3 WOOD SHAFT IN DRIVER.......DOES IT WORK?

  • What happens when you put a 3 wood shaft into a driver?
    Well in this video we take a shaft directly out of a Stealth Plus 3 Wood and put it straight into a Stealth Plus driver....
    We then discuss and test how the shaft plays, how it affects flex, swingweight, club delivery, swing speed, ball speed, launch and spin.
    We test both the standard length driver shaft and the standard length 3 wood shaft.
    As always a very in depth look into whether a 3 wood shaft in a driver actually works.

    Just put a 3 wood TM shaft in my M2 head. Fabulous, no loss of distance, in fact a substantial gain down the fairways. Less draw and more accurate. Love it.

      Cut down an extra driver shaft from 45’ to 44’ on my cobra SZ driver. First time playing with it, hit 11 fairways. Just had that confident feel and allowed me to go for it.
      Much tighter dispersion hence more fairway. Oh, no loss of distance. None.
      Go for it people.

    One of the most impressive aspect of modern equipment sadly....is the hype and marketing. But with an ounce of knowledge in terms of maths, physics and ballistics the marketing hype can be blown out of the water. When a LM pics up the fundamentals of a ball in flight, it does not know the label/hype behind the club which has just hit it. Absolutely great content in your video once again....

      Good stuff Glenn. Always be open to anything in a fitting, you never know what you might find! But yeah generally I don't see much of an advantage for most amateurs to game the stock length shafts, also I think a stock 3 wood shaft is a little too short, somewhere around 44.5 to 45 seems to be a very good balance for most.

      @@epgolfstudios I agree with this... a 3w length shaft is going to make the lie angle of a driver really flats well, something also to consider. I tried going all the way down to 44.5" and I hit it on the toe A LOT, moved back to 45" and everything squares up nicely. Length, as with anything in golf, is so player dependent... so try everything and go with what works best 🙂

      The problem you will find is most fitters wont have short driver shafts to test. (unless you are going to go 3 wood shaft) and then if you can go short, swing weighting them back to a "normal" might not be an option, will they get the lead tape out? I lay a TM mini Driver, with a driver shaft cut to 43.5 and a midsized grip. I built it myself from ebay parts and use and online calculatro to add tipweights to get the D3 swingweight i like. I would never be able to try that kinda of option with most fitters. Call ahead and see how open your fitter is to shorter shafts and swingweighting on the fly.

    Great video. I'd love to see a comparison between choking down on the driver shaft vs the 3 wood shaft. Because if the difference is negligible then it saves you having to buy a new shaft by just choking down. Plus you'll always have the option of going full length for when a huge bomber attempt is really required.

    Excellent video. Very helpful as I have been thinking of putting a 3 wood shaft into my driver. Playing a mini driver, with which strike and dispersion has been better and wonder whether I would experience similar positive results with a shorter shaft in driver head. My biggest concern would be swing weight. I assume, maybe incorrectly, that simply swapping the changeable weight in the head would fix this.

      Definitely accuracy is always top of the list with driver. Well considering how much shorter it is the amount of weight you would need to add to get the swingweight back to the same as the driver would be crazy. Even if someone was playing a very short shaft I would never recommend adding that much weight to the head. It would be too heavy. Plus because TM won't sell me the weights I don't have adjustable weights for these heads anyway so I would have to use lead tape, and a lot of it! Something I don't really want to do if I'm honest 😂

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  9 місяців тому +1

      Just make sure you go to a good fitting place mate. 43.5 is very short, even for someone under 5'7. You may be fine at 44 or 44.5. but yes when going shorter you do have to be careful. It affects how the shaft plays and obviously swingweight as well. So it can be tricky to get fitted really well at that length. It's very unlikely that they would have shafts that play 43.5, because that is pretty extremely short considering standard drivers are 45.5 or 45.75 nowadays. The best advice I can give you is just to go to the best fitting facility you can with the most options and work with an experienced fitter 👍

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  Рік тому

      Hey Criag. Well you would have to do the opposite mate because the driver head is lighter than a 3 wood head. Therefore the shaft would play stiffer. However if you wanted to get the SW to D3 you would need to add A LOT of weight into the head of the driver which would be a challenge in itself, and then that would also change how the flex of the shaft played depending on how much weight you could add back into the head. If you wanted to get it exactly right you would have to take it to a very experienced club builder to see if / how it could be done. Because you would want to frequency match the shaft really. If you are just taking a guess it will be almost impossible to get the exact same feel as you have in your 3 wood if I'm honest.

      Yes definitely. In fact I rarely fit someone for a standard length driver.
      You have to think about what you are gaining.
      Generally speaking the main benefit of going longer is more club speed. That is why OEMs have been trending longer and longer.
      But say we go an inch shorter we will lose minimal head speed (1 or 2mph) however over the course of a season and hundreds of not thousands of drives having that shorter length will lead to better strikes and more consistency. So that meaningless 1 or 2 mph swing speed gain is not even worth mentioning.

      Hey Jack, the answer to that really comes down to you. If you wanted to get back up around the standard swingweight then you'd need to add around 25-30g which is just an instance amount and would make the head waaayyyyy to heavy. So I wouldn't worry about it needing to be a standard swingweight. Personally I do think a 3w shaft is too small for a driver. I think 44 should be the smallest really. But if you are going with a 3w shaft I would start with adding 10g and see how that goes. Really it's a case of fine tuning the head weight for you. If you're missing left add weight, missing right take off weight

    Interestingly, the lie angle might explain why your shots were more left with the longer shaft... tow up= left. For those us mid-handicappers who are considering this, the important data points are length and dispersion. As you noted when hitting away, a miss with the longer shaft might be OB on narrow courses, and while we all want shorter clubs into greens, we can only make that club choice with balls in play.

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  4 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely right on both points. One thing I will say is lie angle points loft, so on a club like a driver it does have a lot less of an effect than it will on irons and especially wedges. So I think the bigger factor of left shits in this instance would be more down to the substantial length difference and therefore swingweight difference 👍

    How about add a little lead tape or heavier weights.

      Sure you could mess about with lots of variables when changing shaft length.
      The purpose of this video was just to demonstrate what would happen if we just stuck a 3 wood shaft straight into a driver, only as I'm sure millions have done in the past and thousands more will do in the future.
      My videos are already long enough without me tinkering even more 😅😅

    23:32 try to make this fast. Happened to come across a aeroburner TP mini driver 12° on a Ping Tour 75 S shaft. Tried to hit to see what i could do with it. Like every club with a white crown, i can't hit them for some reason. Something about subconsciously may be seeing the blur of white causes to always hit off toe. Sorry. So i decided im going to try to regrip my clubs on my own for the first time. Well, that club was the sac. lamb. When i took the old grip off, I noticed that they had put an extension in it. I didn't know how long they were, nor did I look it up. So, I decided to give club shortening a try. Why not. Took a random guess and pretty much was spot on. It's 41in. My first thoughts when holding looking down, i laughed and thought Jr. set. The next day, i go to a soybean field next door to hit some shag balls to see if i likedchow the grips felt. Decided to hit it. Amazed and this weird feeling at first, i couldn't believe that i felt. I just hammered it. Didn't notice the white blur at all. I was thinking if what i felt was real. 5 more same thing. Then i realized that at the instant that i started my downswing, I could feel exactly where the head was throughout the swing. But the best was being able to feel the exact moment when the head started to make its move , almost like a sling shot move, to catch up with the club and my hands. I've never been fitted but if being fitted means always having that feeling, club fitters are not marketing correctly then. If was guaranteed i could feel that slow-motion kinda Guy Ritchie fight scene. I would camp out to get it done. Its a really neat feeling. Sorry for the novel. Ik i ramble. Hope you guys experience it. Wow. Everytake care. ✌️

      Possibly mate. I generally see 44.5 to 45 being a very nice length in general and for most people 👌

    Doesn't it just depend on how tall the person is. I guess that just meens you needto have the clubs fitted. because nothing comes off the rack in the proper length for someone 5 foot 4 or so.

    What if you put a driver shaft in a 3wood head?

  • @vincenth1030
    @vincenth1030 4 місяці тому

    45.75 STD length for driver is just crazy. I remember when brigestone J33 drivers were considered long at 45".
    Current PGA tour average driver shaft is 44.75, and the LPGA is 45.25.

    A wood shaft is a wood shaft. All shafts are manipulated (cut) at the tip or the grip or a combo of both to achieve the flex, flex point that the player needs. Is your goal to test what happens to the driver if you play a shorter shaft? What is the goal?

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  Місяць тому +1

      Yes you are correct. And a lot of people just whack their 3 wood shaft straight into their driver to see how it plays for them....so I did a test video with in depth numbers about what happens if you do that, thought it was pretty self explanatory 😂

      @@epgolfstudios OK, got it. People can really get helped a great deal with a proper analysis and fitting. I think because the newer generation clubs have the screw on connection, they fashion themselves a club fitter. The older clubs made alterations a major ordeal!

    Stinks that the TaylorMade PX RDX Red fairway is a one off; if you look near the bottom there's no Hextow symbol.
    They didn't do a one-off for their driver shaft. The TaylorMade one off is limp like a noodle compared to the same flex in the standard line.
    Maybe redo video with more comparable shafts?

  • @vincenth1030
    @vincenth1030 4 місяці тому

    The answer is cut the driver shaft to around 44 to 45 inch. And adjust to d2-d3.
