Derrick Begay is a true cowboy in every sense of the word. Would like to meet Derrick someday. He's a man of few words but he's garnered much respect in rodeo. Lots of rodeo/western folk really admire and look up to this man.

Derrick Begay's grandfather, James Begay, was a great rodeo cowboy. James was mostly a healer for another great Navajo cowboy name Felix Gilbert. Felix Gilbert was also a great calf roper and all-around cowboy. In the 70's they were turning steers in 8 seconds at the Indian Rodeos on the Navajo Reservation. I know because I competed against them. Both men were horsemen and trained their own horses. Both men were always well mounted. You had to be to turn steers that fast at that time in our rodeo history. Rodeo is the main event every weekend on the Navajo Reservation. I heard that Derrick Begay's father is also a great roper. (I left the Navajo Res during Derrick's father's rodeo years.) He has to be having a father like James Begay. I looked up to Felix Gilbert and James Begay. They were my hero's!

I love how he says "It's crazy how things work out in your favor". Makes me wonder if Derrick has ever truly known how much Jesus loves him, considering how powerful his story is.

Absolutely my favorite team roper! I hope some day to get the pleasure to shake his hand and let him know what an inspiration he is. I can’t say how much I admire his level of humbleness. Doesn’t run his mouth and and shows the weight of his words with actions!

This interview is amazing.... im glad you had him to open up. As a Navajo im proud of him. cuz he got out of his comfort zone. Hearing his story of the success and failer makes me admire him more. I laughed alot he is funny low key. I dont know him personally. but heard of him. You should try to get another Navajo Cowboy on your podcast again. Cody Jesus, Keyshawn etc.

As I was thinking throughout the day, I now recall Derrick's grandfather was also a header in team roping. James Begay was also a very good calf roper. I was informed Derrick's father was also a great Team Roper. The Navajo are very proud of Derrick's accomplishments. I was informed also that Derrick's father spent time with Aaron Tsinigine to teach him how to improve his team roping skills. Derrick comes from a line of very good ropers and horsemen. Derrick just opens this information to the rest of the world. Thank you, Derrick Begay!

Derrick is going to achieve even more success. I can Relate to all he feels when he talks about his stories . My dad was the same way. Honest and pressed on learning by experience and that's what makes him the man he is. Alot of horseman talk about good horse ,but it's what you can do on a horse that matters most. Some goals are unrecognized until you have already done what many only dream of doing. I was always taught that if you have learned and achieved such dreams. Than you have nothing to prove. Derrick thank you for all the things you do for yourself and your daughter. That's what matters.

Turning steers in 8 seconds during the 70's was considered fast. During this time period team roping was going through a transition of hard & fast team roping to dally team roping. Dally team roping was easier on the roping steers. The Navajo Nation loves rodeos! Sure glad for the COVID-19 vaccine so we can have rodeos again.
