@@PieceIT And that's because the local government is happy to not have to deal with/pay for things within HOAs. It reduces their obligations and saves money so they often incentivize or require new subdivisions to be under an HOA. This is flat wrong.
I agree but, unfortunately, that isn’t always possible. When we bought, HOAs weren’t even on my radar, and the house we loved happened to make a big deal that it WAS NOT in an HOA. Before we settled, I was asking about HOAs, and WHOA! so glad we bought in a high end neighborhood that is established, and pretty much pre dates HOAs. Whew!
Can you imagine homeless starting a HOA. Rules on cardboard boxes and parking shopinh carts....
I was in the Navy for 21 years and never once heard the term “jelly butt buddy”….this is probably one of those guys that got medically discharged in 2 months but still calls himself a veteran…he’s taking the entire year’s HOA dues from 5-7 families and paying it to himself for gas???

Not really. I work for one. We have 3110 houses and we follow all HOA laws. Our Board of Directors are all volunteers and do not take any money. This particular HOA should be investigated. I love where I work and have been there for 28 years

I was on the board for our little subdivision of 63 houses for several years. Like this one. All we had was a park with a gazebo. We added a small shed but it was just a little garden shed and we use it to keep a barbecue and tables in that we use for summer events.
Our dues run a little over $200. A year. That pays for maintenance and of the park, lighting and insurance. Every penny is accounted for and all the documents went online for anybody to look at.
We also tried to stay pretty chill as far as enforcement. Sometimes something comes up that you have to deal with, but if you're literally out there with a ruler measuring people's lawns, you're not doing anyone any favors.

That board President is having his HOA pay for all his gas usage. Since there's no accountability he is taking advantage.
The sad part is that they will probably use HOA money to pay lawyers to help cover their corrupt behavior. Hopefully they make recordings of this news article and distribute it to all the homeowners. Then get that weasel out of office and put the plaque in the shed.
Put that plaque as the entry mat to the park's latrine.
All HOAs, especially in Nevada, need to be fully audited and monitored by both a State and independent board entity.
I have seen HOA leaders suddenly come upon some huge and oddly convenient windfalls. Especially since the HOA rates have been shooting up in Las Vegas. There is a ton of corruption going on, and no actual accountability.

Shady HOAs hire the shadiest parking enforcement companies too - they're still trying to tow people for expired registration despite the NV law changing last year to explicitly say that's not allowed
They literally have nothing but a Pavillion. No pool, playground, walking path, club house. Their HOA needs to be $10 a month.
Yes. I pay less than than for my HOA and we have a swimming pool and a recreation building available for use. Our minutes can be attended in person or with zoom.

Having previously rented a house in an HOA neighborhood, I’m so glad I bought a house out in the country that I could paint rainbow colors if I wanted to. Imagine buying a house, being lucky enough to fully pay it off, and then having to, on top of paying property taxes, pay a bunch of Karens FOREVER to tell you that your grass is too long, you’re not allowed to put up that fence, etc. And then they steal a bunch of money from you and talk shit about you in their secret board meetings. No thank you.
$105 a month x 169 homes is nearly $213,000 a year in dues, I would definitely like to know how that money was being spent if I was one of the homeowners paying over $1,200 a year.
IRS needs to audit the mileage deductions because they look like a scam.
This was absolutely ridiculous! There needs to be criminal investigations and charges brought.
Shame on NRED. These homeowners need help. The kind of help that NRED is supposed to exist to provide. And yet, NRED says, the problem is an internal one with the HOA? That is exactly the problem. The homeowners can't get through the "internal" workings of their HOA. This is not only a problem for Four Winds. It's a problem for everyone who owns a home in Common Interest Community in Nevada.
Our Hoa said if we have an audit the fees will go up to cover the costs

How are these acts not fraud or at least contrary to code, rules and regulations? Did the board file 1099's to the IRS & to the recipient... Did he report those reimbursements on his tax returns?
Keep at it! This kind of arrogant corruption is wildly epidemic. All over the country. Someone has to speak up. Thanks for doing the single most important thing a news organization can do : support consumers who have no one else speaking up for them.

When a certain Board member learned our bid outbid her friend’s bid for our home, I started receiving (harassing) non-compliance letters about my lawn’s overgrowth. Mind you, the lawn was/is mowed weekly, is in pristine condition, dark green and weed-free. I invested hours in leveling the soil and regularly weed-feed and fertilize to maintain a club-like course appearance. This lasted 3 yrs and only stopped because I retained a real estate lawyer.
Shame on the AG for not pursuing this.

Donate the park to the city, get rid of the HOA and you won't need the shed. And for the future don't ever, ever buy a home in an HOA.

Time to report this to the IRS. He is required to report this on his taxes each year. Yeah, there's a form to report reimbursements for business expenses.
The Nevada Department that oversees HOAs is useless. As soon as the HOA's attorney gets involved, they will side with the HOA every time.

Great piece done by this station. Hope the guy gets on the board and records every minute of the meetings. This guy being a corrections officer fears no one. For all the problems Florida HOA's have state law has improved accountability. The problem with this HOA is that the monthly dues are quiet small and the rest of the residents don't care about their money.

homeowners on the board only paid nazis whose primary job is to raise $$ from fines.
Lots of HOAs are run by big HOA corporations who own HOAs all over your area.

I was stunned when they said the HOA fee was $105/month. Over here in SW PA, we've got HOA fees that are over $600/month -- for not much benefit.
Buying in a place without and HOA is becoming increasingly difficult because they're tearing down old neighborhoods to put in new "developments". And every one has an HOA now.
Unless you can buy an older house - and afford to fix it up - you're stuck with an HOA.
Because it is a single homes Neiborhood that the homeowners are responsible to pay their maintenance home costs.

The air conditioned, security camera covered shed concerns me. I can think of several illegal possibilities that are going on in there and I hope I am wrong, but that needs to be checked sooner rather than later.

A MEMBER vote of no confidence which a clear majority of home owners, can be made at a board meeting, thus new elected officials can be seated on the house board.

I learned about the evils of HOAs in the 1990s. Why people are still paying HOAs is beyond me.

I could never live in such a crowded and compact neighborhood and certainly not for any amount of monthly payments. I don't care if the house is super nice and on two acres; I will never submit to a homeowners association.

HOA fees are like taxes. It's hard enough to keep tiny governments like HOA's in check. Imagine keeping a big government in check.

My home is under a HOA (thank God ours isn’t overbearing) and we don’t pay anywhere NEAR what the folks in the video pay for dues and yet we have a park, tennis court, a basketball court, and a pool. We also have events in our subdivision throughout the year. We pay a chunk at the beginning of the year but if broken down to monthly payments it would be like paying in the upper $30s/lower $40s each month. The folks in the video are getting ripped all the way off.

they should start a ballot initiative to make home owners asscociations accountable to the home owners or be dissolved. you would have to give me a home in one them to live there and I would sell it as soon as possible.
You also have corporations buying up mobile home parks. Jacking up the rent. Not doing repairs. Forcing familes out.

If you think the state cares about HOA fees...you are mistaken. I would get a bunch of homeowners and go look in the garage. If it's listed as community property...cops will say it's a civil matter. If it did go to court your defense team could ask for evidence of value. You might get a fine but they would have to turn over the books and they don't want to do that
14k miles each year charged in the thousands to drive to HOA? Where did $80k go? What gives them the right to charge what they want what is it to pay for? No pool no amenities?
If you join or purchase within an HOA it means you don't care about your money. You are trying to purchase safety and security on the cheap. That is always a bad idea.

If you or anyone in your community suspects that someone in the HOA is stealing than you ought to follow up on the suspicion it's more than likely someone in the HOA is definitely stealing.

The residents need to get ahold of that $1,000 self congratulatory metal plaque and use it to force the board president to decide if he'd rather go to the hospital or the jail.
Common areas usually include streets, lighting, utility connections, insurance, entry gates and signage/landscaping, and sidewalks as well as any clubhouse, park, swimming pool, etc.
The problem with State investigating you must solve the case for them.

We have the same problem with our HOA, contacted channel 13, did not want to deal with us. A guy called and was actually pretty rude, sent us to the office of ombudsman.

HOA could do that because the owners were passive lazy and detached from their HOA's meetings. They should have smelled a fish long time ago, hired lawyers and start building a case with track records. Now it is late and they are old shriveling and robbed alive. Having 13 years of Directorship at my condo we had monthly meetings with agenda, notes of meetings, all expenses needed 3 signatures to every cheques we wrote, records were kept open to all and reserve funds were up to par with necessities of repairing doors windows etc. No debt either. Ship shape HOA. Our worst enemy was owners'inertia.

That crooked HOA president & crooked HOA board bought a nice motorhome for just them to share , on the HOA’s money, and they’re hiding it in that garage/storage unit.

HOAs are either run by petty tyrants who own homes or by petty bureaucrats hired by the association to manage things. Either way, they're only interested in ramping up the fees and finding ways to embezzle. Associations around Vegas regularly charge more than twice as much what this guy pays - when I was shopping, I saw HOA fees as high as $350 a month for a 1,100 sq. ft. condo with no landscaping to speak of (maze of sidewalks and river rock) and the most microscopic pool you've ever seen. My HOA spends $30,000 a year on a "reserve" fund that's balance doesn't change year to year.
Stop paying your HOA they don't have any power to do anything to you or have them removed.
You are so wrong. If you're a member of a HOA non-payment of dues can result in liens, monetary fines and legal actions.
