  • In late 2018, I ran across a rare find on eBay. It was a red version of the famous Yamaha RGZ 820R Blues Saraceno model. I was totally blown away by the guitar so I restored it and modded to pups from 2 wire to 5 wire so I could have a five way switch. But the bug was just getting started... I found the next RGZ 721 DMR by accident (while scrolling on the throne till the legs go numb looking at guitars) and it was yet an incredible and rare find. So then I started to actively search for 90s RGZ guitars. I felt especially drawn to the reverse headstock RGZs with the big logo. I was originally looking for the Plaid version way before all the others and missed out on a few here and there on ebay and reverb but I finally got a signed #007 Plaid after 10 others from Blues Saraceno's manager that owned a store in the northeast where he grew up. I had to pokemon these things so I taught my wife to play guitar. She now has 6 guitar and 2 Basses. That's how you do that.
    The BB5000 in white was part of a collection of a buddy that passed away in 2017 by the Name of Mike Burke. I was super lucky to be able to afford to buy his entire life's collection of basses and audio equipment. That's a different story. The Black BB5000 was hanging in front of me at a small local shop where I was having some work done to a custom build. I couldn't believe my eyes and it was made in Japan! Bought it that second. 3 other RGZ guitars didn't make the video due to being restored. A 321P RGZ III and a 521D are still to come.
    The Weddington Custom was a huge leap from the super strats but turned out to be by far one of the finest guitars I've ever held. If you can find one, get it. Good luck finding one
    I hope you enjoyed this video and I done a ton of restore videos of all of these guitars breaking each of them down and will doing a full review on each one in the future. Please share and subscribe and I'll make sure to put out some kickass videos again soon. LATER! Chris Schmitt

    Excellent video. I bought a Taiwanese RGZ 312 brand new in about 1990 and still play it. I never see it in the YT vids posted about Yamaha's Superstrats. I suppose it's at or near the low end of the range, but it's still nice. It's split coil HSS, 24 frets, Floyd Rose licensed locking nut whammy. Beautiful red over metallic finish, no pickguard, one volume one tone, all black pickups and hardware. Plays well and sounds good.

    • @chromaticmusic
      @chromaticmusic  Рік тому

      Trust me, it's not low end at all. The necks of the 3 series are the same through 456 as well. The only difference is the hardware and pickups. But all easy to change.

    I have a 321p, white. 30 years and still the takeuchi bridge works perfectly. Scalloped the last 4 frets, otherwise would be fully stock.
    Also had a 421, black, but the neck was twisted and always had issues. Tried to save the neck, but no matter what it wouldn't stay straight, so now is waiting for a new neck.
    Been toying with the idea of having a luthier build a custom guitar based on the 821... and take it to a modern age: same body and headstock with locking tuners, neckthough, slightly scalloped fretboard, same oval markers, dimarzio pups, fishman piezo bridge.

    • @chromaticmusic
      @chromaticmusic  3 роки тому +1

      You could buy a 821DMR and do all those upgrades yourself for much cheaper. $600 for the full guitar and another $500-800 for the parts.

    Looking at the rgz’s after seeing someone playing fusion with great tone… I couldn’t believe the price on these guitars. A little like the revstars, Yamaha seems to be pricing very good guitars very favourably.
    Great collection, all sound great. Don’t know why but the sunburst 821 Taiwan had my favourite tone. You play bass very well too!

    • @chromaticmusic

      Sorry for the late reply, most of my collection is the RGZ/RGX/YG with the same headstock. The version you're referring to is not a series I know very much about. However, I've not held a single Yamaha super strat that didn't hold its own with every other guitar I've ever played. They are Yamahas, simply under rated and under stand instruments.
