SWAT team in Texas tears open truck to arrest driver during highway standoff

- Police in Houston, Texas used an armored battering ram to pry open the cabin of an 18-wheeler to arrest the driver following an hours-long standoff on Wednesday.
Police stopped the truck, which was moving slowly along the East Freeway, but the driver refused to exit the vehicle, according to ABC Affiliate KTRK,
Using a heavy vehicle known as "rook", police tore through the cabin's window and passenger side door and used a police dog and gas canisters to subdue the driver.
Aerial footage showed a SWAT team dragging the driver out of the cabin. The driver, whose face was covered in blood, was then placed on a gurney.
The main lanes of the East Freeway were shut down in both directions near Sheldon Road, trapping drivers in gridlock for hours, KTRK reported.

That's concerning to me too. Seems like if this kind of force was justified we would all know the reason for this much of a show of force, but since they're not saying after so many people have asked we can only assume that the answer is embarrassing to the police.

My brother is also a truck driver. I don't know what actually happened in this situation. But I have sort of a feeling that police did use excessive power and I am on the driver's side.
The truck driver is still, you never see him offering resistance, nor violence on his part, I don't understand why so much violence on the part of the police.

I think I heard DOT went to stop for a simple light out? Pretty much a normal thing, unless you’re a 4 wheeler pulling a trailer in the hammer lane with absolutely ZERO lights!!🤷♂️. But I digress. He should’ve pulled over, instead he runs. When it’s all said and done and the truck stops moving probably should’ve just gave it up. We’re the cops over doing it? No, dude had every opportunity to do the right thing.
Upon some digging, apparently this truck was driving along the highway, there is no reason given for them wanting to initially pull it over. The guy refused to stop and continued driving on, they spiked the wheels, they disabled the truck, but he stayed in his cab and continued to try and drive the truck (you can see one of the wheels in the video still rolling), which is why they blocked it from the front with the other truck. The entire time the swat team was destroying the truck to get into it, the driver sat in the drivers seat and continued to try and drive the truck, the dog went in and mauled him while he sat trying to drive away, they pulled him out and he remained trying to drive the truck away that was what he was holding onto, the steering wheel when they ripped him from the truck. Basically he had a mental break and was just driving the truck.....I guess they thought they needed to do all of that to take out someone who obviously was having a mental breakdown. I guess they don't try and have someone talk to them anymore...its smash down door for refusing to exit vehicle, and set the dog upon them, then manhandle them out of the truck...then worry about why he mentally snapped. At no time was anyone in danger until the police and swat got involved. Typical Texas police officers....if they had only put that much effort into pulling out a gunman in a school, maybe things could have been different.

He was stopped in a moving lane of traffic on I-10 on the east side of Houston. Sheriff's deputies went to see what the problem was, and the driver fled. Fleeing law enforcement in a motor vehicle in Texas is a felony.
The driver refused to exit the cab, and became a barricaded individual. As is policy in the metro area, barricaded suspects have a SWAT response.

For anyone wondering, there’s an updated video by this news crew on the reason why: the trucker stopped his big rig in the middle of highway 10. Concerned and annoyed traffic called police. Police came and trucker fled. Trucker then pulled over and sat in cab for 2 more hours. SWAT was called in.. you know the rest. They suspect he may have been intoxicated.

Is this what it looks like to get arrested for drunk driving in Abbott's Texas? You call in the Swat team and have your truck destroyed? I understand the trucker wasnt cooperating, but Ive seen other police departments handle noncooperating drunks easier than this. What am I missing in this story or is this normal in Texas?
There's a lot of talk about supposedly shutting the country down because of the lack of pay that comes down to the lowly truck driver. This guy might have been on the radio with guys talking about that and decided he was going to do something instead of just talking😮

SWAT is completely unhinged in this country.
A few years ago, a guy in a luxury apartment in Irvine, CA (safest city in America by FBI stats) was jacked up in front of his wife and 6 year old child while they ate brunch after church.
They completely destroyed this guy's apartment.
Turns out, they got the wrong guy.
The guy they wanted had moved away and the new tenant was mistakenly raided.
The SWAT never apologized.
They never compensated the guy for the damage they caused.
They got a new toy for Christmas and had to try it
They got to try out the destruction robot, cool.
I'm not usually one for the new Internationals (I'm a Marmon man), but this rig did look pretty nice with its flag decor and it was sad seeing it get ripped apart. I'm not too sure why the driver took off, supposedly the truck was empty which could mean that it was stolen, or the trucker was impaired or disgruntled. If the stop was initiated by the DOT then it's possible that this was a form of protest against the bs they pull on truckers. Interested to see where this story goes but I can't make out who's the bigger idiot based on what we know at the moment.

Only in Texas will you have a staunch conservative flag waving trucker with a load of Chinese made products derived from nafta coming through Mexico listening to Rush while delivering to wallmart lol that's America for you.
If that rig belongs to this driver, insurance will likely not cover this damage because he failed to comply with law enforcement directions. That's an expensive lesson for this driver or for whoever owns this truck.

With the way police are portrayed in American media literally demands that they take every precautions possible. If the driver was to get seriously injured, the cops get blamed regardless of the criminals actions. If a cop gets injured or killed, they portrayed as inept and not worthy to serve. So their only hope of not getting sued and/or fired is to do absolutely everything possible to limit injuries on both sides. It's almost guaranteed that the cops directly involved in this are going to get sued by this man's family for the injuries caused by the dog and how he was removed. These cops are just trying to make the public happy while minimizing risk, and yet they still get crapped on for it.

It’s possible he had a diabetic hypoglycemic event. People in that condition will appear drunk and incoherent or even semi-conscious. All first responders are taught that, it’s in the most basic first aid course. Except apparently in Texas.
@@rayray8687that is a false statement, a lot of police departments are not trained on that, and many have died from this because they mistakenly believe were drunk.
But this officer have to still treat it like the person is a threat until they know for certain that he is not. That is the first thing all first responders are trained to do is scene safety.

Sure. And so does running from the cops while you're detained. He was stopped in a traffic lane and a cop pulled up to see what was going on and the guy took off. The guy was obviously drunk or stoned. Texas state law requires them to call swat in situations like this. If you don't like it, vote different.

Looks like the SWAT took this as a field training opportunity for them to send that many heavily armed officers just to arrest 1 driver for a broken taillight.
