He was called and asked to play Johnny Cage in the actual MK1 in the early '90s but, he denied the role then. Here we are like 30 years later and finally got him.
For everyone saying this isn’t true, he recently said on an interview on “hot ones” that Jean Claude Van Damme inspired MK and that it was originally supposed to JCVD fighting game because of the movie bloodsport
Jean Claude is known worldwide for his ability to do the splits. In Bloodsport, he literally does the splits to punch balls move, Johnny Cages signature move from the first Mortal Kombat 1. So you could say that Bloodsport was an influence on Mortal Kombat as well.
This was literally DECADES in the making and I’m so happy to finally see this come to fruition.

Whatever issues plague my games these days, there’s always some good on the horizon.

OMG it's finally happening!! YAY!!!! I just want to cry right now. LOL It's amazing how the inspiration for Johnny Cage came about, and quite possibly how MK even started based on how both it and Bloodsport are very similar. My love for martial arts came from this movie, so naturally I wanted MK when it first came out in the 90s for SNES, and I've been hooked on MK ever since.
Thank you Ed Boone for not only keeping this AMAZING franchise going, but to finally get Van Damme in the MK universe is just incredible. The love you have for this franchise and and for all of us fans, you just keep making MK better and better. I hope this franchise will never die. MORTAL KOMAT!!!!! :)

Just just for Johnny, but for the entire game series. MK started as an attempt to make a JCVD game, but either he declined, or his agents said no and it never got to him.
This game is bout to sell double what MK11 sold simply because of this.

JCVD is my idol since I was a kid. I’ve waited YEARS for him to be available for MK. The movie Bloodsport was the basis for the original game that spawned an amazing franchise and one of my favorites

He was the inspiration for the game. They wanted to make a game about him when bloodsport was out but it never happened. He's the reason the game was made even if it's not their original vision

Johnny Cage's skin is a tribute to both how Johnny Cage appeared in MK (1992) and to Frank Dux in the movie Bloodsport. While both are similar, there is a distinctive detail: the red color in the classic 1992 skin and the yellow color in Frank Dux's skin. As a compromise, it captures the original MK aesthetic and features a face that closely resembles Jean-Claude Van Damme as he appeared in the 1988 film Bloodsport. If MK1 allows character customization, it would be possible to simply change the color from red to yellow. Otherwise, the modding community could step in to make this modification.

Man, Bloodsport was one of my most viewed childhood movies. Loved it to bits. This is amazing to me. JCVD will always be my favorite 90's action movie star!

Yeah. Gotta love JCVD! I commented on a post of his on FB a couple of years ago. About how much he meant to me growing up (I turn 43 this year). And God damn, he answered! I think I showed all my co-workers, friends and what not 😂 He's pretty active on social media, and he's probably responded to a lot of people. But it meant a lot to me, thought it was cool 😁😁
Hands down the single most watched movie for me personally. 16 yo me would watch it twice a day and stretch every night to try to do the splits.

@@matthewwendt7315 Fun fact: The very first Mortal Kombat game was actually supposed to be a game based off JCVD's movie Bloodsport, but they couldn't get his help with the project or the rights, so they changed it to an original game and used their model of JCVD to make Johnny Cage. Thus, Mortal Kombat was born.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that they're finally able to include him in the game. The animations look smooth and nice, but there's something weird with face models in this game. Especially the women characters are very look alike, and here is another issue with JCVD face that simply does not even look like him in some of the scenes. Really what is going on NR?

this vid has won the internet for me ive watched it like 50 times today. he looks so cool and i like how they used his mk11 trailer music. i like how it's his mk1 outfit but some extra details, like the black belt with red symbols, or his sunglasses being a tint of red. smooth animations of moves hes got some real nice jump kicks and that dance he does before the fatal blow. did anyone notice it said "error macro" on the recording screen?
This trailer is amazing including the fatality which is Johnny’s second being done by Van Damme. Am really happy that Toasty is said during the fatal when the car starts to leave with the enemy’s body.

This is also something I always wanted to see since the original game revolved around JCVD. This is awesome - it would've been real cool to see them do the double / triple camera angle of the same shot as one of the finishing moves or even the "JCVD" grunts when he kicks - that would've been epic!

I think simply re skinning cage was a complete missed opportunity full stop. If they got JCVD to be in this, they could have really upped the ante.
Fatal Blow dance is an homage to it, so it's partially in the game.
There’s a chance it could still be included. The game is still one week from release. Also, NRS could add it later as part of DLC or a patch update.
