So I'm wanting to change my shaft on my driver (Ladies Flex) versus my 3 wood is a men's shaft - which carries further.
I've tried the loft higher on my driver then my drives are super high (lose distance) too.
Great vid. I had to set my jpx900 to 7.5 to out perform my 3wood.
Think for me, a fitting is the main difference. I hit my Nike Machspeed 4 wood as far as my Nike Machspeed driver. Driver was stolen from my dad, who has a slower swing speed, so Shaft was regular, which causes my spin to be between 3500rpm-4000rpm. 4 wood is stiff flex with same sort of numbers with spin, but nowhere near as bad dispersion. Fitting. The difference will shock you. And to be fair, Michael always highlights this.
With my strong grip and closed setup it makes playing driver very difficult for me to control. Have been considering a 13.5* fairway at 45" to replace the driver lol. I hit my irons and metals brilliant... I think I will have to learn an entirely different technique to control the driver... Will keep at it and focus on effective loft.
Another very good video Micheal, although I feel it's only covered one aspect of why some people find there 3 wood goes further. Surely swing speed would another. I remember reading of you swing less than 90 mph then the 3 wood loft wood assist you in gaining the better trajectory and carry. Although that was done with old tech, my question is... Is it still the same with modern drivers with there low spin, rear weighted heads?
Michael, great video topics! You are offering content that no other does. Keep it up!
I've just picked up some GBB EPIC fairway metals, after last weekend I'll never bother with a driver again 😂
solid 300 yards off a low tee and only missed 2 fairway slightly right, driver is getting sold and never to return
Right
Another interesting vid. Well done and Thanks Mike..
Ive been struggling a lot as I've actually been hitting my 4 iron the same distance as my driver
Same but I don’t have a 3 wood 3 or 4 iron yet so it’s my 5 iron going an easy high flight 200 and my driver going 210.
I hit my 4 iron 280 yards plus roll. But I can hit my 2 iron further
@@kevind4064 hmm 🤔 sure you do lol
@@seansmith373 thank you for your support. Make sure to follow

Thanks Michael for a very instructional video. Sure helps to unserstand such common matters.
Very informative and interesting Michael
That makes sense Mike. More info in my head now. See you soon for next lesson.
Thanks Jamie, look forward to seeing you.
You’re nailing it with the content. So interesting. Please keep them coming. Wind shots next maybe?
This happens to me, I hit my 3 wood 50 yards further than driver
This is glorious, I have been researching "how far should you hit a 7 iron?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Reyuhaffad Underlying Recognition - (just google it ) ? It is an awesome exclusive guide for discovering how to revealing an effortless golf swing technique without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my buddy got great results with it. +ua-cam.com/channels/wKjnHdSC4SiZOPpCji-cBw.html
Try a higher degree and a stiffer shaft if it's too flexible
Love your videos Michael! You do a great job. I would love to see you have some more fun and bring in someone to compete with in your videos or help a student with a great personality.
Thanks Ted
So if I hit down with the driver would increasing the loft help with distance?
If the static loft of the 3 wood is 15 degrees, and you hit down on the golf ball at -3.2 degrees, shouldn't the dynamic loft delivered to the golf ball be 15 - 3.2 = 11.8 degrees?
I went for a driver fitting and ended up changing my AOA during the session and walked out 30 yards longer with the same driver I went in with taken down 1deg. I went from -2 to +4 and it also takes a lot of spin off.
Yes yes yes 👍
I've never hit driver well but hit every other club solid :s I play through the air, hitting the ball high and far but cant workout how to hit driver! after watching this i'll tee it up a bit and try and hit more up on it and see if that makes a difference.
Great review Michael! I play with the same Subzero driver at 9 deg. (Diff shaft , I use the Aldila Rouge Max 65 gram stiff). My clubhead speed is 104-108 mph. Should’ve got more of a custom fit with Aldila’s other Rouge shafts, but The local PGA superstore here in New Jersey didn’t have the other shafts to compare. I did compare the Rouge Max (mid spin/mid launch) to the Fujikura Pro 65 and Rogue Max had a much better feel.
I notice not many players use the Subzero fairway metals. I have the 3 and 5 and love them , especially the 5 metal.
Why did you choose the standard Epic 3 metal fairway ?
I hate my driver:(( can hit my 3wood 190 210M depending but driver just a massive 150m slice right:(
More loft and lower kick point shaft.. will get gove that ball some elevatiom
Very interesting
Mike I hit driver like u did here but maybe 5 down!! How do i improve this I've been to a coach but really struggle to hit up??
Craig Talbot keep your head and sternum behind ball 👍
Steve B cheers mate I will have a go at that!!
Right shoulder tilt at address.
Michael / I have now stopped carrying a driver as my Epic 3 wood goes further AND straighter - ‘drives’ me nuts
Isn’t the cure for this is to hit up with the driver. The reason someone hits the 3 wood further than the driver is they don’t hit the driver correctly. So cure is to improve driver technique, not use the 3 wood.
Yes 100% Wayne.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Enjoy your videos always find them informative.
100%
Wayne could you explain why players who do hit down on their driver, still hit it further than their 3-W?
Look more into Joaquin Niemann and less Bryson. The dude is small and was driving over or around the 300 all day, he has a much more penetrating ball flight that’s what most of us need and get out of the tee it high let it fly mentality. Unless you’re putting in the work also with weight training like Bryson. Maybe like a Jon rahm. He almost looks like he’s hitting punches off the tee and a more penetrating ball flight also. No need to hit the driver 250 if you get no roll out. I’m the same way so I know that’s what people think
How do you have 160mph ball speed and a total distance of 276 yards? Seems like it should be much closer to 300.
The video explains it. the Angle of Attack is negative instead of positive making the launch conditions less than ideal.
Please do a video on how to hit up with a driver without hooking. I can’t hit it straight if I get up on it. 😬
sounds like your closing the face at impact
Michael Newton Golf you bet!
I find it hard to not
In 14 I hit my driver 200 I hit my 3 wood 240-250
Many are doing this because they’re teeing the ball up high with driver and hitting it way too high. Think about the flight with your woods I bet they’re dramatically lower then the driver. Tee the ball lower and stop tilting so much up. There’s only one Bryson, Rory, dj, and brooks. A lot of you are thinking of their numbers. But if you watched the masters and tigers group they were hitting driver about 275 which is way more attainable. I’m not knocking anyone but you can’t be those guys and only play golf. I mean think about it, I bet Bryson benches 405 and squats probably 500 lbs. most of you are looking at the wrong golfers
So the biggest thing that kills me here is what I guess is D plane. Looking at the delivery numbers, especially with the 3 wood... if you are hitting down 3.2 on a 15 degree club, how does that equate to a 21.6 degree delivered loft? How does that give you a 10 degree ball launch? Golf math is hard.
I struck it slightly low in the face which makes the ball launch slightly lower
Ok, what would be a 'normal' set of numbers there... understanding these angles is crazy difficult for me. (edit) also, thanks for replying! pretty cool!
Spin affects launch angle. High spin lifts the ball at the expense of energy pushing it forward. More energy is put on a angle (down) at delivery causing the spin and angle change.
You can lower the spin by hitting up on the ball with a driver that has a lower face angle. (the lower degree driver is key) If you can't stop hitting down then you have to use a higher angle club that increases spin to compensate for the poorer swing, because if you don't get enough height you lose distance too.
The driver is designed to compensate for a poor swing to optimize performance. Spins the ball more near the bottom thanks to grooves and low spin towards the center/top because it's automatically going to get more loft when you hit center/above center.
It doesn't go as far, it never has and never will.
If your 3 wood goes as far as your driver, you dont know how to hit a driver.
I hit my 3w 280-290yards -- driver not much further ... I need help !!!
Are you inside a freezer
Will a driver with too long of shaft for my swing speed slow your distance down? I have a 46 inch 9.5 and my 3 Wood goes just as far
