    I have to agree with everything said here. I use Safari almost exclusively and enjoy the password synchronization or just general ease of use. On rare occasions I may fire up Chrome to work around a web site that doesn't work well in Safari -- usually the web developer was lazy and never tested their site against Safari. In fact, I will sometimes use Safari to access a service that has an app if the service has both web and app access, just because the web portal exposes more features than the app.

    When I switched from linux to macOS a few years ago I made a point to stick with the stock apps as much as possible and am glad I did. At first, Safari was a problem since the majority of ad blockers available for it are terrible at blocking ads at best, and I suspect nefarious at worst. Wipr is the only one that works well (including blocking UA-cam ads....sorry!). That said, for work I use MS Edge browser. Microsoft web apps, which is what my employer uses, as well as lots of other SaaS apps, do not work well with Safari or non-chrome browsers. But for regular browsing - Safari all day. Only problem I find with it is that my credit union uses a 3rd party d bill pay service, so I have to temporarily disable cross-site tracking to get that frame to load. Minor inconvenience. Honestly, I don't understand why people would buy mac hardware just to install Chrome/Firefox, Microsoft Office, etc. on it. While Apple hardware is clearly better than anything else out there for the price, if I wanted to run non-Apple software primarily then I'd just go back to linux and use commodity hardware.

      The big appeal to using a non-safari web browser on a Mac would probably be cross compatibility. If you’re switching between windows, Linux, and macOS occasionally it helps to have a cross platform browser like Firefox. It allows for syncing of passwords and bookmarks. If you’re only using macOS and an iPhone, I could see a desire to use Safari.

    • @Manuel-rl6um
      @Manuel-rl6um 9 днів тому

      There are MANY reasons why one would want to run non-Apple software in an Apple device.
      - Privacy: Brave by default or Firefox well configured are more private than Safari can ever be
      - Ad blocking: uBlock Origin blocks ads before they showed while in Safari they are hidden but were loaded by the network
      - Cross-platform: Safari only runs in Apple devices. If you use Windows, Android tablet or phones as well as your Apple devices, you have better cross-platform experience with Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.
      - Open source: If you prefer to use open source software such as Firefox. Safari is closed source.
      - Compartmentalise/Containerisation: If you prefer to have different browsers for different purposes, be it for organisation, privacy or security.

    • @LearnAtMyExpense
      @LearnAtMyExpense 9 днів тому

      @@Manuel-rl6um based on your use case you should be running linux. While you might want to run it on the better hardware that Apple provides, it's not worth the hassle IMO. Linux is simply a better OS for all of those things you want to do primarily on a computer. If the majority of my browsing or things I did on my computer were, and privacy was a major concern, then linux is the only choice.

    • @Manuel-rl6um
      @Manuel-rl6um 9 днів тому

      @@LearnAtMyExpense it's not my use case. But I see why other people might want to use non-Apple software with Apple hardware.
      Regardless, you don't have to use Linux to have privacy. Privacy is a spectrum, it's not all or nothing. You don't have to have a Pixel with GrapheneOS to have privacy, you can still have some privacy with Apple hardware + software or Apple hardware + 3rd party software. Heck, if you love Google software, you still can benefit from configuring Chrome and Google software to collect less data, no ads, etc etc.
      Then there is the cross-platform.
      There are people that prefer iPhone but uses Windows as their main desktop OS for work or gaming.
      There are other people that prefer Android phones but use MacOS because of their M processor, build quality or whatever reason. These people will benefit from using software that can be used regardless of their platform of choice.
      You might also value Open Source software at all but really love Apple hardware. And use open source software with Apple hardware. Why not? Who can tell these people they should go all in into Apple walled garden or else go somewhere else?
      That's my honest opinion.

    As a web developer I can just say: PLEASE use Chrome! The amount of stupid Safari bugs I have to fix every day is insane. OR if you're using Safari please don't be suprised when websites don't work as expected

    • @tuvu8394
      @tuvu8394 13 днів тому +1

    • @randomtimessomehow
      @randomtimessomehow 13 днів тому

      @@tuvu8394 Yes, that's true, and I make sure all my websites are compatible with Safari, but you have no idea how painful it can be. Even with all the testing I do, sometimes a bug slips through. From a user perspective, I wouldn't recommend Safari to anyone because you'll occasionally encounter issues that only happen in Safari. I'm fortunate to use a Mac, so I can test it natively within Safari, but many web developers don't have that option. That leaves them with two choices: 1) Skip testing their website in Safari (which many developers do), or 2) Pay $100 per month for a testing tool.

    I wish I could use Safari since I like its look so much more than Chrome's. Unfortunately, a third-party Chrome is better optimized for MacOS than Apple's own browser. I'll repeat this unbelievable statement. Chrome is better optimized for Mac (!). I witnessed multiple times Safari failing to recognize MacOS's own text replacement templates while on Chome (on the very same websites) they work 100% of the time. It's ridiculous. And if you leave some tabs open for a while on Safari, in about 30-40 minutes they start bloating the RAM, memory pressure becomes yellow, then red, then it's time to reboot. :) Chrome keeps tabs consuming as little memory as a website's content allows and the memory pressure never leaves the green zone.

    I've never understood point about Safari 'lean' memory consumption.
    1) Don't know why, but actually it is significant! Each tab (especially 'heavy' like UA-cam) eats ~ 1gig of RAM while Chrome about 200 mibs.
    2) Cache! Even when i've turned it off in developer mode, cache on each tab is enormous. And only one way to clean it - explicitly click cmd+opt+E.
