Derrick's, Grandfather and Father were great ropers themselves. They roped near home at the AIRCA Rodeos. Derrick's grandfather, James Begay and Felix Gilbert won the AIRCA Team Roping Championship several times. I wish Derrick would mention these men in his life as influences who made a difference in his roping talent. I imagine as Derrick grew up it was like living at a roping clinic all the time. He grew up amongst great ropers. The Navajo Nation are proud of Derrick's accomplishments.
