Mark Neveldine is directing this film. He is one of the halves of the Neveldine/Taylor team that directed the Crank films, Gamer, and Ghost Rider 2. I think this is his first film without Taylor, who is also working solo on a film adaptation of the Twisted Metal video game series for Sony. I noticed the visual style from their other films together in this trailer, but I don't think it really elevates the material.
Djimon Hounsou coming out in Vatican Tapes, Fast 7, and I heard he is coming out in that King Arthur movie good to see that Chris Pratt aint the only one getting some love out there
Djimon Hounsou is a bad ass. i really liked him as Papa Midnite in Constantine and liked him in Blood Diamonds and other films Id like to see him be cast as Martian Manhunter... he's got that voice that reminds me of Martian Manhunter from the Justice League animated series.
Well, in Northern Europe, particularly here in Scandinavia, religion is not very popular, in fact there are a lot of people who are unapologetically anti-religious, but I think the church is more significant in Southern Europe.
Hey Grace! I'm not trolling now but just by reading the title I thought this film was going to be about unraveling the child abuse done by priests of the catholic church. Even the first headline "For 2000 years the Vatican has recorded evidence of evil" made me think it would head in that direction, which would make for a more interesting film in my opinion. Huge fan of Michael Pena though and it would be nice to see Djimon Hounsou in a decent film. Nonetheless, keep up the great work. Best regards from Sweden :)
The diversity in this movie was good had a little of every race. Had White, Hispanic, and Black which will bring Black, Hispanic, and Whites to see this movie ;)
Grace , The Exorcist never was a blockbuster , but close . Not a horror movie either , it's a theology thriller but is '' considered '' a horror movie it's true . Jaws was the first blockbuster in the movie industry .
when i saw that shot of her at the top of the house surrounded by fire all i could think of is Let it Go Let it Go because she kinda looks like Elsa doesn't she lol
Thank goodness I watched the movie before the trailer lol I wouldn't have been as satisfied with the movie if I'd seen everything that was gonna happen. (Trailer)
The diversity is great, but it turned out to be another white-good-girl-being-possesed film. The only film of that type that really scares me is The Exorcism of Emily Rose that still creeps me out
In Europe, certainly in Northern Europe, religion has become a private matter; not something you talk about often or share your thoughts about. People don't really tend to spend to much time on the subject either. As a consequence, religion has become part of the European cultural tradition/heritage and is not part of our daily lives.
I watched Shooter the other day. Michael Pena was great in that. I think this might not do well because it's so derivative and Michael Pena's career might take a hit because of it. Fortunately he does have a bunch of other films in production at the moment that might make up for it.
I agree with your review. It sparked my interest at first, but it rapidly defaulted to generic horror/exorcism stuff. I don't see myself going to the cinema for this one.
This seems interesting and I do love the casting. I didn't think they made these movies anymore. I tire of horror easily because it get cheese so fast. I mean what the heck waa Ouija...blagh. just garbage. This one seems interesting and doeant seem cheesy. I like movies that deal with antichrist, vatican, exorcism...all can be interesting if done right.
I really liked this movie however, i wouldnt have named it Vatican Tapes because this would suggest that the film be about the secrets of the Vatican and all the stories that are not allowed to be told. But if i take the sole argument of the film, i think it adds something original and new in comparison with the rest of the exorcism movies. This movie provides you with the idea of the antichrist and his plan and how the plan will be set into motion. See what i mean? This is way more interesting than a just a plain possession flick, it has more depth to it. The best part is that the whole thing gets you thinking, okay now what is happening in our world. Is there already an antichrist mimicking Jesus Christ? At least this is my opinion of a point that was harshly criticized ... duh another exoricism ...
This trailer actually annoyed me because it fell into the usual tactic of using jump scares and repetitive music to make it seem more intense. I fast forwarded it halfway through because it became white noise to me. Cinema Sins Jeremy and Chris Stuckman have some great videos of what the Horror genre needs to do to get itself out of this rut of movies that seem to be the same style. I personally think the genre needs to take a year off from releases, put all the directors and studio heads in a room and have them review what makes their movies all seem cliche and annoying. Find a way to make horror scary and interesting again. Find some depth in them, again.
This was/is generic horror film fodder. How many times does the devil need to try and initiate the second coming through some random girl in a small town with the only thing standing before them is the Catholic church? It's over done and it's sad to see Michael Pena in this. Was this a paycheck film for him?
I don't know about this movie. But I agree with you Grace there are too many exorcist films. There has not been a good one.Like I said in the insidious comments yesterday there have been no good horror movie period. But I do like that minorities are the stars of this one. Being that this comes out in the summer, it might be shut out of the box office. Lets hope that this is a good exorcist movie.
I would love to see the Exorcist remade but they would probably make the little girl older which would suck. I cant imagine them having a little girl saying and doing the things Linda Blair was saying & doing back then in todays environment. They are so pc sometimes. I doubt they would have a 10 or 11 yr old screaming obscenitieis etc... and I really don't want to watch a watered down version of the Exorcist.
No, man. The Exorcist (1973) is a classic. It is what they've tried to imitate a thousand times over the last 40+ years. Why remake such an iconic film? They would just fuck it up. It'd be like remaking The Godfather.
Well, these type of cheap movies is precisely where more diversity should happen. I disagree with your "diversity" obsession, but if there is one area where it could be helpful would be these types of movies. Actors have to start somewhere and the low budget movies (and horror movies in particular) seem to be all white casts most of the time. Black males are already over represented in big budget movies (even Chris Rock says there's always a black guy in there). But these smaller films would be a great place for up and coming Asian and other less "represented" minority actors, for example.
Skyebright1 Ha! Yeah, that's true but they probably both got hundreds of thousands of dollars for a few days of work, so I am not exactly feeling sorry for them. The roles are more than likely just slightly extended cameos so that the filmmakers could put them in the posters and trailers.
I agree, and I'm a black women. When people say diversity, they really mean putting in a 'token black guy'. Even in commercials there are token black guys. I see them way more than I see black women or any other minority in general and that's why I don't support those movies. There needs to be more diversity.
katelynn767 Well, I do think that black women are really getting the worst of it (if one cares about having a rough approximation of the population). They can't even get the black guy's girlfriend roles any more as they seem to strictly go to very (very!) light-skinned black women or another race altogether. Even the iconic black women roles such as Uhuru of Star Trek and Storm from X-Files go to women who are (just about) just slightly tanned women who may or may not be black. One practically needs to know their family tree to know if they are black or not. As far as you not supporting these movies, I don't really know what that means. You don't go to many movies, I guess. As far as "diversity" goes, I think you are going to continue to be disappointed in the near future. International audiences are becoming such a huge part of the box office that I am afraid there will be fewer black people as time goes on. With Russia and especially China becoming big business for Hollywood, their incentive for more black people is dropping even as we speak. More Asian (particularly Chinese) actors will assuredly be in the cards, but that will be the most noticeable change.
Meh, this just looks bad. Standard exorcism tropes. I would prefer to see a young man possesed, and when he is he is not turned into an arrgesive brute, but rather him just be a victem. This trailer did not captivate me.

No love for the horror genre I see hahaha
Skyebright1 well yeah most horror movies are the same thing these days its all about finding that diamond in the shit
Djimon Hounsou is a bad ass. i really liked him as Papa Midnite in Constantine and liked him in Blood Diamonds and other films
Id like to see him be cast as Martian Manhunter... he's got that voice that reminds me of Martian Manhunter from the Justice League animated series.
I can name 15 movies who looks exactly the same.
Now I just want a "This Present Darkness" movie.
Well, in Northern Europe, particularly here in Scandinavia, religion is not very popular, in fact there are a lot of people who are unapologetically anti-religious, but I think the church is more significant in Southern Europe.

That title, man... I was expecting this investigation movie with something else on those tapes. Now that would be a controversial movie to make, Sony!
The diversity in this movie was good had a little of every race. Had White, Hispanic, and Black which will bring Black, Hispanic, and Whites to see this movie ;)

Please review the trailer for Before I Wake! (:
Thank goodness I watched the movie before the trailer lol I wouldn't have been as satisfied with the movie if I'd seen everything that was gonna happen. (Trailer)
should I buy this movie!?
All I kept looking at was that hair.....
The diversity is great, but it turned out to be another white-good-girl-being-possesed film. The only film of that type that really scares me is The Exorcism of Emily Rose that still creeps me out
Have you not seen the original Exorcist with Linda Blair? That's the scariest film of all time.
Why is there never guys that get possessed. Why has it got to be a creepy girl in crappy PJs?

B00! AHH ! - Superman's nemesis Bizarro is Starring in this Vatican Tapes Movie
How do you like that, "ultimate batle, good vs. evil" good - is man evil - is woman. Accirding to this movie
The Messiah has already returned. Fear not the propaganda of the demons of Hollywood.
I agree with your review. It sparked my interest at first, but it rapidly defaulted to generic horror/exorcism stuff. I don't see myself going to the cinema for this one.
When she dislocated her arm that's disgusting.
I really hope the never try to remake "The Exorcist" I fell classics do not need to be remade!
Im currently living in Europe and was kinda surprised by the amount of atheism here compared to US
I hope it was a positive surprise for you :)

secularism is rife in the UK

Looks like a poor Exorcist / Omen retread, with the tired modern day jump scares thrown in lieu of storytelling. Agree the cast looks good though.

Great cast, but this looks like a made for TV movie the more the trailer goes on. Personally I will skip it, I am super picky about horror films.
This looks terrible. I'm sick of possession/Devil horror films. They are all the same.
I don't know about this movie. But I agree with you Grace there are too many exorcist films. Horrible subtitles!!!
Ugh... Another exorcism movie...
How to counteract the diversity in your movie? Make one of them a basic white girl. Just looking at her at her birthday party annoyed me

I don't think the African is American.
Your movie/trailer reviews seem to just be based on how the movie aids the liberal agenda, not the merits of the movie.
Meh, this just looks bad.
