100% He's playing a Boer South African - (Boer being the Afrikaans word for farmer and used to describe the people in SA who trace their ancestry to Dutch, German and French Huguenot settlers) - typically, they are unashamedly racist and speak their mind with NO FILTER. So why the chemist's character is 'spot on'.
Joel, the accent is White South African. Specifically, ‘Boer/Afrikans’, which is Dutch accented English. Many White South African professional can to live in the UK, after the end of Apartheid in 1991. They were previously part of the British Empire, and South Africa remains part of the Commonwealth of Nations. This Chemist character of Harry Enfield is supposed to be one on them. Boers/Afrikans are noted for their ‘directness’ and being ‘unfiltered’ in saying what they think. Even more so then the Australians. Which is the premise of these comedy sketched. Boers: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boers
No. It's a caricature of an Afrikaans accent, largely accurate, though. "Boer" was a thing in the 19th century. I know it's difficult for someone from neither language group to grasp the difference, but a Dutch accent is completely different. The Dutch are more numerous than Afrikaners, so it's very likely that you've actually heard Dutch people speak. They don't sound like that.
Joel, PLEASE watch Harry Enfield in the American Tourists sketches: you’ll love them as you did his ‘Women, know your limits’ sketch. I still watch your reaction to that because it always makes me laugh.😂
Hi JPS if you've moved onto Harry Enfield you have to check out Wayne & Waynetta Slob. And the Old Gits they are hilarious also Tim nice but Dim Harry's accent in this sketch is south African or Afrikaans
This is just one example why Brit humour is the best in the world not so much now though as it's become very woke and PC but back then anything went! ... this is bloody hilarious!
His accent is white South African (Boer/Afrikaner). I've heard it said that they say what's on their mind and right in your face too. That's the whole premise of this character.
Deffo a Saffa accent - I lived there for 27 years, and can do a pretty good one myself. @JP - comedian's name is pronounced Harry ENN-field (N-field), rather than EinfieldArnfield. Enfield is also a town close to London, and a well known army rifle (Lee Enfield .303, just called an Enfield) Harry Enfield has used the same accent for a different character, the dumb jock fitness instructor. Enfield's collaborations with Paul Whitehouse are legendary. See the series Harry and Paul.
Have you still not reacted to (Kevin and Perry go large) movie yet ? It’s a British classic think you’ll love it. You can tell inbetweenrs took inspiration from it
My local chemist in the '90s was South African, but he was definitely far more discreet than Harry Enfield's character. Also have a look at some videos of Caroline Aherne where she plays a checkout girl in 'The Fast Show'.
Hey Joel, when I finally get around to sending you stuff to your PO Box I was going to send some of the shows not that easy to find on UA-cam that I have digitally, Harry Enfield being one of them so you can enjoy all of his material. As others have said Wayne and Waynetta Slob, the Old Gits and the Scousers are firm favourites of mine.
The Dick Emery show is also well worth watching. Everyone in the UK watched Dick Emery on a Saturday evening in the 70s and 80s. The sketch with Hettie breaking into prison, is a classic.
Yes,very similar to the randy naughty old ladies, that Enfield and Kathy Burke used to do OOOOOOOOOO YOUNG MAN YOUNG MAN YOUNG MAN AT OUR AGE AT YOUR AGE YOUNG MAN YOU SAUCY DEVIL YOU 😂😂
I love Harry Enfields stuff. Shame about copyright. But if you haven't seen it you should watch his sketch with Ronnie Corbett. It's hilarious I know someone else has reacted to it.
Joel harry Enfields accent is south Africans Really guttrel thick Africkans it's what makes it even funnier uncouth no filter calls a spade aspade.people are more sensitive these days but you did get the odd one person having no social guard up.
Joel, please watch Harry Enfield and Chums - the Lovely, Wobbly, Randy Old Ladies (especially the visit from the gas repair man). Also, the Women of Britain, Know Your Place, sketch.
The accent is South African. A lot of White South Africans were known to be racists. What Harry Enfield's done, is exaggerate the accent for comedic purposes 😂😂
Hello Joel. I never saw this before, which reminds me of a Spitting Image song, with his accent being South African. I think you did too much German, saying "Ein"? You need to try some other countries on MoreJPS and start a German channel. Have you ever seen comedy sketch "Air Afrikaans"? You might also like "Yorkshire Airlines" from your love of York?
Its not right to say its an South African accent. That's what black people from the area speak. But the whites there speak Afrikaans. Boer, the dutch and so on.
His accent is a thick South African ( Boer) 😊
Or others
His character name is Vanderbilt which confirms

I had a look through the comments and I don't think anybody's mentioned that it's a South African accent. 😁
I wish more Americans would discover this one!
Takes me back to the 90s. Sadly, many brits are easily offended these days, so this humour just isn't screened on TV
I dont think its the brits
Good reaction to an hilarious sketch from Harry EN FIELD, there is no "I" at the beginning of his Surname:)
Harry has been making me laugh since the late 1980s. Great comedian
"Hallo, everybody Peeps, Stavros Here" :)
I’ve got South African friends EXACTLY the same - no filter at all! 🤣

I’m from the UK and have watched quite a bit of Harry Enfield but never seen these chemist clips, hilarious 😂
I mean, Chemists have to be polite to sustain a clientele but there are some who have chronic Foot in the mouth disease 😂
South Africans are well known for their tactful manner. (that may not be strictly true)
He's doing a South African accent. The pronunciation features that survive are mainly those from southeast England with distinct Cockney associations.
Has the Dutch accent. The Dutch are known for being brutally honest.
Harry Enfield so under rated
it's pronounced "en field" as in the letter N and the world Field.
I love Harry Enfields stuff. Shame about copyright. But if you haven't seen it you should watch his sketch with Ronnie Corbett. It's hilarious I know someone else has reacted to it.
