Are Tramadol and Gabapentin Effective for Cats and Dogs?

  • "The biggest question that I got today, probably consistently, revolved around 2 drugs: And that was what about tramadol and what about gabapentin, which I didn't talk very much about. And basically, I didn't talk about them, even though they're really popular in the veterinary profession, the data is really counter to using them, in dogs at least. In fact, we have a lot of data that tramadol doesn't work in dogs, virtually every veterinarians using it. So, part of my goal is kind of to dispel the myth.
And gabapentin, we have a handful of papers in both dogs and cats that show that it doesn't work, except maybe in one instance. And as a data-driven veterinarian, coming from an academic background, my job is to present the data to a group like this and then let them make decisions about how they're going to manage that data, and manage their patients."

I just trusted that first gabapentin would work for my dog, because I heard about it so commonly prescribed, but my dog with pancreatitis showed the same pain and discomfort even after the dose was significantly increased by the vet who prescribed it. Then I was prescribed tramadol and I have found it to be equally ineffective. I never doubted that these medications would work for my dog, but sadly, there just was no visible change in her level of discomfort/pain.

seems to be working for my cat though, she has a tooth injury and doesn't sleep well without it

So, what do you suggest to use as an alternative?

Are the studies referenced cited somewhere?
Gabapentin does help my anxious dog relax and helped my elderly arthritic cats rest easier, though I don't think their pain was well controlled. I look forward to new treatment options for kitties especially.

My dog is on both Gabapentin and Tramadol as he has just had spinal surgery. Without either there is noticeable pain (heavy panting, restlessness) but under the surgeon's guidance he takes both and stops panting and sleeps which is exactly what dogs need after spinal surgery to heal and also helps him tolerate his four sessions of physio and massage per day to stimulate muscles.

Absolute BS right here. Don't listen folks gabapentin is great for cats for pain management or when taking them to the vet.

Instead of claiming BS, a more constructive approach would be to formulate testable hypotheses about the discrepancy. For instance, gabapentin in my senior cats didn't increase behaviors such self grooming, jumping on cat trees, time spent with an arched back, or defensiveness to touch (uncharacteristic in younger years). But it did help them sleep more soundly and they seemed to get comfier mode easily. So perhaps there is potential benefit, but not as direct as an NSAID?
I'm not a researcher or vet, just explaining that we should seek to reconcile differences in observations in order to learn the truth, even if it counters our initial belief.

Gabapentin, works for my cat… Made him sooo relaxed, helped with his bladder spams/inflammation in his urethra.. Didn’t make him super sedated either, like the Buprenorphine, that he was taking.. he always moaned & groaned, on the way to the vet, but this last time, the vet gave him Gabapentin, so they could do his cystocentesis for his urinalysis.. and on the way home, he didn’t meow at all! He was just rubbing against my fingers when I had my hand on his carrier.. when we got home, he was soooo affectionate, he kept on ‘talking’ to me.. he definitely did have lack of balance(Ataxia), but that’s a normal side effect, and when the medicine wore off, he was walking just fine. Gabapentin also increased his appetite.. he ate a bunch of food, when we got home.. so the medicine does work… but just like with humans, medicines react differently, in every living being.. it helped my cat, but might not help my neighbors cat.. it just depends on the individuals body & anatomy. For long term use, I wouldn’t recommend, only because cats bodies, are soo tiny.. and I think they shouldn’t be on any medicine long term, unless they have a serious diagnosis, such as; kidney disease, or cancer, etc.. even at that, a lot of medications, are bad for cats who have kidney disease, as the kidneys are what eliminates the medicine from their body. I think medicine in cats & in dogs, should be more adavanced, because these animals are like our children.. however, it hurts my heart, that multiple cats are subjects to testing, with different medications, and then they’re euthanized, so that their organs can be studied, after using the medications.. I don’t like that.. and I wish there were other ways.. medicine has advanced sooo much, so I don’t see why, we can’t find other ways, instead of killing the poor kitties, just to see how the medicine affected the inside, of their bodies.
