If it is comforting to you, Sam was, after a long life as mayor of Hobbiton, eventually invited to Aman (The Undying Land) and reunited with Frodo there after Rosie passed away decades later. Legolas and Gimli also moved there after some time. Legolas would not accept going if his good friend Gimli wasn't allowed to join him. In this, Gimli was the only dwarf to ever see Aman. Merry and Pippin lived long influential lives in Hobbiton, and when they died, they were laid to rest next to Aragorn in Minas Tirith. :)

@Hautterrien Because she chose to become mortal, and the fate of men is to leave the world and to go "somewhere else" (the Great Beyond). When she died she reunited with Aragorn in the other world. At last Frodo, Bilbo and Sam died too, but like Aragorn did, according to their own desire.
Tolkien was a believer, and in his world death is seen (by immortals like Elves) as a "gift" to escape from the endless wheel of time that Elves, on the contrary, can't escape from and that wears them down.

    • @Laurelin70
      @Laurelin70 Рік тому +9

@Hautterrien It's not written in the book, but in the letters and you can guess it from the Silmarillion, where it is said that death is the "gift" (by Elves' pov) of Eru to Men and that not even the Valar can change that.

    • @Laurelin70
      @Laurelin70 Рік тому +12

@Hautterrien Earendil was not a Man: he was the son of Tuor (a Man) and Idril (an elf-woman), so he was a half-elf and he could choose. His wife Elwing was the grand-daughter of Beren and Luthien, daughter of Dior the half-elf and Nimloth (an elf-woman), so she too could choose. Elrond and Elros could (and should) choose, and so could Arwen, Elladan and Elrohir. But Men couldn't.
Valar could resuscitate temporarily mortals (at first Tolkien had decided men waited for a while in the Halls of Mandos before they went into the Great Beyond) and they did so for Beren. But they couldn't delete the "gift" for good.

Frodo couldn't stay in Middle Earth due to his wound made by Nazgul Blade + Being a ring bearer = Too much darkness in him.
Only in the lands of the Valar he could rest in peace for the rest of his days.
Fun fact: Sam, Legolas and Gimli, all of them end sailing west as well. Sam after his wife dies, Gimli and Legolas after Aragorn dies. So only 4 of the nine original members of the Fellowship died in Middle Earth: Boromir, Merry, Pippin and Aragorn.
Merry & Pippin were buried alongside Aragorn in the royal crypt in Gondor.

If I remember right Legolas build his own ship to sail west with, and when we was done he invited Gimli to come with him which Gimli did. I like these kinds of endings. After the ring got destroyed they all more or less went their own way, sure they got to meet each other a couple of times but way less than you'd probably expect they would. But at the end of their story (life) they reunite once again to close their final chapter together.

And as to his question of how he could leave Sam. As long as Frodo lived in the Shire, Sam would never really be free to live his own life. Years later he still felt obligated to watch over him, and Sam needed to be able to able to devote himself wholly to his wife and kids. It was a cruel kindness to Sam for Frodo to leave.

And in that abyss, he encountered the nameless ones. Creatures as old as Sauron but far more vile. It's likely the only way Gandalf made it out of those tunnels is by pursuing and then killing Durin's Bane. Without a creature that already knew how to maneuver those tunnels, Gandolf would certainly have perished. In the books, Gandolf even refuses to speak of the evil he encountered down there.

A beautiful excerpt from the book:
"At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:
    _Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!_
_Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!_
_spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,_
_a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!_
_Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!_
With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains.
_Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!_
Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."

One of my favorite passages from the book, I've copied it myself to several LOTR reaction videos. :) It's great how the movie does it justice with the part about Theoden being ever before the rest of his men, you can clearly see no one is able to overtake him.

Then after Theorem dies you get another beautiful passage describing Eomer.
[Éomer] let blow the horns to rally all men to his banner that could come thither; for he thought to make a great shield-wall at the last, and stand, and fight there on foot till all fell, and do deeds of song on the fields of Pelennor, though no man should be left in the West to remember the last King of the Mark. So he rode to a green hillock and there set his banner, and the White Horse ran rippling in the wind.
Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode and to heart's breaking:
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!
These staves he spoke, yet he laughed as he said them. For once more lust of battle was on him; and he was still unscathed, and he was young, and he was king: the lord of a fell people. And lo! even as he laughed at despair he looked out again on the black ships, and he lifted up his sword to defy them.

I also like the bit when Éomer sees his sister lying there after killing the Witch-king
“Then suddenly he beheld his sister Éowyn as she lay, and he knew her. He stood a moment as a man who is pierced in the midst of a cry by an arrow through the heart; and then his face went deathly white; and a cold fury rose in him, so that all speech failed him for a while. A fey mood took him.
'Éowyn, Éowyn!' he cried at last: 'Éowyn, how come you here? What madness or devilry is this? Death, death, death! Death take us all!'
Then without taking counsel or waiting for the approach of the men of the City, he spurred headlong back to the front of the great host, and blew
a horn, and cried aloud for the onset. Over the field rang his clear voice calling: 'Death! Ride, ride to ruin and the world's ending!'
And with that the host began to move. But the Rohirrim sang no more.
Death they cried with one voice loud and terrible, and gathering speed like a great tide their battle swept about their fallen king and passed, roaring away southwards.”

It's important to understand the distinction between Smeagol and Gollum. Smeagol was never innocent, even before the Ring took him. He was always mischievous and selfish, but when he saw the Ring, he was instantly snared by it. The Ring amplifies a person's selfish desires and cruelty, and Smeagol's was just underneath the surface. And over 500 years, he developed the Gollum personality, which is the Ring's influence manifested as a dual personality. Gollum is pure evil and irredeemable. Smeagol may have had a chance for redemption, but that was never going to be his destiny. Because the simple fact of the matter is, there is not a single living soul who would have had the strength of will to throw the Ring into the fire of Mount Doom. Anyone standing on that ledge would have claimed it, no matter how good-natured. It could only ever be destroyed by a twist of fate. As Gandalf said, Gollum has a part to play. The Ring's sway over him was both of their undoing, and if he had been redeemed prior to that, it never would have been destroyed, and evil would have won out in the end.
It is actually a good thing that Sam gave the Ring back to Frodo. That simple act is the greatest feat of strength in the trilogy. Sam is holding the One Ring in Mordor, where its power is at its strongest. It is tempting him to claim it and use its power to turn Mordor into a glorious garden the like of which the world has never seen. It is trying to tempt him with what it thinks is his heart's greatest desire. But amazingly enough, his little home garden is all he needs, and Sam is able to relinquish the Ring with only minimal temptation. It is not his place to carry the Ring for Frodo, so if he had kept it, it would have corrupted him. But Sam held the Ring and gave it up willingly easier than anyone who had held it before. That one act is greater than any other accomplishment in the entire series, if you ask me.
Also, no, the moth does not turn into the eagle. Eagles are a sentient race in Middle-Earth. The moth is a motif to show that the eagles are near. In Fellowship, Gandalf used a moth to carry a message to the eagles. So when the moth shows up here, it's a sign they are coming.

Actually, the second one is not i the book and the first there is but not so emotionally charged. In the book only Aragorn bows to Frodo and Sam, and not during coronation, but during the celebration after the Battle, so it's not so a "public" demonstration.

    • @VoIcanoman
      @VoIcanoman Рік тому +7

@@Laurelin70 I think that addition is something of which Tolkien would have approved (and perhaps wished he wrote himself). On a related note, Peter Jackson made a few necessary changes from the books (including removing the "Scouring of the Shire" - a plot point which was effective in the book, showing us how the 4 hobbits had grown, and also proving that hobbits in general are able to fight for their freedom and win, but which would have made an already long film ending even longer), plus a couple questionable ones (I mean, I get why he had Faramir initially follow in Boromir's path, as it does add a lot of tension and a really cool scene with the Nazgûl riding the fell beast, and Frodo just holding the ring out...but in the canon, Faramir is not like his father and brother, and was never going to make their mistakes), *but the way he adapted Aragorn's character is perhaps the best change he made.* In the books, Aragorn never denied his heritage, nor had he expressed any reluctance to take up the kingship of Gondor if possible - he was already someone who was confident in his abilities, and was able to step into the role of leader without second-guessing himself. In the movies though, he had an actual character arc, going from someone who was ashamed of his heritage as the descendent of one who refused to destroy the ring, and afraid of being given power lest that weakness result in the destruction of Middle-Earth, and yet as he went forward on the quest with Frodo, leading the Fellowship after Gandalf died, then helping to lead the Rohirrim in battle before finally claiming the mantle of king and getting the ghosts to fight on his side, he grew into his role as a leader, and began to see that he'd be a good king. I think that is actually an improvement on the source material, which is pretty high praise given how great Tolkien's writings are.

After finally waking from so long being under Saruman's spell, Théoden is understandably given to pessimism, from learning of the recent death of his son Théodred (the funeral at which Éowyn sings that beautiful dirge) and speaking to Gandalf of how low his house has become, to his decision to fly to Helm's Deep instead of heeding Aragorn's advice to stand and fight, during which siege he almost fell to despair, until Aragorn roused him out of it.
Now he stands off the right flank of a superior force, of many tens of thousands of orcs, Haradrim and Easterlings (estimates have ranged from 75,000 to over 600,000), challenging it with a cavalry of only 6,000 spears. He knows that even given the advantage of charging cavalry over a walking infantry, it is still not enough to overcome a 10 to 1 (much less a 100 to 1) difference. He certainly knows his relatively small force cannot carry the day, and that it will take a miracle even to fight through the lines and join with the besieged defenders of the city. And yet, despite whatever struggles within his own mind, despite the vast sea of enemies filling the Pelennor before him, this great king knows this charge is the only thing he can do in service of good over evil, and so he will see it done.
So he gives his battle cry, lends courage to his Rohirrim, leads the charge into battle at the head of his force, and fights like one possessed. Gone are the soft whisperings in a darkened hall by one with the nickname 'wormtongue' speaking to him of reeking bowers, and a once-proud kingdom fallen into disrepute. Now he is a king of old, mighty and determined, hurling tons of steel into the flank of the enemy with all the strength that sinew of horses and men can wield.
And in the end, the king lies upon that field, crushed under his horse, the light slowly fading from his eyes, but with a light in his heart he has not felt in years. "I go to my fathers, in whose mighty company, I shall not now feel ashamed." Well done, Théoden king. Well done.

The very first time I read J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy, was when my father handed me the books when I was 11 years old.
So I sprawled on my bed and began to read, with no expectations or idea of what was to come.
I have no memory of the passage of time for next three days...I don't even remember food or daylight or dark.
All I knew was the Road I was on and the gentleness of the Shire and the horror of the Ringwraiths.
And the ease and peace of Rivendell contrasted with the desperate, hopeless plans they laid there.
The long dark of Moria, and the time spent out of time in Lothlorian...
The deep sonorous voices and the endless depths in the eyes of the Ents.
And the leap of the flames of the watch towers across the mountains. And the charge of the Rohirrim, and the desperation of the last battle in Mordor.
The heartbroken failure and stunning redemption of one small hobbit...
And the lesson that you cannot always go home, and that sometimes you can only save things for others, but not for yourself...
And then the gentle shock of the ending - "Well, I'm back."
And then I sat back down and read it straight through all over again.
    And that is Love.

The reason Theoden ordered the charge straight to the Oliphaunts was because he didnt want them to reach the gates of the city at any cost. If they made it to the gates, they would've seiged the city. Theoden also did not know that Aragorn was going to be coming with the dead army

Theoden didn’t head on charge em because he wanted to fight then straight up. He wanted to get behind them.
Yes going for a pincer is a good option. However, it takes mass amounts of manoeuvring, orders, planning, having units split from command - also doing such in visual sight of the enemy doesn’t work either as they just counter by, moving out to their flanks too and now your facing two smaller lines of oliphants against your smaller groups.
Plus, Theoden is having to order this mid battle. Most charges or even pincer manoeuvres are set up ahead of time with everyone knowing what to do, where to go and who to stay with; you also have set squadrons, clear leadership within them and fresh horses.
This is a charge of order during the charge. In such occasions all previous things above are absolutely gone. Men will be scattered as such you essentially can’t rally them back into a fixed formation easily, you have to get them as fast as you can; your leadership may be wounded, dead or missing, as such complex tasks are an issue to get ordered and then executed - note you don’t also have time to delay such, your working off a minute clock. If your order will take 20 minutes to think up, task and execute, your going to be overrun.
Plus your also now dealing with wounded and fatigued fighters, and also blown horses. Getting them to preform complex order will now take even more time.
So. In situations like this. What Theoden does actually is the best solution.
Rally as many men as possible around you into a new line. Attack straight ahead to meet the enemy - which will also keep them focused on you and not attempting to make their own manoeuvres. Yes people are going to die and get hit, but many many more will break through into the rear and can begin attacking.
Casualties in war are beyond inevitable and yes commanders will always try to come up with the best actions to keep as many men from ending up wounded or dead.
However, when in the midst of battle and such plans are having to be made in split decision timing, such worry’s have to be forced into secondary positions, with primary ones being how to execute a simple order that can be quickly understood and acted upon to defeat our foe in as short a time as possible.
Yes this order may end up costing several more lives than if it had been planned out meticulously. However, it’s likely also the best order in the situation that can be resolved in easy seconds and acted upon by men already in combat.

They marvel at the small size of the hobbits, but it's agreed there's more to them than meets the eye. One of them points out Frodo. "See that one? They say he travelled alone to Mordor, taking only his servant with him, and fought with the Dark Lord himself."
It's something like that anyway, I don't remember exactly, but I always thought it was a nice touch, showing how the actual events weren't really clear to the average person.

And there's this whole "conspiracy" this is really just a myth story about defeating Sauron and none of the details are sure to be correct 😂 There are mentions that the actual LOTR books are a so-called Red Book of Westmarch, which is supposed to be the in-world manuscript of LOTR, kinda like a chronicle book. However it was rewritten at least once, so there's no guarantee stuff like specific dialogues ever happened as per authors' creative adaptations.
So in this view, LOTR is just a story within the world of Middle-Earth, and since the world of Middle-Earth has had its elves leave and dwarves dwindle and Valinor become inaccessible along with magic... it might actually be intended as story from the forgotten history of our own world 😀 Food for thought

In the books the bit where Frodo gets got by the spider happens at the end of The Two Towers, which made it a huge cliffhanger when the books were originally released (not all at once).

Even worse, due to the structure of the book (first half from the perspective of the rest of the fellowship, second half with Frodo and Sam), you don’t find out what happened to them until a bit over halfway through RotK. The music when Sam carries Frodo breaks my entire heart every time. Just SHATTERS IT.... tbh, most of the score does that, and by the last 40 minutes of RotK I'm a mess anyway. "You bow to no one" is also a beautiful moment where the smallest and most humble are exalted above the mighty and proud.
...But more than anything, I always sympathize a lot with Sam at the end of RotK. A while back my sister, one of my closest confidants, moved overseas (actually to an island near new zealand) and we all thought it was going to be a permanent move, thus I would only see her once for maybe a week every 3-4 years for the rest of our lives, slowly growing apart. It was devastating for about 3 years, until she came home and said it wasn't working out... It reminds me of pioneers who went on dangerous journeys across the wilderness with no promise of ever seeing their families again. Anyway parting with a close loved one, even if they are going off to be happy, can really hurt. But poor Frodo could never be at peace in Middle Earth. Some wounds don't heal... and while everyone thinks he saved Middle Earth... but he and Sam know that he actually failed. And Frodo... he alone knows how deeply that ring destroyed his soul.

Aragorn II Elessar lived to be 210, leaving the kingdom to his son, Eldarion. Arwen Undomiel, a year later, died of a broken heart. They had been married for 122 years.
Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took both found spouses. Pippin had a son, who he named Faramir. Merry and Pippin moved to Rohan, and then Gondor, where they spent their last days. They were both entombed alongside the king.
Legolas stayed in Middle Earth for a while, adventuring with Gimli and repairing the war-torn land. Gimli and other dwarves repaired the gate of Minas Tirith, and improved the city. He also lead them to the Glittering Caves (the caves behind Helm's deep), where he established a new Dwarven kingdom.
When Aragorn had passed, Legolas built a ship to sail to the Undying Lands, a journey which he invited his close friend Gimli to join. An invitation that was never extended to a Dwarf before. Gimli was never again seen on Middle Earth.
Samwise Gamgee became mayor of the Shire. And when he got old and his wife passed, he passed on the red book that contained both Bilbo's and Frodo's stories to his daughter. Sam was also granted passage to the Undying Lands because he was a ringbearer, if only for a short time. There, he was reunited with Frodo and they spent the rest of their final days together.

Fun fact: the book gives the events of the second and third books broken in half and broken up differently, so you follow Aragorn and his group for the first half up to the end of the Helms deep section and Frodo and Sam for the second up to the point where Frodo is poisoned and taken by the orcs, so the second book ends with the words Fordo was alive, but taken by the enemy and when you start the third book you have to read the whole Aragorn side of the story right up to the point they are at the gates of Mordor and have been given the mithril coat without knowing how Sam rescued Frodo. It is still one of the most suspenseful things I have ever read. I love that in the end Frodo fails, and it was evil itself that destroyed evil. I love that despite far better treatment then he deserved, Gollum in the end could not be redeemed. The book is always better, but this is one of the cases where almost all the changes they made worked well for the movie adaptation, it may be drawn out but its epic and certainly matches the spirt of the source material. I personally just wish movie viewers got that wait to find out what happened to Frodo that us book readers did.

All of the men who would otherwise have been the horse riders were out fishing, so women took their place as extras, their gender hidden by the armor and helmets they wore as costumes.

They would make wonderful soldiers--except they have no interest in glory or fighting for treasure, honor, or anything else except to protect themselves. I've always liked what the book tells us:
"Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land, and armies flocking to his call as he marched to the overthrow of Barad-dur. And then all the clouds rolled away, and the white sun shone, and at his command the vale of Gorgoroth became a garden of flowers and trees and brought forth fruit. He had only to put on the Ring and claim it for his own, and all this could be. In that hour of trial it was his love of his master that helped most to hold him firm; but also deep down in him lived still unconquered his plain hobbit-sense: he knew in the core of his heart that he was not large enough to bear such a burden, even if such visions were not a mere cheat to betray him. The one small garden of a free gardener was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command. 'And anyway all these notions are only a trick, he said to himself."
It was his loyalty to Frodo and lack of a desire for power that helped Sam. Wonderful character.

One of the best reactions I ever saw. You guys were so into it and made it some much fun watching you. By the way, Sam had 13 kids and was mayor of The Shire like 7 times or something. When he died he got to be with Frodo again because remember, Sam was a ring bearer.

That was really great you two! Glad I found your channel brother. Isn’t it amazing to think that one man (with no editor) wrote this story about love and death, good vs evil, friendship and honor ….and that it has affected so many lives? To this day I can’t wrap my head around how perfect and pure this story is. As you can tell by the amount of LOTR fans that showed up…its rewatch-able and timeless. It NEVER gets old and will always pull on your heartstrings.

@@justtrustash Absolutely man I agree. The odds were against Peter Jackson…so many things had to fall into place to make it happen. The appendices that came with the original dvd release are really great if you want to take a deep dive behind the scenes! it’s like 6 or 8 hours worth of the making of. *Hint hint nudge nudge…it’s been posted on UA-cam recently.

"What are you doing Sam?" Sam just had himself a Galaldriel moment and realized that just holding it made him hesitant to give it up. Which is why he did and says later on "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!"

Frodo never fully healed from his wounds, which means he could never stay happy in Middle-Earth. He, Gandalf, Bilbo, and the rest are going to the undying lands (Elf heaven essentially), where mortal beings usually aren't allowed. An exception is made for Frodo and Bilbo because they were ring bearers. In the appendices we learn that Sam becomes mayor of the Shire and lives a long and happy life. After his wife dies, he also sails west to the undying lands because he was briefly a ring bearer. So Frodo and Sam do meet again. Merry and Pippin spend their days with Aragorn in Gondor, and when they die they are buried next to Aragorn's grave. Legolas and Gimli remain friends, and their friendship heals the rift between Dwarf and Elf. When they reach their end, they also sail to the undying lands together. It's a massive honor for Gimli, being a dwarf, and never a ring bearer. Once they leave, the fellowship is gone from Middle Earth forever.

I laughed so hard when Sam stabs the spider in the eye and you go "it only has one eye now!" Forgetting it's a spider with eight.

43:46 A little known fact about this scene, that actually was the actor Sean Astin's daughter in real life appearing in a major movie rushing up to hug her dad 😁 She got the play the role of Sam's first born daughter Elanor who was named that at Frodo's suggestion and eventually, one day also got to journey to The Undying Lands.

If you look at the end with the Eagles Gandalf actually brought an extra one he really hope that Smeagol would turn a new Leaf
