- Here is act one of the September 23, 2003 preview performance of the original Broadway production of "Little Shop of Horrors" at the Virginia Theatre in New York.
After the failed Florida try-out earlier in the year, the show was totally scrapped and reproduced from the ground up, with a new director (Jerry Zaks), new choreography, new set-design, and a new cast. Virtually the only element to survive the move to Broadway was the casting of Hunter Foster (fresh off of the musical URINETOWN) in the role of Seymour Krelborn. (Though, according to Foster in Stars in the House "Suddenly Seymours" live stream, he did have to re-audition for the role.)
The cast also features Trisha Jeffrey as Crystal, Carla J. Hargrove as Ronnette, DeQuina Moore as Chiffon, Kerry Butler as Audrey, and Rob Bartlet as Mushnik, as well as Douglas Sills as Orin (and others), Michael-Leon Wooley as the voice of Audrey II, and Martin P. Robinson, Anthony Asbury, Bill Remington, and Matt Vogel as puppeteers for Audrey II. - Розваги
I was lucky enough to see this production when it was on Broadway. It was really great, and I personally don't think it gets enough credit. I know it was criticized for being too big and overproduced, but I enjoyed it immensely. I especially enjoyed Kerry Butler's take on Audrey. No one can ever beat Ellen Greene, but Butler gave homage to Greene's version, while also making it her own. The plant puppets were also absolutely incredible, made by the Jim Henson Company. The last one, especially was HUGE and literally came into the audience in the final scene. Overall, just a really fun production that I'm glad I got to see.
In many ways, Little Shop of Horrors has always had some sort of connection to the Jim Henson Company:
1982 off-Broadway production: Audrey II puppets designed, built and operated by Martin P. Robinson (Telly Monster and Mr. Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street) with understudying by Anthony Asbury (Lionel from Between the Lions, various characters on The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, a show created by Jim Henson Productions)
1986 musical film: directed by Frank Oz, Audrey II designed by Lyle Conway (former Muppet builder who also worked on Jim Henson's Dark Crystal) and operated by puppeteers from The Empire Strikes Back, Dark Crystal, Return of the Jedi, Labyrinth, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit
2003 Broadway production/2004 national tour: Audrey II designed by Marty Robinson and built by the Jim Henson Company, Robinson assisted by Anthony Asbury, Matt Vogel (current performer of Kermit and Big Bird) and other puppeteers from Sesame Street
2006-2009 UK production: Audrey II operated by Andy Heath, Brian Herring and Iestyn Evans, all puppeteers on several Henson projects shot in the UK
2019 off-Broadway revival: Audrey II designed by Nicholas Mahon (briefly a puppet builder for Sesame Street), built by Monkey Boys Productions (staff includes Henson Company artists) and co-operated by Eric Wright (puppeteered on Sesame during season 46), additional cast includes Weston Chandler Long, Paul McGinnis (both ensemble Sesame puppeteers) and Noel MacNeal (AKA Bear in the Big Blue House).
That huge Audrey 2 puppet during the finale ultimo number is amazing!
I want to know how Martin P. Robinson and the other puppeteers made it possible like that on Broadway.

@@Joshua_Quinzel_Isley Apparently, a hydraulic lift was used to hold up the Audrey II puppet.
Everything you said is true!!
I never thought there would be another recording of the 2003 Broadway production to one of my all-time favorite musicals ever!
In fact, I never believed there would be a more higher quality recording of the show either, and I already love the Broadway show of Little Shop of Horrors.
The range of motion on Audrey II is incredible.
HE DID IT HIS JACKET DIDNT GET STUCK WOOOOO

Same boat as y’all
Kerry Butler is my favorite actress she KILLED this role👏👏👏 and Hunter Foster could definitely play Elder Cunningham 😂
THATS KERRY!? That explains why I loved her so much!
I am auditioning for Seymour at a local theatre and this has helped immensely. Thank you so much for this.
Awesome! Break a leg!
i absolutely love that high note. it's even more extra in the actual performance than it is on the recording. love it!
which one
Saw this production on Broadway and I thought it was good. Really good cast overall. And the plant was awesome!
Thanks for posting this. I actually went to see this on broadway. Can’t believe it’s been almost 20 years. It was a bitter/ sweet moment for me considering my previous visit to New York was before 9/11
No offense to Levi Stubbs, but I think Michael-Leon Wooley is my favorite Audrey II.
THATS WHAT IM SAYING
Both are the best
Not to be that person, douglas really stole this show. He's so funny!
I was hardly a year old when this was recorded
i wasnt even alive
I wasnt even alive
This is literally on my birthday LMAO September 23rd 2003
I wasn’t alive at that time 😶
I get what they were going for, having Hunter Foster play everything so straight and emotionless, but I just... I’ve never been a fan of his Seymour. His accent and everything is great but his delivery just comes off as weird... like someone reading these lines for the first time.
He also seems weirdly confident, not seymour at all
18:32 idk why that made me laugh.
I honestly came here for that scene. I appreciate the time stamp.
@@ommeloise6309 thank you.
Who is holding the camera? It'd be nice to see more action and less scenery.
Is Tarea Campbell in this bootleg
