i thought so too, its the only ones i know of that makes sense. lighting is very yellow/warm so i assumed they are a white barrel pencil with colour dipped ends looking that way due to lighting.
I watched it a few times again and I am beginning to think you are right. The pink is bouncing off the walls making the pencils appear pink. It's that or there could actually be boutiques in LA that sell their own "Fancy" pencils. I am leaning toward the Irojatin. Irojatin pencils look long too and that fits the illusion that those pencils look a drop longer than a normal pencil. Another reason I am thinking you are right is that the colors are very specific in that jar. They are all skin tone or muted colors. The way the Irojatin is packaged is by color group and those colors fit with the pack that has the exact color group.

Thank you Lori for defending one of my favorite oil- colored pencils, "Lyra". A video like this, as you mentioned, does un-necessary damage to a very old professional company. I am not a professional, simply a hobbyist but I do know the difference between the feel and lay down of an oil and wax colored pencil. Lyra is one of my go to pencils always on my messy desk with my Prismas,, Star Joy gold and Markart . This is my humble opinion. You have taught me so much and I have great respect for your work, thank you. You and your family are in my prayers, I have walked in your shoes my husband had a 20 year painful battle before his passing.
I just bought a Lyra box set and I have not been able to put them down for 3 weeks. I LOVE them. My ONLY complaint is the barrels are not right, like in the greens they have darker barrels but the core is lighter. I don't really care about names and numbers because I tend to grab my pencils at the beginning of a project (and I mix all kinds of pencils in projects because that is how I roll) and I just look at the tip or barrel to remember the tonal value and use it on a piece of paper first to make sure I am not grabbing the wrong undertone (blues I am looking at you, your violet undertones mess up my pictures if I am not careful but I have conquered your muddy mess thanks to Lori teaching us how to see undertones), I can not use the barrel color for keeping tonal values straight in the Lyra, I have to look at tips which are fine, especially now that I am using the Purple Squishies.
I have Lyra Watercolor Pencils and I have checked into their lightfast and the are comparable to all other professional brands. They are great when for people with a limited budget to get professional grade pencils. They are not as cheap as budget pencils but the are midway between the Faber-Castell and Arteza in price. I love supperRayDizzle as well!
Thank you for this video. I watched Rae's this morning and even though I don't use Lyra, I was thinking maybe she was a bit too quick to jump to conclusions. Your clarification is much appreciated.
Lyra are the best pencils easily available in South Africa. I love them! Polychromos are really expensive here so I only have a few of them. Personally, I think Colleens are softer than Prismacolor...they certainly break more easily!
Hi there, I also have Lyra set of 72. They really lovely. I'm not sure where to purchase the Colleen from and what to compare them to. I did end up purchasing the Prismacolor from Amazon last year which worked out much cheaper than the Faber Castell Polychromos because I wanted a big range of colours.
I'm also in South Africa and I have a LOT of pencil brands (including Faber-Castell Polychromos, Caran D'Ache Luminance, Prismacolors, Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor Pencils, Cretacolor, Koh-I-Noor, Marco Raffine and Colleen). Honestly, I'm not a massive fan of the Lyras, but I LOVE the Marco Raffine and Colleen coloured pencils. I think both of those brands are terribly underrated, and I'm surprised that more colouring artists don't use them. :)
I'm also from South Africa, getting my 72 set Lyra pencils tomorrow. I personally love harder pencils for detail work. Polychromos will always be my nr one go to, and my most precious art supply in my studio. Love collecting art supplies so I am always on the lookout for something new or interesting. (art shops are my biggest weakness I think.) 😂🎨
Let me preface this by saying that I am a huge fan of Rae's. I am subscribed to both of her channels and have been for awhile now. While I was watching her video, I was thinking the same thing about the Lyra pencils, that you talk about in this video. I own Lyra pencils, and I would say that they are very good artist quality pencils. I enjoy using them. They are not as hard as Polychromos or Koh I Noor. They are not as soft as Derwent Lightfast pencils, Star Joy Gold or Marco Tribute pencils. They are somewhere in the middle as far as hardness. They have a nice color payout after layering. I agree with you about (maybe)her lack of experience with using this type of pencil especially after watching her swatch out the colors. She looks to use a heavier pressure when she colors. As far as the pencils that Kim had, I am not sure what they are, but I once bought my daughter some colored pencils at an art museum that had solid beige/cream barrels and the ends were colored to match the color of the cores. I am pretty sure that they were a white label product, so maybe the stylist found something similar to what I had bought. I have a couple of sets of pencils that have a natural wood finish barrels and like you said there is a lot of wood grain that is visible. For an excellent review of the Lyra pencils, check out the Art Gear Guide.
She definitely is very heavy handed. I remember cringing hard, when i saw who she used Polychromos. Even though she liked the Polychromos and i'm also a fan of her, the brute force she used to color was hard to watch for me. Polychromos as well as Lyra (who are well loved pencils of mine too) live from layering them.
I agree. You can tell she is self taught. Her final outcome is really nice. I like a lot of her art, but I don't always agree with her reviews especially when she uses a pencil incorrectly and accuses them of having too much filler. I am not 100% sure she understands what she says. If a pencil has good pigmentation then there is higher quality other things in it too. In one video she was comparing crayola to a professional pencil and that was kind of cringe worthy. Be fair to these companies at the number of subscribers she has. She can do unsubstantiated damage. She can also get sued.
I love the Lyras, although I started off the wrong foot with them, but once I had a little more experience, I could not let them go! They do have the reputation of being somewhat difficult to get used to. Personally, I think the Luminance are the closest pencils for comparison. And mixing both works wonders!
Thanks for the video. I love my polychromos and Lyra pencils. I’m learning to love my Prismacolors. I need the finer detail that the mostly oil based pencils provide. Thanks for the video. If I would have watched the other one, I may not have made the leap to Lyra.
Those definitely look like prop pencils lol. Interesting I always thought some pencils were made from compressed wood like Ikea furniture. I've had a set of those Lyra pencils for about a year and still haven't used or swatched them 😆
Thank you for doing this video. I was so frustrated watching someone who frankly should know better as an artist influencing literally millions of people. You can’t compare cheaper oil to professional wax pencils as you said apples and oranges. You’re just the best with Videos and informing us all on these details. Keep up the great work.
I don't believe any of the props in that room have been used. I have three children and believe me, they used everything and I me everything we bought for them. My kids art supplies looked like they were being used. I do agree with your very logical deductions. You sound much better, I hope you and your family are feeling better!😏
Lyra pencils were my first pencils. I did some of my best work with them. I am an equine artist and I keep my Lyras close. I can't get a better rose grey coat from any other brand. I have all the caran d'ache, Faber Castell, and Derwent pencils. I will always use my Lyras.
I too think that those white-barrelled pencils are Tombow Irojiten--they are really distinctive. Regarding Lyra Polycolor, I got my 72-set some years ago from a local (Hong Kong) art supplies store. I didn't immediately notice the set was manufactured in China (instead of Germany), and it was unreturnable anyway. Also I was even able to buy some spares open stock. Over time, I don't particularly dislike them, as I still use them alongside my other oil pencils--I'm a mixed brand colorist. My Lyra set is amongst the "driest" (for lack of a better description) in the mix, therefore I tend to use it as the last layer or as a "blending" pencil even though I am still layering (with medium pressure at most). So I guess my opinion/experience with Lyra might not be the same as most of you who use the German-made version. One more thing, about the core size, although Lyra's barrels appear to be thinner than most colored pencils, the core width is actually an impressive 4.0mm--the same as Derwent Lightfast and even thicker than FC Polychromos' 3.8mm!
From what I understand they are mostly made in China now. Only sets that say "Made in Germany" are from there. Lyra with Germany under the lyra are all made in China. The Lyra looks like a 3.3 . That's pretty thin but helpful with small details. For comparison Prisma is a 3.7, Star-Joy Gold 3.7. Lyra does have a line of fat barrels that are 6 mm. They are kind of nice to color with. Something different.
I watched that video and I did notice she didn't identify the difference between wax and oil, compared ONE oil based pencil to TWO wax based pencils. Also, pretty sure the pencils in Kim's video are the Artist's Loft pencils. 🤷♀️
Well, I live under a rock. I've never heard of Lyra. And the pencils you see in that cup, could they be burnishing sticks? As a beginner and at this time, I'm just sticking with my Prismacolor and one other set which will be your Star Joy Gold. (❁´◡`❁)
Thank you Lori for defending Lyra pencils and pointing out that there is a difference between wax and oil pencils. It's a pity she is uneducated and spreading "lies" about the company. It's obvious to even a beginner like me the difference between wax and oil. No offence, but I am so glad I found you years ago and you know your shit!!!
I don't think Rae is uneducated, she claims to have a BA degree of some sort of art school and I don't have a reason to doubt that. But she's judging rash and harsh if something is not working like she'd thought it would.
@@katalinelo8011 When your an artist their is no can't do. Being an artist means you make amazing art with what you have. "I can't work with crayola because I can't get realism!"Oh really?! Let me point you to the many amazing drawings made with only crayola pencils. I believe John Lennon once said "I'm an artist, you give me a trash can I'll make music out if it."
I really hope you commented on Rae's video. I do watch her occasionally, she's great. BUT to not know there are differences between oil and wax pencils??? And Lyra are a very old brand, one of the German originals. I believe they used to make cores for Faber Castell? Please correct if I got this wrong, I know one of the German brands did. Anyway, the brand has been around for a very long time. They are known to be a very good artist quality oil pencil, on a par with Polychromos. The price is better than Polychromos, and they remain the ONLY artist quality pencil I own a set of. I got a great bargain with them and I love them to bits.
Lyra pencils are great! I really like them and how they lay down. I like Rae's videos as well. But I agree with you, Lori. Lyra rocks! Love you and your channel lots xoxo
Yippee!!! Just got my Color Wheel from Amazon. I hear the Peanuts theme song in my head, with Snoopy's head up dancing around. Thank you so much for listing art supplies in your description page. It makes it so easy to order. (❁´◡`❁)
That room is a child's nightmare. They can't possibly have fun being so organized. Can you imagine color coding the legos? Replacing crayons each time the kid uses one. Our playroom looked like a nighmare, but the kids always had fun.
Why would I even care what the Kardashian’s children are using? I’m sure they are the ones that but the LV and Gucci pencils 🤣, vulgar, new money bunch. Rae’s target audience is a much younger crowd than adult colorists, she caters to that. However, since she did go to art school, It’s kind of strange that she never heard of the Lyra brand.
This is interesting, because I rarely pay attention if a pencils is wax or oil based. Most of the time I don't know if they are wax or oil other than the two obvious ones only because everyone mentions it. Most pencils feel similar to me with few exceptions like the inexpensive Crayolas which are hard as rocks and aggravate the arthritis in my hand. Beyond that, I haven't met a pencil I truly disliked. They are all fine.
And for the Lyra pencils! Ummm believe or not, I don't have any. But I've never seen anything bad about them! The luminess pencils! I've been collecting as I go,order a few here and a few there. Love them! They stay in my happy place, and get used on special items!🤣😂👍❤️🥰
I agree!! You cannot compare high name brands to cheaper brands. Especially can’t compare anything to the top dog Caran D’ache for anything they make, IMO...with that said. I like my Lyra pencils for different reasons than my luminance...kinda disappointed in Rae for this one ☝🏼
Yeah, unfortunately I have seen her do that a time or two before and all I could do was shake my head. Got say though, after getting “roasted” for it it by quite a few of her viewers, she did come back later with an updated version video, where she did much better. Saw that happen to another artist too, with the result that she also came back about a year later with a new updated version of the video and debunked what she had originally said about a particular pencil set. I think one thing that happens is that they are trying to do a review of something in minutes and as we know most pencils need layers and when they just go in with hard pressure right from the get go, they just aren’t going to get the results. Which is something else I have to shake my head about. If they are professional artists, they should know better than trying to do a good review in a matter of just a few minutes, unless they do it as a time lapse, in which case you can see the development of the image that they are doing.
I know this is about pencils but i'm also a doll collector and she made quite a point to mention those OMG dolls. MGA Entertainment watch out!😂 I'm just so amused and how none of the crayons were used and stuff.
Don't worry about what Rae Dizzle says. She is not using top notch supplies and is stuck on her cheap Crayola most of the time. She is also not very knowkegeable about the pro art supplies, most of the time, and I have caught it many times that she is wrong about products or is using stuff incorrectly. Yes she says she went to art school but she clearly is not very knowlegeable about the high end European art supplies or about how to use the supplies. I already have to cringe when i see her drawing with colored pencils, because she still draws like a 10 year old without the care of fingertip feeling and care etc.
Hi Lori! Boy, am I behind in watching videos! I dropped my phone and it must have hit at the perfect angle or way on my driveway and the screen not only shattered but broke leaving sharp edges sticking up. I'm amazed that it still worked but it made it impossible to see anything. Thanks to my best friend who got a new iPhone for free and gave me her "old" Samsung galaxy. Anyway, one thing to keep in mind regarding the pencils in the video is all the photo and video filters and editing apps. It appeared to me that parts in the video looked a bit blurred or softened. I hope all is well with you and yours! 😘
I bought lyra and I have tried them. They are very difficult to blend. I hate them. I actually prefer my crayolas over these. I will most likely sell them on EBAY.
I think I remember from a long time ago, that she had used them once, but I could be wrong. Before I started watching your channel, I had been watching her. I think I'm still subbed but notifications are turned off. I just think it's impossible she's never heard of them, I knew of them when I was just a tiny fledgling, I knew of them right around the time I was getting into Prismas.
She also mugged the Polychromos. Not just the Lyra Polycolor. Dont give a hoot about what Rae Dizzle says. Honestly I stopped watching her videos because she is not evolving from Crayola.
I like Lyra alot..easier to use then the few Faber polychhronos I have. Maybe KK should open a daycare and invite some children to actually play in that room..but are they props? 🤣
Rae colors like a little kid: Iron Fisted Heavy Pressure. She Refuses, to learn how to ease up... and instead, blames the Products, for the issues she is having. She likes Crayola, because Crayola are designed with Kids heavy-pressure usage in mind... and thus they are formulated to react differently, to make it easier for kids to use them. She clearly has little knowledge of the basic fundamentals of art, such as proper shading, shadows...etc.. and her useless art Gimmicks (such as choosing art supplies while blindfolded), caused me to unsub real fast. While she is capable of producing some decent art.. its mostly via copying things note for note. When you have to shade something that you have no reference for... things change drastically, as you then really need to know the Principals of how shading, shadows, texture, and colors... all work, in depth.
How do you know what type of artist Rae is? She doesn't color like a child and I happen to think her videos are fun and educational. She gave her opinion. Some people do not like wax pencils, some people don't like oil pencils. Please don't let this become petty like what happened with Becks n Books. She no longer has a channel and I respected her opinions.
@@tracy8338 I used to watch her. She Openly stated, many times, that she uses heavy pressure. Ive also Seen her use products incorrectly, due to her using too much pressure.. eating up too much tooth of the paper... and then complaining about how the product would no longer Layer. This isnt some Petty Dig. Its a legitimate observed criticism, backed with actual evidence. The oil vs wax thing, isnt the issue. The issue is a lack of dedicated fine motor control... and blaming products for it.
@@tracy8338 Part 2: As for her content being "Educational"... not really. There are a Lot of superior artists here, that explain things far better... and will teach you a Lot more. Rae again, is mostly a copier. She knows how to copy.. but she never really fully learned the basic foundations of how to shade. Ive witnessed her make laughably awful mistakes on her works.. due to this lack of knowledge (when there were no sources for her to copy). If she spent less than 20$ for a basic book... she could likely gain the correct knowledge, and become good... within a very short period of time. However... she is stubborn, and just wants to do it "Her way". Which again, is why she refuses to learn pressure control. As a result, she will never advance past a certain level. Her works will always be flawed. She will continue to struggle with various supplies and techniques. And anyone that follows her, isnt going to learn much from her. There is a difference between liking someone, and being objective. Im not attacking her as a person. (I dont know her like that) Im being critical of her Artistic knowledge and skillsets... and agreeing with what this channel has posted.
Agreed man and not just that, she made a video where she explained on which topics she struggles, and that included for example hands, circles ,straight lines, poses, backrounds, etc. Those can be improved by just by practicing and doing them, they do not improve by their own. And like you said she refuses to learn and never will pass certain level, she stays as an eternal beginner, only sticking with topics which are already easy to do. Thats not a mentality that advanced artists have, they have done things that are hard to them and thats why they are so good.

I think they are Cretacolor Mega colored pencils.
I only like the oil pencils . I love my polys . I took an art class and used polys . Ty for your video .
What a horrible room!!! All white! Nothing on the walls … oi … all too too organized …wayyyy to sterile! Thats no kids room! Thats a show room!
Kims whole house is like that.
Ut oh... Just keep in mind it's something quirky and um... love you Yazmin! Don't hate me for next weeks videos :) Spoiler alert
I love the Lyra pencils! I watched for a good deal on Amazon then I bought another set as they had a crazy cheap price.
They could be Cretacolor Mega, which I love.
You are wrong dome pencils are made of compressed wood. Which unfortunately Staedtler changed their Noris line to.
I think they could be Martha Stewart Pencils
I love my Lyra Polycolor! You can have an opinion, but she should state it that way. How she dismissed the pencils is awful.
Judge Judy stand aside!! Lol
I don't believe Rae had never heard of Lyra
I think I remember from a long time ago, that she had used them once, but I could be wrong. Before I started watching your channel, I had been watching her. I think I'm still subbed but notifications are turned off. I just think it's impossible she's never heard of them, I knew of them when I was just a tiny fledgling, I knew of them right around the time I was getting into Prismas.
I could.
I have no idea how I got here but... go on..
That's exactly what I say driving anywhere new.
She also mugged the Polychromos. Not just the Lyra Polycolor. Dont give a hoot about what Rae Dizzle says. Honestly I stopped watching her videos because she is not evolving from Crayola.
Quote of the day. lol!
"Streaks on her swatches" a well known medical condition
For a small fee I will Streaks your swatches
