Stephen, thanks for always being so open and honest. It’s nice to know that the pre-video depression isn’t as uncommon as i was imagining. Your films are marvelously shot and brilliantly produced but I do have 1 complaint. You’ve made it impossible for me to see a sheep without hearing your “Hi Sheep” in my head! Keep inspiring good sir!!
I was in North Donegal attending ia course. I fell in love with the pople and the wild beautiful scenery. One Saturday a group of us climbed Errigal. When we reached the summit, the 360 degree views simply took my breath away. I've been in 20 different countries since but that was the standout moment as far as beautiful scenery is concerned!
The colours…the layers….the textures…the anticipation! What a toastie!😮 Great video Stephen. You take me places I have been, places I am even familiar with, and you make me want to go back and next time see for myself some of what you capture for the screen. With Errigal I think it’s the loneliness and the silence. I feel I was with you, even to the extent I got the feeling it was me getting back to the cosy van as the light faded. Looking forward to part two.
Thanks Paul! 🙂 That's always the goal, take the viewer along for the hike. Although I was very much not alone, the summit was really crowded, but wasn't the vibe I was going for so went off and found my own anti-social spot 🤣
What a beautiful mountain. What you described is almost what I feel sometimes. I love planning walks and I really look forward to them but when the day comes I often just don't feel like going and I'll make excuses as to why I'm not going. I really have to push myself. Its daft as I know as soon as I'm walking I feel great.
I've found making videos has helped to force me out. I treat it like it's a job and that helps with the inertia. But I have bailed on both hikes and videos a few times.
@StephenJReid I recognised straight away what you were describing. For me it doesn't make sense how I feel because I know getting out walking makes me happy.
@@StephenJReid One of the best pieces of running advice I've heard is that it's not motivation that you need, it's discipline. You have to tell yourself that it doesn't matter whether you want to do it or not, you have to do it. I've had dozens of runs that I didn't want to do, but I never regretted a single one of them. I came back feeling like I'd battled with my will and won. The whole exercise would almost seem masochistic were it not for the fact that you know that at the end of it all you'll be glad you did it. I know what you're discussing isn't running Stephen, and I'm probably trivialising hugely, but I wonder if there's something similar at work here.
@dallan7740 what keeps me going is that I treat it like a job when I’m making a video. I’m here to do the job, I just have to do it even if I don’t feel like it, because it’s my job. With running I used to have a lot more discipline, trained for hours on the road, hurting the entire time. Because I was motivated to get a new PB. I’ve totally lost that discipline on the roads, I don’t care now, PBs are meaningless really. So I need different goals now.
Fab..fab…fab. Thanks for your honesty…it has inspired me to 1. To climb Mount Errigal and 2. To show everyone that it is ok to have an ‘off day’ or moment and 3. How to make an awesome toastie lol. Brilliant video Stephen, keep doing what you’re doing 👍
Hope to get back to Ireland and especially Donegal soon. Love the video. The air we stand in often gets very calm at sunset and sunrise due to temperature inversion. At sunset, the ground cools much faster than the air, so the air closest to the ground ( where you are standing) becomes colder than the air above it and it becomes difficult for the faster moving air above to mix with the colder air you are standing in. The effect is that you sense no movement, quiet.
Absolutely brilliant again. The channel is a breath of fresh air and I'm thankful you do push through because the result is excellent. It looked like a tight wee summit but the views were just stunning and hopefully worth the wait. Again, absolutely brilliant stuff and I look forward to seeing more.
Yeah a crowded summit up there! About 20 people crowded right up there, so found my own quiet spot. Been wanting to hike Errigal for about 4years but wanted ideal conditions for a video, glad I finally got them!
Thanks for being so candid re; pre-video depression. My channel has been dead for over a year now because I just ran out of will to edit videos etc. But I'm planning on doing a video looking for the red squirrels of Anglesey next month and I really hope it's what I need to get back into the very early stage of my film making.
As always Stephen you produce wonderful content and stories. Unfortunately I feel like that everyday. Keep on enjoying what you do as you bring so much joy to everyone.
Fantastic video! I must visit Ireland, you're showing us incredibile landscapes and trekking routes! I also sometimes get very grumpy even a bit angry for some reasons when I start one of my video projects, somehow it seems as a lot of effort for nothing or I'm already displeased but the results, but at the same time I really love shooting new videos and editing them. I think it has something to do with the creative process, it's a lot of rubber banding our brain! 😁

Stephen, the most important comment you made in the video was “it was worth it.” When I have the depressive inertia (great phrase, btw), that’s when I focus on the process and not the result. The tough part is trusting myself enough to accept that the process will get the result. The fact that you didn’t return to the van, the strength it took to overcome that moment allowed you (and us, thank you) to see that glorious sunset. Much appreciated, friend. Always much appreciated.

Great video, as always, Stephen. I think most of us feel overwhelmed when we start projects. But I always talk myself into and it turns out ok. I believe it's part of the human condition. Things that really matter to us cause us the most stress. If they didn't matter to us, they wouldn't be such a big deal.
I have enjoyed literally every one of your videos. You had my full respect gained until it happened. 2:28 in this video, Lurpak. Utterly unforgivable in the land of the worlds best butter!
An epic video..Once again the quality of your video and vision are superb. As for the problem of getting out and making the video, I know where you're coming from. It's appended to me on and off over the last 40 years that I've been shooting sport for local paper...I arrive at venue and basically want to go home. Once the camera is out then I'm OK. Thanks again for the video and look forward to the next episode. Best wishes
I've lived in wicklow most of my life I'm going to do this mountain asap we do live in a little gem what we have on our doorstep is amazing if anyone reading this wants to do a beautiful hike its the spinc walk in glendalough home of St laurance otoole my ancestors, you can spend the day there one hour from Dublin St Kevin's bus will get you there
I'm from Derry. Camped in both Wicklow and Glenties (near Errigal for those unfamiliar). Both are amazing places. Donegal is more rugged and exposed as you see here. Wicklow is greener, softer and more... I want to say intimate ... more enclosed, like being in held in cupped hands. I'd encourage any outdoors person to come and explore. Especially when we get a dry spell where the clouds shift away to let us see the land.
As a channel who has filmed over 300 sunsets in the past year, it is very rare from the wind to STOP at sundown and very common that the wind picks UP speed when the sun disappears. I think it has something to do with the sudden temperature difference.
Lovely video, the sunset shots was nothing short of mastery. Thanks for your candor. I recognize the sense of stagefright all to well. I almost quit making videos because of the same feeling since it only got worse when I started editing. Today I'm thankful that I pushed through that sense of discomfort. I don't know if you alreday got the answer to why the wind dies down at sunset... but it's because the temperature difference between land and a large body of water. In daytime the sun warms land faster than water and you get a seabreeze, around sunset land and water have the same temperature since land cools of much faster and the breeze dies down at the equlibrium. During the night when land drops even further in temperature you get a landbreeze in the other direction. Rinse and repeat. Cheers!
Have you ever climbed Croagh Patrick? The views over the country side on a clear day is beautiful, especially on summers evening. It is not difficult for a hiker like you to climb.
1:40 - Your lav mike combined with your choice of shirt makes you look like you’re wearing a super hero shirt. Until the next close up shot showing the object was a mike,, I thought it was a superhero shirt. You also obviously have an eye for color given your color grading in your compositions. You definitely like red, but I’m left to wonder if you chose a bright blue backpack for additional contrast rather than a complimentary or same color to coordinate your adventure wardrobe? 3:25 - That looks incredibly…..healthy. Superb presentation. Not enough to convince this American that I should give that a go. Incidentally, your country is incredibly scenic and beautiful. I want to visit Ireland one day, but until then, you do an amazing job of really REALLY making me want to make it out there.
P.S. In case you’re wondering why I’m commenting on the minor b-roll items when you work so hard to bring fantastic nature shots; no worries, those are absolutely appreciated indeed!
Oh trust me, that was not a healthy toastie 🤣 A LOT of butter and cheese. yeah I deliberately wear a red coat sometimes for the contrast, although not always. And yes I thought the blue backpack would contrast well too. It's a new backpack I'm testing from Moment and they offered me blue or black. I do quite like heavily saturated, sometimes overbaked colours. I'm always having to pull back a bit on it because not everyone likes that look. I think people should wear more colours, a lot of filmmakers and photographers just wear black and it's borrrring!
Unbelievable video as always Stephen. I came for the summer solstice (which was brilliant) but took some great advice out of the video. Love the channel.
Wow beautiful video, amazing you still have light so late. Apart you being super fit compared to me, is there a setting in the DJI mic not to pick up puffing 😅
Sorry I’m so late watching this. I’m playing catch up with some of my favourite content. 😊 When you were talking about that difficulty getting started it made me think about PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) so I thought I’d mention it in case it helps to make sense of the thing.
Thank you for your honesty. I think there is many of us that feel that way and not necessarily only in regards to filming. Ever time i go for a hike (or most times ) it takes me hours to get ready...not because it takes me hours but because i keep feeling like cancelling ..Once i am out on the mountains or in the forests I love it but getting there is the mission. And also thank you for bringing us along for the wonderful sunset and views.
Used to get terrible migraine just prior to recording and shooting stuff... decided the industry wasn't for me..almost forty years ago. I think we build up pre emptive reactions to the worst scenario experiences and that little "don't feck it up"voice stays with us ever after
Sounds like Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). Me and my daughter has it. And it's a pain in the hoop. Just starting things you should be getting done burns so much energy, hence the tiredness. Might be worth looking into.
10:35, I know what you are talking about I have this with various projects, like writing a personal web site entry, or writing a paragraph for a book, or even playing a computer game - barely have the wish to do it, the only case when I am fully ok committing though is taking a drone with 1 battery with myself for a hike, however when there are some people around cant be bothered to fly it, it's a brain thing, the brain prefers to do nothing and avoid stress and hibernate instead 😂
Yup! It has since been suggested to me by a few people it could be partly ADHD, but who knows 🤷♂️ I think everyone who makes something struggles with this to a certain degree at some point.
Great video.. have watched a few now and enjoy your content.. slightly left field question.. what glasses are you wearing in this video? I like the frames...thanks in advance
Dude as always I love your films and more and more the last while, honestly and fun the way films should be, This one more as I’ve filmed races and ran up there and back down with hand held cameras while drone up doing its magic & me with action camera while running 😅 just thinking about it now seems stressful 😮something I don’t miss and that was a paid job… #multitasker 😅 and other times racing I never got to fully enjoy the experience so thinks for giving me this. But what you say about stage fright or whatever it’s called I get this lots and just can’t be bothered filming anymore !! Part of me wants my own freedom…… to fully appreciate my own boat life and off grid life style and filming so maybe it’s just normal …. I don’t know really still working this out…. but what I do know as an artist I get and still have “artist block “ holding me back from enjoying painting for the joy of it and I think that joy was taken from me when people started to want more of my art… again I don’t know but long as we can get into nature life is always worth the art.. keep up the great work as always and maybe we can meet up w _ it became like a job and maybe I don’t want that job and want more a hobbyist lifestyle? Ill what’s app up as planned a gravel bike wild camp cycling tour in mid October up north and not sure if I will film it yet… Let’s see…. But maybe we can meet along the ways… Peace 😊
Stephen, please could you tell me the title of the song included in the video with the lyrics "I heard a bell ringing this morning and it woke me from a dream"? Sorry to ask - I promise I have tried googling but I've had no success. (Also sorry if it's a really obvious song).
LOVED THE VIDEO! CANT SAY ENOUGH HOW MUCH I ENJOYED!!! Are you getting the new Sony ZV-1 Mk II ? If yes, cant wait to see you review it! Another thing : What camera did you use while shooting the scene at 0:16 or 12:40 ? And whats the song at 1:00 ....
Thank you! 🙂 Those shots were with the Sony A7iv using the song 18-135mm lens. It's an APSC lens, so I used it in crop mode. Most of the video was shot with that combo. Was a bit of an experiment.
That depressive inertia is the psychological upset of the human condition, the only cure is to read 'Freedom, the end of the human condition' by Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith
The thermals die down when the sun sets, so the air is not being sucked under to displace the rising air. Skydivers use this to their benefit on windy days.
Stephen, I think what you're describing sounds like pathological demand avoidance, a feature of ADHD. It doesn't seem to stop you from doing and videoing some awesome stuff!
Well I’ve had 3 doctors since then tell me it’s highly likely I have ADHD. Would explain a LOT of other stuff too. But impossible to get officially diagnosed without paying a lot of money currently.
@@StephenJReid Tell me about it. I had my son diagnosed at 17 by a private consultant. He had to be re-diagnosed as an adult in order to get a prescription for meds at a cost of €600! It shouldn't be so difficult

Best wishes
Thanks Andy 🙂 glad to know I’m not the only one
Another fantastic video Stephen.👏👏 You should try Arranmore island the next time you are over over this way. 😎
Might do! Anywhere in particular on it is worth a visit?
@@StephenJReid Its a relatively small island but out "the back" of the island has massive sea cliffs, stacks, arches and the famous steps.
I've lived in wicklow most of my life I'm going to do this mountain asap we do live in a little gem what we have on our doorstep is amazing if anyone reading this wants to do a beautiful hike its the spinc walk in glendalough home of St laurance otoole my ancestors, you can spend the day there one hour from Dublin St Kevin's bus will get you there
It's the spinc walk
@@deirdreoriordan9042 changed that there deirdre
I'm from Derry. Camped in both Wicklow and Glenties (near Errigal for those unfamiliar). Both are amazing places. Donegal is more rugged and exposed as you see here. Wicklow is greener, softer and more... I want to say intimate ... more enclosed, like being in held in cupped hands. I'd encourage any outdoors person to come and explore. Especially when we get a dry spell where the clouds shift away to let us see the land.
Wow nice sir.. I like it😃.. Beautiful view❤
Thanks Ajay!
@@StephenJReid you are welcome sir
As a channel who has filmed over 300 sunsets in the past year, it is very rare from the wind to STOP at sundown and very common that the wind picks UP speed when the sun disappears. I think it has something to do with the sudden temperature difference.
Great video you have inspired me to go here
Lovely video, the sunset shots was nothing short of mastery.
Cheers!
Landbreeze and sea breeze. Thanks! That’s fascinating 😁
Epic hike
Yup!
Outstanding video. Thank you.
Thanks for the video 🎬🎥 👍
I like the van, Errigal is beautiful, subbed.
Most interesting toasty I've ever seen 🤩 couldn't get all the ingredients but it looks super!!
Unbelievable video as always Stephen. I came for the summer solstice (which was brilliant) but took some great advice out of the video. Love the channel.
Thanks Geoff! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Class mate. When I was up there I couldn't see a thing haha
Thanks James. I was determined to have a view!
@@StephenJReid you definitely got that mate
Nice video Stephen, if I make it Donegal from Cork some day I may trace your footsteps to the summit of Errigal. BTW, keep 'pushing through' 😁
I used to go down the scree at the top between the 2 summits to Dunlewey but it's all washed out now.
run down the scree? I had a fell runner in the Lake District last year show me how they run down scree
Really like your videos Stephen
thanks Mark 🙂
Wow beautiful video, amazing you still have light so late. Apart you being super fit compared to me, is there a setting in the DJI mic not to pick up puffing 😅
Haha just hold your breath when using the mic 😂
Sorry I’m so late watching this. I’m playing catch up with some of my favourite content. 😊 When you were talking about that difficulty getting started it made me think about PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) so I thought I’d mention it in case it helps to make sense of the thing.
Interesting! I’ll look it up
Thank you for your honesty.
You’re very welcome and thanks for the comment 🙂
Sorry shoild have read....Life and human nature just isn't perfect....thanks for a perfect morning.
Fantastic hike on a mountain I hadn’t heard of , definitely inspired me to do this , thanks from over in Wales!
Adam
Thus guy rocks 😊
Used to get terrible migraine just prior to recording and shooting stuff... decided the industry wasn't for me..almost forty years ago. I think we build up pre emptive reactions to the worst scenario experiences and that little "don't feck it up"voice stays with us ever after
Sounds like Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). Me and my daughter has it. And it's a pain in the hoop. Just starting things you should be getting done burns so much energy, hence the tiredness. Might be worth looking into.
Been watching some of videos and been wondering what sort of camera do you use? Great views 🙌🏼
Ha, I think they are Hugo Boss frames
Great video Stephen ..what boots are you wearing
Vivos!
@@StephenJReid MAGNA FOREST ESC going for these
Dude as always I love your films and more and more the last while, honestly and fun the way films should be,
This one more as I’ve filmed races and ran up there and back down with hand held cameras while drone up doing its magic & me with action camera while running 😅 just thinking about it now seems stressful 😮something I don’t miss and that was a paid job… #multitasker 😅
and other times racing I never got to fully enjoy the experience so thinks for giving me this.
Yeah, rays make it (much) better! :-)
love the rays!
Wonderful! What's the song at 00:57?
Brilliant video 👏 wats the song at the start of ur video
Shout out Mexicana extra hot cheese slices 🔥
Your cap must be from Norway? Vågå is mountain comune in south norway.
It’s a brand from Cumbria in England. Maybe that’s where they got the name though as I’ve always wondered
Can you see Scotland from the summit of errigal?
Apparently you can see one of the islands off Scotland on a clear day
whats the name of the tune from 0:8-0:19?
Try Wim Hoff method
Jes now I'M HUNGRY!! LOL

The thermals die down when the sun sets, so the air is not being sucked under to displace the rising air. Skydivers use this to their benefit on windy days.
I grew up in her shadow. To me she was Erebor.
Question answered lol😂
😁😁
