  • I wanted to test out the Spool Hi-Speed bearings I recently picked and compare them to a brand new out of the box reel. I am hopeful that by watching this video you will be able to make a more informed decision when looking at purchasing aftermarket bearings for your reels.

    I've been thinking of upgrading some bearings in some of my 15+ year old Curado reels. I was not expecting there to be any difference in aftermarket bearings though. I just figured that my since I use my reels in saltwater that they could benefit from new bearings.
    The first time you said "y'all" I subscribed. There's an automatic +5 on ability and fishing knowledge for anyone that says that.

    I have 4 sets of spool hispeed. I put some in my American hero and it didn't seem to do right but I could out the less oil you put in it the better. You are only suppose to put 1/4 a drop of oil in them, if you have more then that they don't work right. Now my shimano citica it improved the cast distance almost by double.

    I'm about to upgrade my 3 yr old black max with high speeds new xcr bearings. They are supposed to be even better by a lot. So hopefully I can get way further cast.... apparently their are specific type oils you need to use on their ceramic bearings. We shall see

    Thanks for the insight, science wins as ceramic ball bearings have less mass than steel balls. According to Newton as the mass of an object is increased, the acceleration of the object is decreased. A close to perfect experiment considering the variables as they are for a fishing UA-camr. Well done sir.

    • @brasshnkey
      @brasshnkey 5 місяців тому

      Why? Ambassadeurs use German made GRW bearings that are very high quality. Here is a 30 year old 4500C that's factory stock with the exception of the carbon drag. This is just a two bearing reel, all the rest are bushings.

    I do alot of bank fishing and I've been in situations where 5 or 10 yards would get me to the cover I'm trying to target. So $30 for 10 yards is worth it to me.

      👊 welcome to the channel. I am all about the budget anglers. If I can do something like this and let folks make up their own minds then I have done my job. It is all perspective. You can take a $30 reel add new bears and have a $60 reel that preforms like a $100 one. Or you can say I am happy with just just the reel as it comes. No wrong answer here just give everyone the info. 👊

      makes me wonder what kinda gunk you're grinding into these tiny bearings to make them fail, a squirt of bp blaster and some super light oil oughta bring them pretty damn near back to brand new. xcr ultra bearing sets for $71 are a helluva upgrade but if you never clean'en they'll stick and gunk up as well.

    • @B_the_Cameraman
      @B_the_Cameraman  4 роки тому +1

      While I would tend to agree with you. I believe we both can agree for some this is a better option to spend a total of $60 for a reel with upgraded bearings rather then $100 on a reel that would equal it out of the box.

    Higher end shimano reels come stock with bearings that are equal to the performance of the spool speed bearings. However I just bought 2 slx DC reels, the slx series doesnt come with the performance bearings and I already have spool speed bearings that will fit these reels. Im going to see if they help or not, with the dc technology Im doubting it will do much but its worth a try

    Did you give the OEM bearings a fair shake? Meaning a deep cleaning and a drop of oil? I think you'd be pleasantly surprised by the results. Out of the box, many manufacturers either use a light grease or too much oil in the bearings. They come from a mass produced environment where speed in production is the motive and not the end performance. Comparing a brand new clean bearing with your own lubricant applied versus a factory pre-lubricated bearing isn't a fair comparison. Level the playing field; clean both, oil both, and repeat the test. Otherwise this is just a video meant to sell product with results that only appear valid to the uninitiated.

I would think if you put them on a shimano and put on braking 2 it would spin too much and back lash. Great video though, keep up the great work.
