    Fun fact: If it hasn’t already been mentioned, just got to the part where you two see Eowyn pick up Merry and ride with the Rohirrim to Gondor. Most of the horse riders in Lotr are actually women as there aren’t too many professional male horse riders in New Zealand in comparison to the women riders, so in the Rohirrim, majority of the “male” riders are actually women in beards

    There is legit an answer for everything in Tolkien. It's that deep and detailed. To wit: Gandalf's light isn't just sunlight--it's The Light, the "secret flame," as he says in Fellowship, of Illuvatar, the god/creator of Tolkien's universe. Gandalf is pretty much the equivalent of an angel in that universe.

    There are people who complain that in LOTR, Wizards don't seem to do that many impressive magic feats. But Tolkien's idea is that these emissars from the western spirits would only guide and counsel men and elves to fight themselves against evil. Gandalf only really uses magic when fighting agains other supernatural entities, and usually is in the form of light, a kind of spiritual power opposed to throwing flames and calling storms like Saruman. It is also revealed in the books that Gandalf's greatest power was actually to inspire and give courage to people, enhanced by one of the three elven rings told of at the beginning of the story, which he received when arriving to Middle Earth in the grey havens from one of the oldest elves alive, Cirdan. Galadriel and Elrond have the other two. This is not a spoiler because it's never shown in the films.

      What I don't understand is if Sauron had the master ring, why didn't that control all the ring wearers, not just the humans? Why weren't the dwarves and elves corrupted and dominated as well? Plus, does the mere existence of the master ring mean the other ring wearers are susceptible to corruption, such that simply wearing them as Gandalf et al do puts them at risk? Since Sauron made all the rings, they should all be corrupted to an extent, seems to me.

    • @Smoug
      @Smoug 3 роки тому +12

      @@Aeroldoth3 The thing is that the 3 elven rings were not made by Sauron, they were made at the same time but without the participation of Anatar, the lord of gifts as Sauron called himself back then. Some elves already doubted of his real nature and identity. If I remember correctly, still the rings could not be used when Sauron was wearing the one ring, but as long as he continued to be without it and without physical form, Galadriel and the others could use the three rings for their original purpose, the preservation of life, the enhancement of craft and beauty, and the protection of their realms. As for dwarves they are kinda neutral beings very connected to the earth. They are not particularly of the light but they are not easily taken by the shadow. They quickly realized the deceit and mostly took off the rings. Only the kings of men let themselves be corrupted by them.

    • @Aeroldoth3
      @Aeroldoth3 3 роки тому

      @@Smoug I read the books decades ago, but IIRC the movies say in the beginning that Sauron forged the rings, meaning they should have all been bad to some extent. Even if the other rings were "safe" and the master ring was just using backdoor admin privileges to control them, I'd still think there'd be danger... especially to Gandalf going up against Sauron.
      Just seems like an unnecessary risk. "Well, Sauron is only 16% restored, so I'll keep wearing this ring until he's at 49%."

    • @Smoug
      @Smoug 3 роки тому +3

      @@Aeroldoth3 The thing is the rings were made with the craft Sauron thought the elves at Eregion, but the three rings were made without his knowledge, after he was gone. So they were never tuched or tainted by him. They couldnt be worn while Sauron was wearing the ring, but all the time it was lost, the three elven rings were used. Of course only high elves or maiars like Gandalf could have handled it.
      Also, when the one ring was destroyed the elven ones lost their power and thats why Galadriel and Elrond had to leave, unable to preserve the elven realms anymore.

    When Eldrond gives Aragorn the reforged sword, Anduril, they both spoke to each other in Elvish.
    "Onen i-estel edain, u-chebin estel anim", was what was said.
    When Aragorn was only two years old, he moved to Rivendell to live with the Elves, including Elrond. There he was renamed Estel, which is Elvish for "Hope". Denethor was actually a decent Steward in the books. He made sure the people who couldn't fight were safe and he lit the beacons. He wore armour under his robes and carried a sword, always ready to fight Mordor. However he used a palantir (a seeing-stone like the one Saruman had) to probe Sauron's strength and ended up in a battle of wills with the enemy. Sauron couldn't make the stone lie but he could show Denethor what he wanted him to see. The Steward lost hope and went mad. He was a strong man but not strong enough to fight Sauron's spirit for as long as he did and not suffer any consequences. A couple of Denethor's lines in the movies make allusions to that but you will only catch that if you have read the books. One is when he says there is no victory against the power that has risen in the East and one about the eyes of the White Tower not being blind.

    I wish more people saw the scene about "Merry and the war" the same way I do. In my eyes, it's a lot deeper than "hobbit small, no fight". It reflects what Tolkien was writing about in a sense. The horror's of war and why would anyone knowingly want to join such a travesty. I think the best example is when the character around the fire (can't remember the name) says that if Merry (and anyone in that matter) were to turn around and run away that would be the WISEST decision he would make. I don't think it was meant as an insult or even a slight on his physical stature. I think it was a seasoned soldier commenting on how no one should look forward to or want to be in a war. Although Tolkien did not like allegories being tied to his work, it is hard not to see his opinions and feeling on his time during the first world war and how it was an inspiration for a lot of the book.

    "What is it about seeing someone that you can't see?"
    It's the psychological fear of the unknown. Humans rely very heavily on their eyesight, so when we can't see something, especially if we know it's out there and it can see us, that's terrifying in a very instinctive, primal, predator vs. Prey sort of way. It's why any good horror movie writer knows to play with other senses before letting you see the monster. You hear footsteps or feel vibrations. There are strange noises, or a twig snaps, or someone goes "What's that smell?" And then when the creature is revealed, 9 times out of 10, it's less scary once we see it. Because when we don't know what it looks like, out brains fill in the blanks with whatever is the scariest thing possible for each of us on a personal level.

      @@Freshboii_tru Not quite. The Folk of the Mountains had sworn a solemn oath of allegiance to aid Gondor in time of war. An oath of that sort, between nations and kings, was viewed as being more than a mere ‘promise’ - it was a sacred thing. There were few viler things you could call a man than ‘oathbreaker’, because such a man could not be trusted in any way, had no honor, and was a coward to boot.
      It’s also important to remember that Isildur’s curse is the curse of a king, and a king bearing the Ring at that. Curses, oaths, and such things from the mouth of a king have far greater power in Middle-Earth (and the sagas and folk beliefs that influenced it) than in reality.

    I always thought it was an interesting artistic choice to make the wargs look like hyenas. They're definitely described as more wolf-like in the books. But I don't hate the hyena look. I think they look scarier and more feral as hyenas.
    Little background info on them. They aren't just animals. They are sentient creatures with their own language and culture, but they are pretty darn evil and have an alliance with the orcs/goblins, so when their goals align, they allow them to ride them into battle.

      I love these movies, but the wargs where maybe my biggest problem with them. Big wolves would have been scary enough! Tolkien drew so much inspiration from norse mythology, and "varg" is actually the sweedish word for wolf. And when we already have the evil men from the evil east comming to destroy the good west with their giant elephants, I don't see why they would wanna give the orcs African animals to ride as well. That's the ONE THING the bad Hobbit movies did better.

    •So as Pippin is now a Guard of the Citadel of Gondor, Merry is now a Squire of Rohan. A squire is someone in training to be a knight.
    •I like to think what Gandalf summoned with his staff was a sort of divine light, similar to the rising sunlight at Helms Deep.
    •Lord Denethor is a man suffering from grief, who takes out his anger on his living son.
    •Kissing the ring of one's lord/master is an old medieval custom. It's a formal submission or pledge of allegiance to the one wearing the ring. It is also done when greeting a cardinal or the Pope.
    •This is more an homage to the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade and the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. "Half a league, half a league, half a league onward. All in the valley of death rode the six hundred. ... Theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die."
    •Dunharrow is a refuge for the Rohirrim and a fortified position. The Dimholt is the forest along the Paths of the Dead.
    •There's training to fight and then there's the experience of actually fighting a battle. Everyone is green until their first battle, where they see the true horrors of war.
    •Lord Elrond refers to the Army of the Dead or Oathbreakers. During the War of the Last Alliance, the Men of the White Mountains pledged their allegiance to Isildur that they would fight with him. But when Gondor's need was dire, they fled deep into the mountains. So Isildur cursed them never to rest until they had fulfilled their pledge. Now, they are restless spirits.
    •There are a number of women who have dressed as men so that they could fight for their countries. Mulan happens to be a very famous example. Also, I believe some of the extras playing riders were local women with fake beards. They put a call out for anyone who could ride a horse and got about 300 people, both men and women.
    •It's a warg, which like in the last film resembles a hyena. In the book and The Hobbit trilogy, wargs resemble large wolves.
    •That's the idea - launch the heads of the failed charge over and scar the city into surrendering.
    •So clearly Gandalf is the better commander of this situation. He will lead Gondor's forces until Aragorn's return.
    •He moved at the very last possible moment like a boss.
    •Still in Isengard. Their involved in the war ended there.
    •So that is Grond, a massive battering ram Sauron built special for the gates of Minas Tirith, and the creatures pulling it are called the Great Beasts or Great Siege Beasts. They sort of look like rhinos.

  • @fullcomicalchemist2195

    Another awesome reaction guys. The War Of The Ring is happening everywhere so the battle on The Pelennor Fields is just one small part of the conflict. There is a whole army of Easterlings and legions of Orcs all up North fighting the Dwarves of Erebor and the men of Dale. Dol Guldur is a base of operations which most of the Nazgul were stationed and they are fighting Galadriel and Legolas's people of Mirkwood, I believe the orcs of Moria were also involved in this conflict. You will understand it a little more when you see The Hobbit these lands are all at war. Sauron had forces everywhere and the Corsairs who sail are descended from Numenor like Aragorn The Dunedin, The men of Arnor and of Gondor. They are called the black Numenorians who followed Sauron when he seen to the fall of Numenor by destroying it from within. That's why Elrond told Aragorn there wasn't enough men it's why people had to stand Sauron could win without ever having the ring, one thing he didn't account for was the courage of small people with big hearts.

If I remember correctly then Umbar has three basic sets of ancestry the original people of Umbar, the black Numenorians who would become the Corsairs and yes the rebels from the kin strife. The one group of men that fought for Sauron that were left out of the films entirely were the Variags, I think it was because of their scant appearance and description in the books. I think they were asian looking in appearance and the Corsairs in the film do have a lot of Asian pirate influence in their design, I believe this was a nod to that particular group. I myself always like to think the armoured Easterlings we see in Two Towers are going through Mordor, in order to meet up with the rest of the army being sent North to Erebor.

I would think it a little odd for them to make such a substantial arid detour from a more direct route to Erebor to enter Mordor via the Black gate. Maybe they needed extra provisions or instruction beyond what Sauron's emissaries in the East could relay to them.

And he is greater in the books in some ways than he is in the movies (he also knows about the One Ring and never intended to bring it to his father). There is a reference to this in the movies, however, when Denethor derisively called Faramir a "Wizard's pupil". The person he is, aside from his DNA, was the doing of Gandalf, not Denethor.

    In the books, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are a recognized group of close, loyal friends, and are collectively called The Hunters because of how they hunted down the group of Uruks and Orcs who had taken Merry and Pippin captive. And Aragorn was a friend to many and would become such a looming figure, so within that group, Legolas and Gimli became an even closer pair.

    In the books Denethor is a much more complex character, he has a palantir like Sarumans but Sauron can't take his mind so he slowly drives him into despair and depression which is why he gives up when Faramir falls, but in the books he's much more involved with the defence of the city including ordering the beacons to be lit.

    So I have watched your LOTR reactions now and let me say one thing at the very beginning:
    I am a huge LOTR fan ever since the movies came out almost 20 years ago (I actaully read the books afterwards :D ) and I started to watch numerous UA-cam reactions to the trilogy in the past months, at least two dozens in total. Some of them were just mediocre, some were pretty decent, some were really good and very few were absolutely great. However, I still had to find a reaction I consider to be "near perfect" to date, but you guys totally nailed that! :) Everything from being funny, wholesome, authentic, energetic, really interested in the story and having a genuine feeling for the characters and themes was spot on! :)
    Relly looking forward for your next reactions and keep up the awesome work! :)

    I cry every time King Aragorn on the day of his coronation says in front of everyone to the hobbits “oh my friends, you bow to no one.” And then the fucking King bows to the smallest and weakest creatures of Middle Earth because they saved it. Then everyone bows. TEARS FLOWING EVERY TIME.
    Aragorn is the prime example of healthy masculinity. He is humble, full of love for others, empathetic, compassionate, fierce, a warrior, loyal, defender and protector of the weak, gentleman, unafraid to show emotion and affection openly (such as kissing Boromir on the forehead and hugging the Elf warrior at Helm’s Deep), honest and a strong supporter of women as equals. He is literally what men need to aspire to. We need more Aragorns in the world.
