RHYD DDU - The Real Best Route Up Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лип 2024
- Arguably the best, but one of the most quiet routes up Snowdon / Yr Wyddfa (highest mountain in Wales) is the Rhyd Ddu path. Joining it up with the Ranger route on the descent, plus a shortcut through an abandoned quarry makes for a 10mile loop of a hike with incredible variety.

Went to climb Snowdon a few months ago. Took this exact route on the strength of this video. It did not disappoint. Thank you.
BRILLIANT! that's what I want to hear, so glad you enjoyed the route. Was it busy?
I know you’re a pro, Stephen, but this is a masterpiece. The effort you put in to getting different angles, slo-mo, aerial shots and wide-angle stuff is second-to-none. Then there’s the audio - whether it’s backing music or effects, it just fits so well. The colour grading makes a huge difference to the drama and some of the shots are out of this world. Really appreciate the work you put in to the whole process. Awesome.
Thanks so much Ste 🙂 I put a ton of work into the edit of this and glad it’s paid off! Colour graded most of the shots separately, with 3 stage grade and matched all 4 cameras etc. wanted every key shot to be graded like a photograph.
Normally I’d pressure myself to get a video out in a week. Have myself two weeks so I could take my time. L
I enjoyed the review as well.
Agreed 👌👌
Awesome video. You were so brave taking that shortcut in that weather 🎉❤😅
Atmospheric colour grading. Spectacularly shot. First time I've ever seen an air biscuit 🍪 😹
Thanks! 🙂 I hope whoever the air biscuit landed on was happy
I know nothing of cinematography but the quality of this video impressed me massively. The cut, the music, the colors, the humor. I probably cannot even begin to estimate how much work was put into this video. I'm sure it was a lot. And it shows. It honestly makes me consider traveling to Wales this year and hike in Snowdonia.
Thanks so much! That means a lot 🙂 definitely put a lot of work into this one so I’m glad people are enjoying it!
I'm out of breath Sir! A completely exhilarating hike in a most beautiful place. Thank you for showing me a piece of my ancestral country.
Thanks Ken! If I’d known there was so much to explore on the route I’d have brought more food and spent a bit longer 😁
Randomly came across your channel the other night! I can say after three videos including this one it has become one of my favorite!
I definitely miss wales! I was there this last summer and fell in love with that dramatic landscape there in Snowdonia!
Oh thanks very much Scott! 🙂 I’m curious, what was the first video you found?
Amazing, can't wait to visit. Thanks so much for the amazing views!
Thanks Lisa 🙂
At least your biscuit will feed 1000 small bugs 😂 . Epic Video , the best yet if I say so 👌
Well they better enjoy it!!!
Thanks, took my time editing this one 🙂
Excellent video Stephen, I thoroughly enjoyed that.
Fantastic video Stephen! My partner and I are hoping to get to Wales for the first time later this year, and this video just makes me even more keen for it to happen! Brilliantly made - I'm super impressed how many times you sent the drone up. And you even managed to sneak Grogu in too...nice!
Thanks Lisa! 🙂 first time there and already planning to head back in the summer.
That was spectacular! Thanks so much for taking us along. 😊
Have to say, that bicky flying off into the abyss had me shreiking with laughter! 😂
Thanks Kathryn 🙂 justice for bicci!!! 😂
So many beautiful shots in this video, the ridge was like a scene from a movie. Have a great week Stephen 👌
Thank you! 🙂
Great video looks like an amazing hike even baby yoda keeping ya safe 😂
This is the way, to hike 😁
Great film, really felt the adventure. Snowdon is amazing both tame & wild, Ive been up twice but havent seen the view yet.
Thanks David! Well you’ve seen the view from the top as much as me 😂 Heading back later in year hopefully will get a view!
That wind really did take the biscuit 😁
Great video as always, certainly looks a fantastic route.
I see what you did there! 🤣
Excellent we’ve been following along on your channel for a while and really enjoyed this video and the flying biscuit was brilliant, so funny. 😂. Have walked up Snowdon a few times but never this route, it looked nice and quiet so we will give it a go next time we go.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it 🙂 I only met 3 people on the way up, really quiet route. Probably a couple hundred on the Ranger route on the way down. I’m still missing that biscuit
Great route and a very professional video. Spot on matey
Once again your film skills have provided a superb video...what a great adventure even though the monster of Snowdon got your last biscuit and then the trip through the bog....as a photographer I would love to tour the old slate mines....thank you for a great video, best wishes
Thanks Andy! Yeah I’d love to have gone back to the abandoned quarry again for a proper explore, probably only saw about 10th of it
I’m doing this route next month, really enjoyed this. Beautifully shot!
Once again Stephen you have out done yourself. The quality of your content is unmatched and you have really developed a unique style. I saw you the other day near a 'Scrapyard...' didn't stop to say hello as you seemed busy. But I mentioned to my friend who you were and said something along the lines of "He makes vlog style videos walking up mountains." They said that sounds a bit bland until I opened up UA-cam and their response was "He could make a rock into a cinematic masterpiece."
Thanks very much David 🙂 put a lot more time into the edit on this one. Longer videos need more care I think.
Ah yes, I was in charge of a bunch of teenagers at the time! Should have said hello and given me some street cred with them 😂😂
I’m off to film that rock
Absolutely loved this Stephen, especially the flying biscuit 🍪 amazing footage, enjoyed every second. My favourite video of yours 👏 and i want to climb this mountain now 🤠
Thanks Sarah, glad you enjoyed it 🙂
My expression would mimic yours whether it was my last biscuit or any biscuit. Great video.
😂 still want my biscuit back
Hey Stephen. This is a 💯 awesome video, thankyou so much for sharing. I followed to Rhyd Ddu path on Sat 19th Aug, the morning after Storm Betty landed in Wales! We (me and my friend) got to approx point 10.52 in your video and I had to turn round. I was too scared. Very narrow, very windy, very high & very slippery; I hate heights. We were only about 0.2 miles from the summit but I honestly had to stop! I said I'd wait for my friend if he wanted to carry on but he was very apprehensive as well. Going back down was scarier then going up! That said, it was an amazing experience and a round trip of 7miles. I so wish I could've continued 😭
Thank you Martin! Sorry you didn’t make it to the summit, but always better to trust your instincts. If it had of been crazy windy when I was up I’d maybe not have done the ridge bit. Definitely scarier coming down a ridge too than going up!
There isn't a word in English that describes those shafts of light through clouds as well as the French word for it...éclaircies. This is a beautiful video!
Thank you Elisabeth! 🙂 and that's a brilliant word éclaircies
Amazing as always dude 😊
Thanks Juju! 🙂
Epic stuff! Love the video!
Thanks Ren! 🙂
This is the best Snowdon film. So entertaining and the effort you put into filming.. amazing. I did the same route a couple of years ago. The ridge was a bit scary cos I walked in the dark (stayed on top overnight to watch the sunrise) but yes it is a good route. Came down Ranger as well but on nice dry path not this boggy shortcut hehee... although it was very entertaining to watch you walking in the bog :)
Thanks Linda! 🙂 I highly recommend the fun of the bog 😂
Fantastc video Stephen. It brought back many happy memories of my walking holidays spent in Snowdonia many years back. I hope you get to go back and do Crib Goch/Crib y Ddysdl some time - both are most excellent - especially in good weather. Don’t forget about the Glyders on the north of the Llanberis Pass - A true rock rats paradise with some awsome views. Thanks for the video - wonderful 👍👍
Thanks Paul. Had planned on hiking part of the Glyders when I was visiting but ended up running out of time. I’ll be back!
Well, this was wildly serendipitous. Was just planning a similar trip for June! Looks wildly gorgeous.
Well timed then! Reckon you might get better views from the summit in June!
@@StephenJReid Counting on it, but I am drawn nonetheless to these gloomy vibes. Just got that last weekend on a trail run through Harz National Park!
Yeah unpredictable weather day’s definitely give the most unique views
Brilliant Stephen!
Thanks Mark! 🙂
Did Llanberis pass two weeks ago. Might try Rhyd Du path next time
Ok half way through the video, I didn’t even care what was inside the tent. This was a great video
Thanks Lisa! 🙂
Hope you enjoyed it. I got the ferry over in February and done the Glyders, the Carnedd range, and went up the Pyg track and down the Watkin path. It was tremendous. Trip to Scotland next maybe
Thanks Billy! Wish I had time to do more hikes when I was over but was working at the same time and the weather was horrendous a couple of the days. I’ll be back though.
Was in Scotland twice last year, no further north than Inverness though.
I see it's already been said - but the production quality on this is nuts man. Very well done.
Excellent video. Not just beautiful scenery but great fun
Thanks Renee! 🙂 Glad you enjoyed it, have you ever hike it?
@@StephenJReid No im from the states but it has been on my list to see
Well that just took the biscuit 😂 great video
Haha thanks!
Fantastic video
Looked like a great adventure
Yup! Thanks Paul 🙂
Love to see these kinda vids’ from you … epic ✌️🙏. Music is wicked too ✌️🙏🙏
Thanks Tom! 🙂 Spent a long time on the edit of this one
@@StephenJReid certainly paid off .. “Classic” … keep these comin’ ✌️🙏
Fantastic! So we'll done. Subscribed.
Thank you! One of my fav videos from the last year 🙂
Spectacular hiking route, definitely on my list, great footage as always pal, only done the pyg track myself, so definitely looking at this route 👍, gutted about losing your biscuit 😂
I hope someone or some animal enjoyed the biscuit, terrible end to a promising career 😂
@@StephenJReid 😂😂😂😂
@@StephenJReid tbh , it looks like a good wild camp, would you recommend this ?
Probably a few good spots along that route. Haven’t camped there myself so can’t speak from experience
Fantastic job Stephen.
Me and my border collie did this last September in roughly the same conditions. War of attrition.
Could have picked up Garnedd Ugain while you were up there, it’s only a short walk from where you met the Llanberis, Snowdon and Ranger path stone, and the second highest in Wales.
Thanks Benjamin, yeah should have planned that better on the summit, I was just fed up listening to the wind so didn’t hang about long.
First of you're videos I have watched, glad I did...stabby, stabby, stabby 😂
😁🤪 Glad you enjoyed it! Stabbing not guaranteed in all videos
Thanks for making me wet my pants…several times. I now you made it…unless your widow did the editing-but my lizard brain was screaming “Danger-Will Robinson”
Haha! Apologies to your washing machine 😂
Stunning views 👌
Thanks Nick! 🙂
Hello Friend. My Partner and I shall be Climbing Snowdon again along two new routes of which your Video shows.
Great Video, Well matched Music and Narration. I found myself Giggling at and with your sense of humour. "Giggled A number of times I mite add" The Tent on the track, when you looked inside and wretched at the rotting food inside was Priceless LOL Kind Regards From Mark.
Thumbs up and Subscribed.
P.S I would Genuinely be a pleasure to meet yourself and others who have kindly produced these videos.
Who knows We may meet whilst climbing Snowdon one Day.
I shall be in the area Late June and Climbing.
Thanks very much Mark, glad you enjoyed it! 🙂 I might be back in Wales this year but not until Huly
@@StephenJReid Keep in Touch Stephen. No Pressure just saying. Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Rhyd Ddu is a definite favourite route of mine, you really captured its beauty in this video!! Tip for next time you go up Snowdon is to include the Y Lliwedd!
Thanks Tanya 🙂 suppose I could do Crib Coch and Y Lliwedd as a horseshoe, is that a common route? Maybe when the weather is better and I can actually see something up there!
@@StephenJReid yeah that’s my preferred route! Start on crib goch, pass the summit and come back down Y Lliwedd, especially on a clear day it’s stunning!
I really enjoyed your video ☺️🫶🏻
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing Stephen, have to tackle Wales one of these days. Great to see an appearance by Grogu too 😊
.
Grogu was in the video?!!!
@@StephenJReid I saw him at 12:05. Do I win the Durston X-Mid Pro for finding him? ;-)
😂
Looks lovely up there. shame about the biscuit!
Still feel sad about that biscuit
The climb was strong with this one 😂
this is the way 😁
Your videos are amazing !!
Thanks Bill! 🙂
Im sure it is a lot of work - and btw I am heading to Ireland for first time since 2018 - will try at least one of those treks from your vids - but def will climb Croagh Patrick again.
Nice! I might be back in County Mayo this year, have a video or two planned
What a video! Will always wonder if someone went home and gave off because he was hit in the face by a digestive.
Haha 😂 I hope they enjoyed it! Because I didn’t
@@StephenJReid a hobnob and it would’ve been a fatality.
😂 The special forces of biscuits
Best route? No clue but seems like a dream hike. Great video as always and your edits are great.
Thanks!
Great video it’s so amazing there😊 can I ask do you use off line maps? If so which can you recommend? 😊
Thank you 🙂 I currently am using Hiiker which has offline maps. I’ll also carry paper map and a compass if I have one, but not always.
12 min in I saw yoda hovering in the distance, is that your gardian angle? Oh, it was something on my monitor, nevermind.
😂 you’re the first person to notice that 😂😂 it’s not actually Yoda though…
I thought that was Yoda too!😄
Thanks for posting, inspired me to climb Yr Wyddfa today via Rhyd Ddu. Nice early start, and a glorious path. Diolch 🏴⛰️👍
Great quality video mate. Mind sharing your camera and LUTs used?
I think I shot most of it on a GoPro, with some shots from insta360 1 inch & DJI mini 3 drone no LUT, was a manual colour grade
Me and my friend climes on the 30th of April, the wether was absolutely awful and rained really heavy which made it such a hard climb .. but would defo recommend it was such an amazing experience
Always hit or miss with the weather that time of year!
Great video as slways. How are the trousers? Do they get sweaty?
That looked like a great route, I’ve only done pyg and miners, shame no views at the summit because they’re spectacular.
Thanks David. Yeah I held off a few days and this was the best weather all week
Fireman Sam was Welsh? 😲
In Slovenia he was known as Gasilec Samo (which is a literal translation🙂) but never knew the Welsh connection🤯
Yup! Very Welsh. That's cool to know it was being shown in Slovenia too!
Going up is fantastic going down is a killer 🤣
Loved the video ❤
Thanks Alan! 🙂 you been up Snowdon?
Waiting for my first wild camp this summer, was a scout back in the day and venturing out again. Love watching because it's igniting a passion I loved when I was a young lad. Thank you.🙏💖
Wish I’d been in the scouts when I was younger. Camped a bit but was always just in friends gardens or nearby fields.
The scouts saw me through tough times when I was older and with mental health issues and here I am now going out into the wilderness again. A friend I'm working with receiving acupuncture to defeat my smoking habit and I'm a year off alcohol has recommended that I buy the gear and just hit the Wicklow mountains. I will admit I'm little nervous but the likes of yourself has been a real eye opener for me. Thank you.💖🙏
@Alan Robertson congrats and keep at it! That’s a battle a lot are fighting. Definitely get out there again if you can!
I’m a new subscriber to ur channel bro I came across ur channel wen I came across ur short of the wee dude climbing the 7peaks for his bro
Hey Chris, thanks for subscribing! 🙂
@@StephenJReid your welcome buddy love the content and ur editing skills are incredible
Almost mist little yoda😂
😁😁
I went there back in 2016
Omg yes, thank you. I feel the same way about the moon and Mars, sure it’s cool, but spending zillions of money to get a RC vehicle there....
Look at where you are, absolutely beautiful, amazing, epic and....it’s much easier to get to (comparatively).
New subscriber here… THAT WAS FUCKIN EPIC 👌👌👌👌 absolutely loved it 💯 %. The cinematography was amazing, felt like I was watching one of those TV programs on TV channels .
Thanks so much! Was very happy with this video. Should you check out my Dinorwic Quarry video
@@StephenJReid check that out tonight. Definitely will walk ten RHYD DDU path next time I head to snowdon
Have you done the West highland way?
Amazing video Stephen! :) I've never gone on a hike before but me and my friends are going up on the same path at the beginning of September. Do you recommend a hat and gloves in September?
Thanks! 🙂 Yeah definitely bring a hat and gloves. Sept can be unpredictable. Check a mountain forecast before you go as well. It could be warm and sweaty and the start but sub zero wind chill on the summit. I’ve gone from 5C at the start of a hike to experiencing 15C wind chill on the summit.
@@StephenJReid Thank you for your reply :) perfect! I'll make sure to bring a hat and gloves!
Thoroughly enjoyed that video Stephen! Excellent piece of work! :-)
But why Yoda?
Thanks! Haha, was curious to see who would notice
@@StephenJReid So not even as a symbol for your struggle up a steep mountain against muscle strain, all the bad weather, high winds and escaping biscuits?
@@pixelpeter3883 uh yes exactly that! 🤣
@@StephenJReid I knew it!! There HAD to be a deeper meaning!! ;-P

I have no idea what you are talking about 😛
Hello, me and my friends are aiming to do this route in February, we dont have the most experience, would you still recommend it.😅
Yeah it’s a great route, just be careful to check the forecast. Might not be one for a really windy day.

@@StephenJReid where u making one yesterday
Do you think the ridge is safe enough to bring a dog across?
I’ve seen dogs going across worse. But very much depends on dog and owner. I saw a dog on striding edge a couple of years ago and it’s a proper knife edge in places
@@StephenJReidthanks for the reply! Should be okay as long as it’s wide enough for me and my German shepherd
What would be the safest route with a dog?
@@specialk4519 the absolutely safest route is probably The Llanberis Path
