Derrick Begay is a true cowboy in every sense of the word. Would like to meet Derrick someday. He's a man of few words but he's garnered much respect in rodeo. Lots of rodeo/western folk really admire and look up to this man.
Derrick Begay's grandfather, James Begay, was a great rodeo cowboy. James was mostly a healer for another great Navajo cowboy name Felix Gilbert. Felix Gilbert was also a great calf roper and all-around cowboy. In the 70's they were turning steers in 8 seconds at the Indian Rodeos on the Navajo Reservation. I know because I competed against them. Both men were horsemen and trained their own horses. Both men were always well mounted. You had to be to turn steers that fast at that time in our rodeo history. Rodeo is the main event every weekend on the Navajo Reservation. I heard that Derrick Begay's father is also a great roper. (I left the Navajo Res during Derrick's father's rodeo years.) He has to be having a father like James Begay. I looked up to Felix Gilbert and James Begay. They were my hero's!
I love how he says "It's crazy how things work out in your favor". Makes me wonder if Derrick has ever truly known how much Jesus loves him, considering how powerful his story is.
I'm sure the missionary schools tried to beat that in to all the stolen Native American children.
Derrick is the man. I have more respect for bin after this interview than ever before.
Hats off to Mr. Derrick Begay for being a great representation of our state and also the spirit of a true Arizona Cowboy.
Best place to hear about the most recognized people in the industry 👍🤠
.. his demeanor never changes! I love that!
Truly humble and completely down to earth. Proud of him in every sense of the word.
I'm not an avid team roping fan.. but this guy is keeping me laughing.. mostly because he clearly doesn't like to yap his mouth.. nor speak on video😄 His grin on certain topics/moments makes my heart happy♡ AWESOME interview!
Enjoyed the interview with Derrick. A real inspiration to young aspiring cowboys, tells it like it is.
"They did that in another world" that's exactly what the feeling is coming from the rez
Derrick Begay is someone everyone should look up to!!
Absolutely my favorite team roper! I hope some day to get the pleasure to shake his hand and let him know what an inspiration he is. I can’t say how much I admire his level of humbleness. Doesn’t run his mouth and and shows the weight of his words with actions!
This interview is amazing.... im glad you had him to open up. As a Navajo im proud of him. cuz he got out of his comfort zone. Hearing his story of the success and failer makes me admire him more. I laughed alot he is funny low key. I dont know him personally. but heard of him. You should try to get another Navajo Cowboy on your podcast again. Cody Jesus, Keyshawn etc.
Proud of you Derrick and great interview.
Navajo Nation is proud of you 👏
God always provides. Derrick is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Loved this Interview.
I met him at St. Paul Oregon he is as humble as they come. A true Hero
Great interview, honest, humble. He’s a cowboy!
As I was thinking throughout the day, I now recall Derrick's grandfather was also a header in team roping. James Begay was also a very good calf roper. I was informed Derrick's father was also a great Team Roper. The Navajo are very proud of Derrick's accomplishments. I was informed also that Derrick's father spent time with Aaron Tsinigine to teach him how to improve his team roping skills. Derrick comes from a line of very good ropers and horsemen. Derrick just opens this information to the rest of the world. Thank you, Derrick Begay!
Loved the interview with Derrick. He is down to earth. Still waiting to meet him someday. 😊
Derrick begay your job is being you...
That's obviously good enough..
Great interview 👍...
Great interview. Nice well mannered person. What I'd want a son to be.
It's Native (Navajo) Pride that stops us from letting others know we're broke or need help. I know where he's coming from. Also paying or giving back has been always been a part of my nature. 🙂
I see what you did there Tye, with all the advertisement spots.. it was worth it! 🤣👏🏻 What a gentleman! ❤️
Had breakfast with DB @ Dennys in Fort Mcdowell Az. not so long ago. Funny guy and a real deal Arizona cowboy. He is still pulling his half top to the rodeos that he built.
I've never met Derrick Begay but I'm a huge fan.. I hope he makes another run for the gold buckle.. his character is what sets him apart..
Yes, navajo nation
Excellent interview! I’m not a big team roping fan but I love to watch him rope and pull for him every time!
He is my favorite
Such a great man.
Derrick is going to achieve even more success. I can Relate to all he feels when he talks about his stories . My dad was the same way. Honest and pressed on learning by experience and that's what makes him the man he is. Alot of horseman talk about good horse ,but it's what you can do on a horse that matters most. Some goals are unrecognized until you have already done what many only dream of doing. I was always taught that if you have learned and achieved such dreams. Than you have nothing to prove. Derrick thank you for all the things you do for yourself and your daughter. That's what matters.
That is a soft spoken man!
Asking how many cows you own is liking asking how much money you have.
Nizhoni ... Biigaah
Yep and that's a big none of your buisness
Exactly it is. That is something to never ask a rancher. He is young and didn’t know better than to ask a question like. Hopefully he learned something.
Love this interview.. two thumbs up
Make a movie of his life….people need to hear and see these stories…
Derrick Begay

A Great Role Model You Are To The Navajo Nation.
YOU ARE A GREAT COWBOY IN MY BOOK BUD..
Best interview I've seen in awhile
Wow that’s awesome Derrick Begay.. 👍
Broke the Cardinal rule. Never ask a man how many cows he runs or how many acres he runs on. If he wants you to know, he’ll tell you.
Derrick is one heck of a good cowboy for sure.
My dad and Ned Begay were good friends from the show low area.
Good family all of them..
Keep riding tall hold that rope and don't fall.
Just recently found out about 12 gauge ranch I’ve always heard of it but it’s awesome part of the rodeo world
Great interview!👍🏽
Great interview 👍 loved every bit of it.
The blessings of having a supportive and connected family provides an opportunity for dreams to happen. Derrick you have capture this in your Navajo family. Thanks for being a motivational and an inspiration to others through your career. Best wishes to you and be safe.

Legend!
It's a home and what you have in your heart and the want
Great interview
You ain’t no cowboy if you ask how many head of cattle they own.
If you come from background, culture, tradition like he does you appreciate everything you have. Anybody can accomplish their dreams.
Just ran into him at sportsmans warehouse.
Not too long ago We’ve got the same saddle maker . Arizona strong 💪
AWESOME SPOKEN COWBOY
I think his Dad must have grown up like my Dad. They sound alike. Lol. No excuses !!
Awesome cowboy from where he's from.Aho...
Top Hand! The last of dying breed....
Humble Cowboy
He is being real.. Nothing forced and horsemanship was different to now
Oh ok.. I see now this is just a commentary... I thought this was a new movie that came out.. Well.... God Bless y'all and be safe❤
Legend team roper
You describe your dad to a T. Knew James,Jack n Felix. Remember top pro s coming to our rez Rodeo n cleaning us out. Then we realized.it was the horse power. James n Felix had the horse's. Derrick I wish you get a horse. And win
one!!!! Yup complete you're dream!
When is the Corpus Christi Texas Rodeo some one said pretty soon, maybe pretty soon is already came and gone
ARIZONA COWBOY..
Derrick Begay is my uncle an I want to be a roper too
I thought that tittle belong to world champion bull rider Charley Sampson?
Just a heads up, asking a man how many cattle he has or how many acres is the same as asking how much money he has. It's against the Cowboy Code.
Long Live Cowboys
Wonderful guest please treat him better
Turning steers in 8 seconds during the 70's was considered fast. During this time period team roping was going through a transition of hard & fast team roping to dally team roping. Dally team roping was easier on the roping steers. The Navajo Nation loves rodeos! Sure glad for the COVID-19 vaccine so we can have rodeos again.
Keep roping navajo nation..
Do you ever borrow horse from someone to rpoe?
No you don't need a real job . Your living Your life.
Ok
Instead of Rancher its Homesteading.

I don't think it is just natives who have the thoughts that being pro is out of reach
