- DIY change your Onan Generator fuel pump and filter with this easy to follow video.
A detailed description saving you lots of time and money, giving you the confidence to DIY your RV and change the Generator fuel pump and filter with ease. #rvlife #generator #rvrepairs
Thank you for the great step-by-step video. You are an excellent instructor, and there are lots of little hints & tricks shown. The little humorous clips injected are a nice touch. No background music is appreciated. (western Canada)
Glad it was helpful! and thanks for the kind words
Thank you for NOT playing background music over your instructional video!!!
Amen
I am a 62 years young, ex-pat now living in Nova Scotia, Canada who took on this challenge after spending $800 + for a company to service the generator. They fixed a ground wire and explained the Gen ran perfectly using an independent fuel source. Their advice, get a gas container or use the MH as a glorified tent. 🤨
New fuel pump and filter cost less than $100 cdn, plus my time! I thank you so much for giving me the confidence to replace the old fuel pump and filter. She now works just fine, I am so proud of my achievement.
Thanks again😃
That’s great to hear and thank you for sharing your comments. I can’t believe the service shop would suggest that you use a can of fuel 🤯
Im 68 , sometimes i realize i know more than most RV mechanics. Not a slam to them , but just acknowledging experience. Good on ya man!
I have been having trouble with keeping my Onan Microquiet 4000 running and after changing the oil and the air filter decided to give changing the fuel filter and while I was at it, pump a try. I followed this video. It was a perfect instructional video, giving tips along the way and spoke to me in practical, meaningful ways. It was a success. My generator is now purring along. Thank you.
Only a good Limey could put out a video as simply explained as this one... 10 out of ten mate
HaHa thank you sir...
Replaced my pump/filter today, your video was key in helping me get through it. Many...many thanks!
This video is still the best for replacing the fuel pump and filter. Well done and thank you.
Thank you, Jason Statham! I was able to change it out.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your detailed instructions on how to troubleshoot the Microquiet 4000 generator. It got me going without taking it to a shop.
Glad it was helpful and thanks for the comment
This is an excellent video! You brought a lot of humor and know how to a tedious process. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the comment
Sitting here in my home office in Florida, watching these excellent Richie How-To's this morning. I'd already watched the video on dropping the entire generator and replacing the starter. I'll be doing that i decided, then I watched this video. I figure while I'm at it, i might as well as replace the fuel pump and filter too. I've got 600 hours on the generator and i doubt it's ever been replaced. (bought the RV recently, used). So why not? Thanks Richie. Great work.
Glad to hear it will give you the push to try it, and the where to go to if you need more info.
Best to you
Best "how-to" I've seen. I'm the worst mechanic but i think i can do this. Thanks to your video i feel much more confident going forward.
I'm happy to hear that, thanks for the comment
Actually, I'm the worst mechanic....but Richie's videos give me the confidence to try!
@@rvknowhow what I've learned about rv ownership so far is that there's a lot more to know about rv ownership than just being able to drive one or pull one.
I'm a 1960's era military veteran.
The so called "preventative maintenance program" was ingrained.
I am somewhat handy, so I watched this video and gave it a go. Outstanding step by step guide. The generator fired up immediately and fixed the fuel issue. Highly recommend this video.
Thank you so much for the video. Gave me the confidence that I needed to do the job. After replacing the pump I couldn’t get the regulator board back in. Watching the video again I saw how your wires were routed. Put it back together based on that ,and success. Runs great. Your video gets a 10 from me!!
Glad it helped Thanks for the comment
Great video, and I’m glad I’m not the only one that gets my nuts and bolts confused when talking.
You and me both!
After watching your video I ordered everything to do a complete maintenance on the generator. Knowing ahead of time what’s involved is a great relief!! Thanks for the good information!
Great to hear, we are happy it was helpful and thanks for the comment
Great video. I went step farther and relocated the filter and pump. Just so be a lot easier the next time. Thank You
Glad it helped and nice upgrade you have made
Thank you. I appreciate the detail with hooking up wires. Much appreciated.
That was really well done. I watch videos like this a lot and this may be the best I’ve seen. Never would have expected it from a Pommie. Glad you’ve escaped.
Thanks! 👍
update: Yes, this is an awesome video that shows you step by step what to do. I tried it today and let me tell you it is definitely not as easy as it looks in this video. He just puts in his screw driver and off comes the part he targets.. Well, I spent several hours today trying to get each screw off of each piece I needed to take off. Every single nut or screw that needed to come out was a fight. Had to to go the store several times to adjust what I was using. The selenoid screw did not just come off using the half inch wrench. I had to go get a socket wrench. The they weren't long enough so had to go back to the store to get the long sockets. I also had to use penetrating oil to help loosen the screws. Finally after getting everything out except the actual fuel pump, I have one last screw that holds the pump down that I absolutely can not get loose. So I"m taking it in to an RV shop to see if someone there can at least help get that screw out. I'm hoping it's not stripped. Just know while this video makes it looks almost easy and do able for us non-mechanic types, it is anything but easy. I'm hoping tomorrow will be a better day and someone can get the screw out that holds down the fuel pump. If not, I'll have to pay the big bucks and keep my appt. at the generator shop at $210/hr.
Thanks for the great video!
Be patient with these things Tina, and wd40 and or penetrating fluid on the nuts and bolts can be a life saver, ha and or a lot of $$ savings.
I had the exact same experience with my Onan 4000 MicroQuiet Tina. It was the bolt holding the solenoid to the mounting plate that gave me the most trouble. On many of the bolts the heads just sheared off and I had to drill them out. I think that solenoid bolt might have been made of Kryptonite, nothing I seemed to do worked. I can't tell you how many drill bits I broke!!!! I finally had to go buy a Extreme Metal cutting blade for my oscillating saw to cut the nut side of the bolt free. But it finally came free. So don't give up hope. You can do it!!!!
Perfect step by step video, now if I just had tiny hands! On a separate note, absolutely criminal what Cummins/Onan asks for the fuel pump. I found one of the higher quality knockoffs and it works perfectly for a fraction of the Onan one.
Thanks for the comment and yes they are pricey, I usually go with an after market pump also
Great video. Changed my pump and filter out today and this video made it very simple with the step by step process you went through. Thanks for the assist!
Thanks for this m8. About to go out and throw my mother’s genny together finally. She’s lucky I speak limey.
Thank you and good luck with it
thanks man i have head the same problem generator runn for about 25min and shut off thanks to your instructions i found gas was not running after it shut off (before it shut off it ran) i could not find a fuel pump at the local rv shop went to napa autoparts they had a low pressure fuel pump replaced the fuel pump now it wotks awesome thanks again
That's great, I'm happy to hear it helped. Thanks for the comment
EXCEPTIONAL video 😊😊😊
No BS just straight forward how to video...
Absolutely the best at explaining how to do the job....
Thanks 😊 😊😊😊
Thank you for the comment and kind words
Excellent write up. I will add, at 8:40 take the plug that you removed from the fuel pump and use it as a cap on the barbed end of the fuel filter to keep debris from entering the filter before you put the fuel line back on.
I startedd replacing and got (FLUMMUXED) I came into the house and watched your video (You're a Life Saver) Thanks TONS!
Glad it helped! Thanks
Your video helped me with an unexpected issue repair. The fuel pump wasn’t working so I expected it to need to be replaced however I went in thinking the possibility that the ground had come loose. As it turns out, I was wrong but on the right track. The POWER supply wire o the pump had corroded and disconnected. We use our 2020 Leprechaun to travel year round up in Alaska and through Canada and it leaves the camper exposed to lots of unexpected corrosion. Anyway, that for making the video.
Well done! After seeing all that and thinking I would just replace the filter, I think I will replace the pump also.
An excellent explanation & visual. Well done.
Many thanks!
Great video! I was going to call an RV tech out that wanted to charge me $200 without parts. did it myself in half hour with no problems after watching your video.
And I'm not mechanically inclined!! Thanks again!
Thanks for the comment, I'm happy to hear this video helped.
Thank you for another fine video. I sure would like Onan to have made a easier way to change out the fuel pump and filter. Reminds me of how jet fighters are built and that is not for easy maintenance.
This is how I fixed mine. In the case of:
"I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR"
It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen (it won't start if low oil becouse of sensores), gasoline more than 1\4 tank in my RV (also safety censors), sparkplug checked for good spark, check the manual circuit braker (ON) at front RV engine compartment for current, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed by rats so I replaced them, by this time it started but stay runing only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so I knew it was electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, ( I did this by myself with some tools and old tricks) it's really heavy for one person.
I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one unit) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats.
Then I assembled everything back together and bingo it's runing like a champion.
For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel).
Just picture this: (Eny engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed.
Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover becouse you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding.
After testing the gen then put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover and done!!!
If this can help eaven one person save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!
Thanks for your video, I really appreciate your help, as I've been trying to replace the fuel filter for the past 3 hours with no success, so now I know I'm going through the front.
Great to heard ....glad it is helping. Keep plugging away. I can answer questions is you come to a holt again. Thanks for you positive feedback as i hope that the video gets you through step by step.
Good luck
Thank you, your video helped me greatly. I was able to replace my fuel pump and filter. Thank you so much.
Great news and thanks for the comment
very good video . I have a crazy gas filter on my 2007 RV , I just got . It is on the frame , maybe for the RV but close to the Generator .
Thanks for the video! Didn’t even have to watch the whole thing and I sad I got this!
No problem and thanks for the comment
Great stuff mate. We are an Aussie couple touring USA. Just got a motor home, and I think your video is super helpful. Oh and we speak the same language…. sort of lol
Spanners mate…. Love it.
Welcome to the USA tour and thanks for the comment. Glad to hear the video was helpful.
Your videos are awesome ! I fixed my generator with your help ! You rule
Super Video ! Also appreciate the British Humor! Cheers mate!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks
Great video, I loved the commentary. If you put a little grease in the hole where you put the Torx bit it will help hold the bolt to the Torx bit to make it easier to install it.
Really great step by step instructions 👍👍👍 right on!
Glad it was helpful! and thanks for the comment
Very good.Really like your videos, easy to understand.
Big thumbs up! I think I can do that! Ordered parts and waiting. I just hope this fixes the problem of running well then shuts off after about 20 minutes when cold start.
Did it fix your problem?
@@BlazeDowis yes, changed filter and fuel pump. Running good now.
That's exactly what I need to do to mine. Thanks for the lesson!
Glad to helped
Just happened across your channel from FB, great videos. Hope you keep them coming.
Thank you, yes lots more to come on a regular basis.
Howdy howdy from Elko NV. usa: Just a thought but if you use a very small pc of two sided tape to hold the srew to the T-30, you wont lose the screw. Just a thought I'e been doing it this way for years with everything from gum to clay to a very weak adhisive. Have a great day- Dave blunt by the by a GREAT video all round
Thank you Richie. Great video. Thank you for doing this. It made me comfortable in doing the work myself.
Excellent, I'm glad it was helpful and thanks for the comment
@@rvknowhow Do upu really have to change the fuel pump every 100 hours ? Thought that was just the oil itself .
excellent demo ,thank you
Glad it was helpful and thanks for the comment
I rerouted/mounted the pump and filter to the outside of the genny , quick replacement now.
Nice video Sir. I just got one of these things and this is VERY valuable. Thank you.
Really nice video! Thank you!
Great video! Thanks mate!!
About to do a filter and pump replacement, you made it look simple! In reading the comments of others I see a couple relocated the pump and filter "for easy replacement" in the future. Does anyone have a picture of where you relocated it?
Awesome video...very entertaining, too.
Thanks!
Hey thank you was a great video, it answered my questions why my generator won’t start, I think either not enough gas in my toy hauler
I know it’s level coz it has a glass level , so I think it could also be the fuel pump
Thanks bro
Hi, glad it was helpful and thanks for the comment.
This is a excellent video I can do this now thnaks to RV knowhow team thanks my brit brother
Great news i'm happy to hear it helped you out, thanks for the comment.
Awesome and very helpful! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
It has been easy way for you to get the control board out. My wires is so short, and it's a struggle to disconnect/connect the harness.
The monkey gave me a start! Lol
Thanks mate.
You make it look sorta easy? I just found out I need a new fuel filter on my Onan generator for my 2004 Minnie. I don't know though. Sounds and looks like a lot of little things to remember which my memory is not so good and I am definitely not a mechanic, so a bit hesitant to try this myself. But the local shop wants $210/hr to take a look at it and try to fix it. Ugh! I also just watched another video from someone else and yours is way better because you showed step by step what to do from start to finish. Thanks
How all “how to” videos should be done, detailed and to the point
Thank you for the kind words
Hi! There! Thanks for great video. Mine starts and run for 3-4 minutes then shuts off. What do you think the issue is. Much appreciated!!
Excellent educational video and funny !
Thank you for the step by step explanation. I get fuel into my 4000 when I use a gal jerry can right below it but when it's connected to the Ford 450 fuel tank it is starved - no fuel getting to the carb. So I assume it's either the fuel line has a crack or the pump is too weak to pull it from the vehicle tank but not too weak to pull it from a can foot away. Does that ever happen? To test the line I used a small bulb syphon and successfully sucked fuel through it but it ran for about 1 min then it stopped and sounded like it was starved again. So I'm going with the pump replacement fix rather than a new fuel line. Am I overlooking anything? Does this make sense?
Thanks for comment Steve. Yes I would think the fuel pump is weak if you can get fuel down the line without the pump. Probably a good idea to do the filter at the same time as they are attached together.
Where can we buy the parts? Any specific name beside fuel pump and filter? Thank you great video
Great instructions. May have to leave this job for the professionals on my rig.
Thanks for your feedback John, Do you have a more complex Generator ?
Thanks Mate!
You're welcome!
Jus nip it up! Love it.
You better know how to fix everything on an RV! I saw your comment that you rent them out.
Question, Can you change just the filter through the hole? Can you remove the air cleaner housing and then change the pump and filter?
Best wishes, Kevin
Hi Kevin. Yes if you only wish to change to the filter just remove the oval rubber grommet and the filter will unscrew. Honestly I have never tried to change the pump by removing the air filter housing, problems i foresee would be the earth cable and the live wire are located under the ECU so unless you cut them and rejoin its probably easier to remove the ECU.
Hope this helps
Thanks Richie
I started watching your videos to repair my friend's widow's Sunseeker 2850 so she could sell it. Found the fuel cut off switch on the bottom of the carb was bad. Saw your instructions on replacing the fuel pump and filter and decided to do that! Thank you so much! I have a concern though. The fuel line going into the filter is rock hard. It doesn’t flex. It's a 2002 unit. How do I replace the fuel line? It goes up into the floor above the generator. Help is very much appreciated!
That’s unusual that it would go up into the floor above the generator. Normally it just heads along the chassis rail to the top of the fuel tank.
I was able to remove the fuel filter from the bottom/outside. The only hard part was getting the threads to line up when installing the new one. I wasn’t replacing the fuel pump though.
My fuel pump runs intermittently. I ordered a new pump just in case, but I suspect it's loose wiring to the pump. Has anyone seen this? Thank you for the video, it's very helpful in knowing exactly how to access the fuel pump - it's impossible to see from the service manual / diagrams online.
Great video. I liked your step by step approach without making me sit through your whole life story. So many how to videos drag on but I did like the interjections of humorous clips.
We’ll done.
One question though, did you recommend replacing your filter AND PUMP every 100 hours?
Hi and thanks for the comment, not so much a recommendation but just changed them often because we rented the RVs and didn’t want any issues for our customers
@@rvknowhow Understood. We use ours all winter in Alaska and the road crud eats up all of the connections. We’re having issues with our fuel pump so I’m going to first check that ground wire to make sure that hasn’t corroded off. The wires to the heating pads and solar panels had corroded completely off so that’s the most logical step.
In house inverted blew a fuse. Have two problems solved. Thank you.
I replaced the filter and the fuel pump on my Onan 4000 generator couple weeks ago. Fuel tank on my motorhome was below a quarter so I used a 1-gallon jug of gas at the intake to the fuel filter to check and make sure everything was running. It ran great! Today I went and filled up the gas tank on my motorhome. There is no fuel being drawn from the tank to the engine now. I checked all of the fuel line from the engine back to the gas tank. Is there a quicker way than trying to start the engine with an empty gas line in order to get gas to the generator?
Hi, do you mean the generator won’t start or the engine on the RV won’t start ?
Do you have a video on how to replace that fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb? Seems like it'd be a simple process.
Are you Jason Stathams brother? Cousin? lol You could be. HEY, go to a club and say "Don't you know who I am?" when they won't let you in. lol
Like your videos and I love his movies. Well, not so much the English movies where I can only understand about half of what he says.
I'm like a triple cousin, once removed😎
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Brand new RV (1 year old) and after a winter the gennie would start but would not stay on long. Figured it was a bad pump. I got the pump installed and thought I connected everything correctly but now the generator has no power. No priming, crank, zero power. I tested with a multi-meter that 12v if getting to the solenoid. Thinking maybe I have a ground issue. I took off the ground wire and sanded them down for good contact. Any idea what May be wrong and anything I can try or test next? Breaker on the generator is towards the outside. Possible that the solenoid is bad. It’s a brand new RV. Sorry for the long winded comment but looking for any help. Thanks
Hi Vincent, Sorry to hear of your troubles. My first guess would be the solenoid, You mention that you have a good ground and there is 12v to the solenoid but you need to check that 12v is coming from the other side of the solenoid when cranking, check that first and let me know. Thanks Richie
@@rvknowhow thanks Richie. Not getting 12v on the starter side when cranking. I’m going to change out the solenoid and try that next.
Hi Richie, changed the solenoid and no luck. It look like I’m getting 6.7 or so volts on the solenoid on the starter side but still no start/crank, nothing.
Tried to jump from the battery directly to the starter side of the solenoid. Guessing I either have a wiring or ground issue or the starter is bad. Brand new RV with 20 hrs on it. I think i need to bring to an expert at this point unless you have any other advice of simple things to try next.
Should the fuel pump ever make a knocking sound? Mine does when I first hit the prime button.
The pump might make a knocking sound while it is building fuel pressure.
Do you need to use OEM (ONAN) replace parts? Can you use aftermarket parts?
Yes I use aftermarket parts for these pumps and filters
@@rvknowhow Thank you!
Thank you for the video. My generator is giving me the over crank code. How can I fix this?
Hi, Thanks, What model generator do you have ?
Do you have a link for the parts handy? The correct fuel pump and filter? I have the same generator.
Thanks for the comment, I haven't put a link in the description due to link expiring. I don't use the OEM parts for the pump and filter, not worth the extra cost in my opinion (other people may feel different of course) I usually buy from eBay or Amazon. Let me share my past purchase with you and see if it is still active
Why do you need to disconnect the house battery for and oil change?
Thanks for the reply, but this video is strictly for fuel pump and filter.
I will do one for oil change this week hopefully .
Update #2 Well, I was able to get it all set up and installed. It does work. But now for some reason, my electrical is not working with the generator running. Any idea what is causing that?
Hi Tina, I'm happy to hear you got the problems sorted in the end. Yes having access to the correct tools is helpful. If you have no power i would suggest it is probably the breaker on the generator has tripped and needs setting. I will send you a 2 minute video link to see if that works for you,
ua-cam.com/video/CSXSZgDiOKM/v-deo.html
Thanks. I found a video on it yesterday and that's what it was. I just didn't know where the switch was. Thank you.jeez one problem after another. My electrical is working now but now my side step only wants to go out half way. Omg!
Replaced fuel pump and two six volt house batteries on on an 7000 series. All appliances work when generator or outside power is supplied. When these two sources are removed there is no12 volt in house power. Control
Panel shows no indication of power. Can you help me?
Sorry to hear of your problems, the first thing i would check is to make sure the batteries are wired in series so they are producing 12v. If they are wired parallel they will still be 6v.
You change the fuel pump and or filter every 100 hours? Did I hear that right?
Hi, yep, because we rented the RV we figured a $50 replacement at home is cheaper than a $500 call out at an RV park.
After doing this I have no power to generator. Any suggestions ?
Hello, Assuming the battery is connected correctly the first thing to check would be the 12 volt supply to the solenoid, thats the thick red cable coming in?
Coming into the generator
Can put the link of where to buy the fuel pump, filter, and grease in the description?
Hi, yes I can, because I change them both every 100 hours I just replace them with aftermarket new parts, typically you can find these on ebay shops or amazon.
The fuel pump is as follows.
Fuel Pump for Onan 4000 RV Generator 4KW Microlite Quiet Cummins 12V E11007 CA.
The filter is as follows.
Cummins Onan 149-2457, Generator Fuel Filter.
And the sealer is from any good auto parts store.
make sure its fuel resistant
@@rvknowhow
The wire to the fuel pump is not hot. Need help to figure it out. Please?
Sorry to hear your problem, did you get it sorted out ?
2:22 - Why not clamp off the fuel line then start it to let it run that fuel out?
Good morning, Yes indeed that would be a good thing to do also.
Why do you replace the fuel pump every 100 hours?
Hi, because we rent the RV's out, and for the sake of $50 its piece of mind.
@@rvknowhow I took my brand new Onan 4K out west in the 100 plus degree weather and the fuel pump would quit so I wasn't sure if this was a common theme and you just swapped them out
Seems a bit much for 100 hours. I change oil every 100.
By the cost you state, you are not using an Onan pump which is ok with me. Way over priced. I assume you bought on Amazon. I bought a genuine filter.
Onan makes money selling you the same crap parts over and over again. Don't buy an Onan.
Thanks mate!
You're welcome!
