KC-135 Engine Run

- Our A-Model tanker required a replacement P&W J57 Turbojet on the #4 while we were TDY at Eglin AFB. It took a week for the engine to arrive from Wurtsmith AFB. The Crew Chief's were performing an engine run, and we departed back to base that night.

I worked on these 1976 Water Injection, Alert Facility Very Loud when 7 of them take off.
Yeah, I appreciate just about anything with a jet engine, lol. I vaguely recall, having problems attaining T/O EPR, so the maintenance professionals were definitely injecting water during these runs.
I love the howl of J57s. Is the water streaming out the bottom of the engine from the water injection?
I remember her from Tanker Phase at Wurtsmith. I was the sister ship, 3633 "Stone Age Mutant Ninja Tanker" to Plattsburgh AFB.
Thank you for your comments Chris. We took 3633 on PTTF '91, and had a great TDY that summer; staging from Kadena, and got a good weekend deal to Clark AB. Mt. Pinatubo erupted roughly a month after departing.

Thanks for responding. However, a couple of questions: First, by 1991, I don't think the KC-135 still used J-57s and water injection, I think the J-3 was already operational on our tankers. Second: Even without water injection, TRT with the straight J-57 jet engine was VERY loud! Dan
Thanks for your insight and inquiry Dan. The civilian JT3 / military TF-33 engine was in fact utilized by the Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve units as you reference. However, sadly, the northern tier active duty tankers still had the J-57's as the BRAC closed Wurtsmith AFB in June 1993. I believe you are citing the engine specifications of the KC-135E model. You can see the residual water leaking from the KC-135A J-57 engines upon completion of the run. As to the level of jet noise, I appreciated the substantial reduction in jet noise of the CFM-56 in the KC-135R.
I see that 2-4 eng check list was followed to the tee ! Maybe not see the pressure door on the cargo in the open position ! Retired sac master crew chief old school . Kc135 Q-A-EC---RC-and E Model best plane ever made by Billy's Boeing ✈️🇺🇸
