ABC did a story on the Highland Park FD in 2013 and they only had seven men to fight two fires on a night during what’s called “Devil’s Week.” On Long Island (New York) all our firefighters and EMT’s are volunteers and they now have a very hard time recruiting new people to join a volunteer force. Three people who I went to high school with joined my local fire department. I have thought about joining myself because I did a junior program when I was in middle school but it’s very hard to make time to volunteer. It’s a great story to see a city’s fire department fully staffed after a very long time and lots of struggle.
