  • I thought it was about time for another comparison review and what two better pencils to compare than the Koh-I-Noor Polycolor and the Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, two pencils I am always recommending to colored pencil artists looking for an excellent quality pencil without the crazy price tag.
In this video we take an in-depth comparative look at the Koh-I-Noor and Lyra Polycolor pencils. As well as this UA-cam video review, I have included below links to the written review where you will find a lot more additional information. I also completed art of the exact same image with both pencils, this has been created into a speed drawing video to help demonstrate the pencils as well as still images that you can enlarge and inspect at your own pace.
In the past I have also completed individual reviews of both the Koh-I-Noor Polycolor and Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, in this comparison video I will not be discussing set sizes, availability, pencil dimension etc, however, all of this can be found in the individual reviews. I have included links to these reviews below should you wish to watch or read about them.

I really appreciate your style of reviews. I love how you give the viewer the most objective review without saying that the item is the best or worst just that it is what it is. You are giving people the opportunity to see what the product is capable of doing. It is up to the viewer to decide if the product fits in with their own style. I am never disappointed with your content. Not only that but your artwork is stunning.

I think Lyra are under rated by a lot of people. I love their layering ability, I'm a lots of light layers kind of girl and the lyra just seems to be able to layer and layer and layer. It means my artwork almost glows. Their main problem to me is their colour selection in their 24 and 36 set. They are a bit samey and uninspiring. But they have a lovely range of colours in the 72 set They should rejig their ranges. Also their colour identifiers are abysmal. It would be nice if they made more colours. But great beginners and hobbyist pencils.

I completely agree with you, Lyra Polycolor and Koh-I-Noor Polycolor are two of the most underrated pencils in my opinion. I have tested and reviewed them both extensively over a 5 year period, testing on many different surfaces etc and your so right about the layering ability of the Lyra.
I wish both companies tried to have their pencils rated under either the Blue Wool or ASTM standards for lightfast, I think this is possibly what is holding back their popularity. However, having said that, they would have to increase the price of the pencils significantly and that would not be too well accepted by many artists.
I think too many of us, myself included want our cake and eat it. We want highly lightfast pencils at cheap prices, none of which is going to happen of course.
With regards to the pigment identifiers, this is the case with all pencils and markers, even a lot of Watercolor tubes and pans. This is why I never talk about pigment identifiers accuracy on my reviews, because over the years I have determined this.
So forget about the pigment identifiers on the actual pencils for a second. If you take the Lyra or any pencil, apply two light layers on Bristol Smooth, two light layers on 300 Series Mixed Media, two light layers on 500 Series Bristol Plate and two light layers on Fabriano Artistico, you will notice that the same pencil produces subtle differences in tone on all papers. This is due to the different surfaces and they way each surface grabs hold of the pencil core. They are not huge differences but they are clear. This is why I always suggest once you buy a new set of pencils, if you can, swatch them on the same paper you are likely to create your art on. I know this isn’t always going to be possible because fine art paper can be expensive and can not always be used for swatching.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and support I really appreciate it.

I have all two sets and both brands are excellent. Some colors in Koor I Noor have its own specialization, so both of them can support each other for color choice. Koor I Noor is more affordable than Lyra but can't be found much on Ebay. Koor I Noor more vivid than Lyra but I think each branch have its own techniques to explore and practice. Thank for your review, it's always great !

You're so generous in sharing your experience and information. I admire you for it -- you have the teacherly spirit.
Looking at the diffusion and blend you got from the mineral spirit on the simple blue sphere, it looks like Lyra has richer pigment. It's something to consider if it is generally so across the whole palette. Appreciate the chance to actually see it. Thanks for your tutorial and review work. I look forward to seeing more of it.

I bought the Lyra box set on a recommendation when I was looking for something between Poly Chromos and Prisma. I would disagree that Lyra is that, but I do like them, especially the greys which came in my box set. They could very likely be my favorite set of greys in all my sets and I have all the top-end professional lightfast ones. I like them because they are simple, and mix seamlessly with their pencils without muddying up the colors too much. I wish they were softer because that is what I was looking for but they are a good oil pencil that is definitely softer than Poly Chromos, just one step down from Poly Chromos in quality. My ONLY real complaint about them is they do not have enough light colors, especially in the red and blue purples. I was constantly grabbing lighter pencils from other brands for my highlights because their white was not strong enough to tint their base colors. But I will also say they have some of the most vibrant red and green I have ever seen and your ladybug vividly illustrated why I like them. I love saturated pigments and Lyra has that aplenty. I always have good quality white pencils so that was no big deal breaker for me. Very worth the price I paid for something lightfast, and open stock on Blick to buy again.

Thank you. That was a fantastic review. Thank you for the info about in house lightfastness testing. I bought the 36 set of kohinoor polycolors. I have a small set of premiere colorprismas. When I was doing research, I came across some reviews that stated many of the color prisms had low lightfastness rating. Some people had done tests on the products where they left the papers outdoors or in direct sunlight for several months. In Canada the polychromos are, of course very expensive and the Kohinoor polycolors are more expensive than most. But so far, I am quite happy with the kohinoors polycolors. They are a beautiful pencil and the cedarwood smells amazing. Perhaps in the near future they'll sign on for Blu or ASTM, if I got that right. It would be great but perhaps kohinoor has more stringent testing since there pencil casing is obviously of superior quality. It is certainly far superior to prisma. I love using my pencils for some fine detail work when I do oil pastel paintings. Mind you, I also use a blending stump. I use some sennelier, specialist and I absolutely love Mungyo artist quality soft oil pastels. So far so good as far as colorfastness goes. Oil paint and acrylics are so much easier and quicker in many respects. I have come to realize it's worth spending extra for top or good quality. It makes life easier and produces superior quality workmanship. Mind you, some art supply stores have their own professional quality products manufactured for slightly less than top names. This is so exciting. I am so relieved and happy to finally be able to draw and paint. Your work is beautiful. Again thank you so much for putting so much detail and effort into your reviews. It makes me feel like it is very well planned and detailed. okay enough of my two in the morning rambling here in Canada. Even though I got vaccinated, I still got infected with covid I think from some drunk fighting neighbours I was trying to help. They were the only people that I never wore a mask around, was in close contact for prolonged time. One of the so called women had been at home in bed for a few days supposedly with depression. Then she came over to our apartment complex yelling and crying at her exboyfriend. She couldn't stand so I helped. I think they knew she was sick but just denied it. I think that's kind of mean. It's so unnecessarily cruel because this past two weeks has been touch and go, I have no one to help me make meals. Thank goodness I had a few things I made. My daughter dropped off some groceries. So it's true, it really hurts, it's very difficult to breathe, you get a fever, no smell, skin feels like it's burning, a bit forgetful, bad burning headache, your brain feels like it's burning, drinks lots of water, vitamin c, put a piece of lemon, clove cinnamon on to boil and inhale steam. Put eucalyptus oil, Vicks rub, a drop clove oil in chamber of vaporizer with seasalt in Water. Drink lot of water and homemade bone broth with vegetables and rice or barley. Coffee good for lungs asthma puffers, rest. Read, lots of Kleenex and water, hot lemon honey ginger, cloves and cinnamon tea. Yeo curcumin root good too and homemade hot meals. Easy. Keep away from sugar and process except for instant oats lots of eggs omelettes. Porks, livers, codliver oil pills, beef stew, well cook garlic and cabbage. The garbage food will make you feel worse. This disease eats up your muscle if you dinnay eat. Hit me up if you need help. Again, my dear, you have the best reviews. Hoorah❣️🙏🙏🏼 much blessings and love to you and all. Stay safe. Do wear masks. Avoid contact with known assholes. Sorry, but they don't care about others well being. Stay safe. May you God's goddesses and angels be with you. Much loves❣️❣️😇🥰🥰✌️

The muted pigment of the Koh I Noor doesn't bother me, but the texture does. I'd definitely reach for Lyra for that reason alone. Thanks for the comparison, it's helpful. Koh I Noor went on sale at Michael's and I wasn't sure if I should go for them, but I don't think I'd use them based on the way they blend here for the type of art I like to make.

Thank you for the comparison review. When I began using colored pencil I was on a quest for “the” colored pencil . The set/brand that would be the best pencils for the artwork/coloring I do. Of course I’ve grown and am understanding that it depends on the effect I am aiming to achieve and how to combine different brands/types of pencils to get the effect. Another gain that I have attained from watching your videos is subscribing to Ann Kullberg’s Colored Pencil Magazine. I originally thought 💭 it would only be good for flipping through and admiring advanced artist . I now know there are sections aimed at teaching skills to the beginner artist. With the tracing apps available , I can use my phone or tablet to trace the images such as the 💎 gemstone in one of last year’s issues and follow the instructions/example to develop my skills. I do have a question regarding your UA-cam videos. If I watch the ads/commercials in their entirety does it benefit your channel financially? ( I am hoping all UA-camrs gain something for this)Thank you for the thorough review. You’re the best.

I've come to the conclusion that it's better to have a good 12 set of soft and a good 12 set of hard pencils to start for sketchbooks, don't need lightfastness there. Then if/when you do anything that's likely to see daylight, do that in a lightfast pencil. Ideally the cheaper sets should be available open stock, but if it's cheap enough to rebuy a new 12 set then it's not a problem. I'm going to pick up the 12 Chromaflow, 12 Koh-I-Noor and 12 Cretacolor Karmina's; they're all cheap with the CC's being the most expensive, but the colours look interesting.
