    I REALLY enjoy your videos! You are very transparent and that is the primary reason I like watching your videos. The other thing I like is you are like my high school shop teacher! I have learned so much from your videos. I am getting as much knowledge as I can BEFORE I tear into a boat project I inherited that is presently sitting in the driveway. Thanks for sharing all your hard work and the knowledge you have accumulated in the process of fixing/repairing and updating your boat projects. I hope your mom is doing better.

    I used your idea on the drain but I used a 1/2 pvc drilling small holes to allow water to enter and bottom side of pvc I drilled and screwed in 2 brass nipples attached small tubing for drain it worked perfectly I would’ve never even thought about this if I had not seen you video also I cut the old style dock styrofoam to put in each void very happy with the finished work

    Very nice. I restored a 30 ft Chaparral Villain with twins. took me 4 years, had to do the same thing. New transom, stringers etc. I spent a lot of time with the guys at west systems epoxies for the job. Know what you went through brother. nice job.

    Great video, brings back memories when I built a boat (Glen-L Thunderbolt with Merc V8) 20 years ago. I think the big problem with these commercial boats rotting out is the false floor. My boat was open, the seats and stuff was mounted directly to the stringers and the floor was actually the bottom of the boat. I know this wouldn't fly on a commercial boat but that false bottom prevents things from drying out causing or greatly speeding up rot. And of course without a false bottom it's much easier to monitor and repair. Gotta be honest I think a rebuild like this is probably just as much work as building from scratch. 10 gallons of resin seems like a LOT.
    Cheers

    Amazing JOB YOUR DOING ON THE REPAIR, last video I saw was you were finding wet foam guess when you took it apart the whole dam thing needed repair, Your learning a lot about fiberglass repair. Do you want to make the gas tank accessible? You probably know this already but I ,learned the hard way about not having a fuel/ water separator installed in my fuel line. Without that you can suck any crap right into the engine!

    You can put resin on bottom side (haul) and on vertical (stringer) and just glue fiberglass strip. Kinda making a fiberglass hammock. The middle part of fiberglass must be free of resin. It will be like a "fiberglass filter". When you put foam later foam will be stopped by fiberglass mesh. The corner will be empty and if water ever gets in foam it will drain through fiberglass and after to weeping hole. You can create a "web" from this "hammocks". Also fiberglass will not rot like cardboard.

    I bought a 1979 Sea Ray, I probably will have to do the same repair, but I choose to enjoy the boat for what it is and not get so depressed about it. You choose to tackle this expensive project on top of what you spent on the boat. I only buy off of ebay which has buyer protection. I only spent $1800 for the boat and plan on making it a $10,000 classic boat when its done. Sorry for your bad luck but "Buyer Beware"....did you have the boat inspected? ... Its 2018 hope you Mom is in a good place wherever she is now. Blessings.

    would it be reasonable to just float it in the lake for a while to see if she is Taking on Water?

  • @ruwithlee1970

    As far as your cardboard tube Idea in theory it's a good Idea,but paper rots! How about
    PVC pipe with holes wraped in a black membrane material covered in Expandi foam to prevent sanding water in the sub floor ?

  • @mogollon29
    @mogollon29 5 років тому

    Hooe all is well! Quick question, where did you purchase your fiberglass for the stringers?

  • @richwilson1837
    @richwilson1837 4 роки тому

    So I see this is done and has been done for some time but a better method for those drains would be a PVC pipe layed in there with holes in it. No way the foam would expand that much to fill the tube. Face the holes down and water will push into it if it gets any significant amount in it to drain as you’re going for. Otherwise I’m not sure I’d use the expanding foam in a boat since it’ll hold water against its edge and basically shove it against your fiberglass covered plywood.

  • @cheryldenise36
    @cheryldenise36 13 років тому

    Maybe this is a really stupid thought, since I have never done this before.... but... how would it work to use 1/4 in pvc pipe with multiple holes drilled in it and run it parallel to the stringers down to the drain holes (rather than cardboard tubes or balloons). Would that work or would it only be allowing a backflow of water into the other compartments and foam?

  • @Beachnative42

    I found that PL glue and polyester resin don't like each other. The PL will stay liquid and uncured when exposed to the resin. Best to not use PL at all in a fiberglass project.

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage
      @FriscoBoatersGarage  5 років тому

      You have to let the PL glue totally cure for 7 days. I mentioned this in several videos.

      @@FriscoBoatersGarage Somehow I watched all those videos and missed that. But I didn't have a time schedule to wait that long anyway. I made do with various peanut butter mixes instead. Between cabosil, q-cells, and milled glass fibers, I got it all done. 17' Sunbird with black mush decks. Now stronger than when new. After having a Sea Ray before this one, it was real obvious to see the quality Sea Ray puts in their boats compared to some of the brands OMC took over before they all came crashing down.

    Ok, I know i'm slow. But how in the heck can water get down in there if you fiberglass and gel the deck? Do you have to leave the channels for water drainage if the deck is sealed tight to keep water out? How does water get in there? Please explain. I just re-decked and foamed my bonito and did NOT leave those channels! Have I royally screwed it up?

    It's Probably to late but the way I did it is after I put the deck on I drilled 3" holes over each cel put the boat bow down all the way sitting on the tongue and poured the foam through the holes and let it climb up and out the the holes I drilled work perfect

    Polyester is brittle, epoxy is flexible. Broken hulls are normal for us raceboaters. Epoxy resin is the only way to repair fiberglass on boats or Corvettes. Tons of experience doing both taught me to use epoxy, period. Work it down before it totally cures while still soft, or else!

  • @beebop7552
    @beebop7552 9 років тому +3

    Adding flour to resin is creating a biodegradable compound with an unknown point of degradation. Thats what is done to the plastic in grocery sacks which biodegrade in the environment. Plus the wheat grains have no strength and will tend to reduce the expected strength of the epoxy resin.

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage
      @FriscoBoatersGarage  9 років тому +1

      bee bop All it is used for is to thicken the resin not for strength. The fibers are for strength. Not sure where you got this information.

    Im fairly certain I would have quietly found that dude that sold you that boat , and classed him into the hull . ! What a jerk ! Who does that to people ? I once bought a boat from a guy , I still have it .the guy took me out on the lake it ran fine ,it's a 1957 magicglass vixon .. it was all original and all the trim bells and whistles were intact ..it was a beautiful little all original survivor ..I was pretty thrilled ..I paid the man , and told him I would be back to get it on the weekend ..wen I returned the boat was completely stripped to tell bare hull , no chrome ,no engine no seats no trailer it was just laying on the ground , and the guy and his family were gone ..an empty house and yard other than my now pathetic antique boat hull 😤 it took 10 years to locate all of the original components to put it back together , while I was spending every spare moment putting my boat together I found out there were only a handful of them registered in the United states.. so it's a rare little boat ..the manufacturer went out of business after 6 years .. but I impathize with you , I hope your project works out for you mine was definitely a love project and not one for making money for sure.

    Mate first of all sorry to hear about your mother. I’m not a family member so I really don’t need to know your mother’s personal problems I do sympathies with her but that’s not why I started to follow this thread. I have a couple of generations of boat builders in my family and have never heard of using flour but if that’s your choice you’re keeping it interesting as for marine grade sealants sika is a very reputable company that has sales reps that can talk you thru just about any application. You said about containers my brother uses plastic ice cream containers you can buy them in bulk and there inexpensive. From the pictures you’re posting it looks like you are doing a good job and have all the gear a good 3m dust mask is a must for fibre glass work,and some white zip up hooded throwaway coveralls stops skin irritations, so head Dow look forward to hearing more about your boat saga.

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage
      @FriscoBoatersGarage  6 років тому

      Bailey DenBak you don’t want the wood in direct contact with the hull. You fill it with thickens resin and then glass it.

    • @baileydenbak7237
