends who you ask :) For me personally, I only use IBIS from the features you mentioned. And if I would want only one camera that can do it all then yes, IBIS would be almost a requirement. BUT I have cameras that don't have IBIS and I love using them just as much. People didn't have any stabilization back in the film days. So there is no excuse to make great images without IBIS :) But once you had it, it is hard to not have it...
Excellent video. Does placing a V filter before the lens hood affect the focus motor on this 27mm lens?
Nice review. Fun. Simple quick. 👍🏻
You gotta love this camera. Nice Review man!!!!
Thank you! It's not for everyone. But I like it
Why haven't Fujifilm got the message yet that their customers want a thumbrest on their cameras?
To be fair I think some people want it as small as possible?
The matte black XE-4 with the new 27mm pancake 🔥
Yes!
Thanks I really enjoyed this. I'd choose the XE4 all day long over the ZV1 provided the pre amps are not too hissy?
Nicely done-informative and enjoyable as always
What is the bridge where you are standing around the 7:00~ I feel like I’ve seen that bridge in my dreams lol, but nice review. I’m considering this camera. Seems very stable in the test you did, love it! Thank you
Great review! I will consider buying the X-E4!! Thank you.

Great video Samuel. I'm curious, how is the battery life for video?
It's not great. One battery may last you an hour when recording in 4K. But I haven't tested it. It feels a little worse than my XH1.

Great video as always and great images.
Hi Samuel, i am in doubt if buying x-s10 or x-e4. I like the isbs in x-s10 while I like the portability of x-e4. I want to buy the camera to shoot photos and videos to my family, i am not a pro. I am not sure how much critical will be shoot without isbs. Please could you be so kind to give me your kind opinion? Thanks
Really agree with what you said at about 10:30 ... Visual notes.
I have an older Fujifilm that does not have Eterna. For skintones, if I can't use Eterna, which other film simulation do you think has the best skin tones for video?
What's the build quality like Samuel? Is it anywhere near the X100v or is it plasticity and hollow?
Funny you ask because I cut out a section where I talked about just that. I cut it out because I changed my mind. First I found the buttons to be cheap and hollow feeling (and the menu and display button feel hollow! They are also super flush to the body which makes them hard to press) but I think I was a little too harsh because I got used to my Leica M 262 and of course the X-E4 feels cheap then! But compared to the X100V I would say it feels pretty much the same. Maybe sliiiightly cheaper feeling with the battery opening and the two buttons on the back.
So it's unfortunate that there is no IBIS, but I'm guessing you can do that in post with google photos and it should work just fine, right?
Very cool review! Nice format 👌🏻!
Thanks Christian! I gave it my best :)
❤ to learn photography and about camera. Thanks!
Welche Filmsimulation hast du verwendet um das Video zu drehen? Liebe Grüße und vielen Dank vorab für deine Antwort 👍🏻
Thanks for the review
2 question, when you use the X-E4 in hand for vlog example with 18-55 when your walk, what settings for Eterna?
@@SamuelStreetlife a BIG thanks 🙏
Your Eterna is really very beautiful.
I dont have a measure band at the moment but it looks to me like 8-10mm!
Great video! Still think I am getting the x100v, since I have the xpro2 for changing lenses. I think this will compete with the x100v though.
This is an awesome review !
I’d love to pick your brain on the following…
I’m having a hard time with deciding on a new Fuji body, struggling with GAS, but also feeling like I want a new and/or third body.
You can use some sort of bracket to put the microphone to the side. Sony A6600 users have been doing this for a while.
Yes!
love your videos! keep it up!
Thank you Joel!!
There is a button nxt to eyepiece to switch between evf live view or a combination of them all at least on the x e3

Cool gemacht. Danke 👍🏼
Question sir, about the white balance shift? can it be saved on the Q menu like the XPRO3? i really love the FILM SIMULATION recipes but on my X-T2 there is no white balance can be saved on the Q menu, i must shift it manually.
Yes you can do that! :)
The only reason I think they'd exclude weather sealing is to protect the X100V which is pissing me off
Weather sealing adds to the cost.
Nice and first video without typically German accent. Nice. 👍
Given how challenging it has become to find an x100v, this might be the DIY x100v in the supply chain shortage era.

Many of their bodies have this new warm lcd tint which is horrible.
I know what you mean. But I haven't experienced that on the X-E4. I had to adjust my X-H1 screen but the X-E4 seems fine.
@@SamuelStreetlife Thanks Samuel for the reply. At least I’m not alone. This could be promising
@@SamuelStreetlife Tried the S10 in store today and again the screen had a yellow tint. Complete joke. Unless UK stock are getting a different run of devices and have screen issues or Fuji have added this stupid warming effect to their evf/lcds going forward.
They might as well have a sticker on the camera that says “What you see in camera ain’t going to be the same as your calibrated monitor or our older calibrated devices”
They didn’t have a display model X-E4 to test but I’m sure it’ll be the same. Hopefully I be able to travel outside the country to Europe this summer and I’ll try another batch somewhere to see if any difference
I literally put my x-T30 beside the x-s10 and called the assistant over and showed them.. even they said yeah they can see the tint.
Bro I love my X-e3
It's a great cam!
I dont know why they did it smaller then X-E2 starting from X-E3 ... I think X-E2 was perfect size!! still having and enjoying it! And I see that mII version of 27mm is still having this "breathing" focus construction... didnt like it much with their first version and sold the lens and kept 18mm instead - way more comfortable to use to my test. I think as GR user you will like it too!! Its just a tiny bigger then 27mm but works faster and quieter even on my old X-E2 and with newer bodies it will be a beast! )))
Does it give clean HDMI output and audio level indicator on the screen, please 🙏❔️
