I found and listened to every version I could find, and I have a decent ear, being a performer for 20 years. Harvey Danger was, I'm pretty sure, the actual writer and first performer. It got famous from "American Pie", which is why it isn't connected as solidly as it should e to a band. Green day covered it a lot in concerts, and even did an MTV designed video. Maybe they bought rights.
