It really must be Throwback Thursday 😄 I sailed about 3 months onboard this ship, back in 2008, as an Assistant ETO. Happy to see she's still around, and in good shape. Thank you for the video 👍🏻
Very interesting, I always wondered what the inside of a container ship looked like. We went thru the Panama canal twice, passed by a big container ship and wondered how does the crew live
My 3.5 year old LOVED it. He laughed at the brought to you by too much coffee, and repeated every room after you said it. We live in Minnesota so are very landlocked, but he is obsessed with ships :)
to be fair, yeah, this is easly one of the best kept container ships I have ever seen. some MSCs I work on, especially Cyprus management, are the absoulte worst 🤣
Very interesting. I haul those containers in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia. Really cool to see a tour of the ship that brings my freight from around the world.
I did stick around for the whole thing, it was fun, I enjoyed watching it, I had my own 4788 Bayliner Diesel ship and past these all the time in Long Beach, I was docked in Huntington Harbor, CA, I always wondered what was going on, on all these guys outside Long Beach harbor, now I know, amazing, thanks for the tour
Thanks for the tour, Joe - I was lucky enough through work to board and be given a tour of a container ship (MV Santa Ursula) a few years back. 11:57 It was a lifelong aim, and it's not until you're on one of these vessels that you really appreciate their size, especially the engine room.
Brings back memories from when I was on a container ship (around 1982 or so). Our mooring lines were a combination of rope and wires. No computers for us to use though back in those days.
Hello Joe I'm from New Jersey myself Middlesex county I've always been fascinated with container ships I used to go to port in Newark or Elizabeth can't remember it's bin so long to pick up the trash usually plastic and oily rags one time I got a tour of one of those ships I was absolutely fascinated. If I’d of known of this career in the 80’s Id of loved this, little human contact ( comparatively to most jobs ) good pay, seeing things you’d typically never see, great choice in careers, love the vids
Hi Joe. Your videos are so nice and simply explained. Always a pleasure to watch them. Particular this one because I like these types of ships especially. Some would say they are just some huge piece of steel moving the cargo from here to there, but I find them elegant and nice-looking vessels. At least the shape of their hull are literally harmonious. By the way? Where is everybody? Seems like an unmanned ship and you're the only ghost haunting on the gangways :). God bless you, sailor!
That's what's up New Jersey attaway bro ! Freakin huge humongous ship with a massive engine room and massive container storage areas everything and then the little pool and tiny gym and tons of coffee. Big coffee fan myself here I know I stop in Italy I'm having some Pizza and some espresso and coffee and spaghetti the works. TEXAS in here !
Very nice tour. I have worked in much worse places. You do have your own room and know your job or watch. Just do your job and enjoy the ride. Many admire the ability to travel the world on a ship. Even if you have to work it is not back breaking or dangerous. It looks like you can have time off after months of work. It is very nice to have large blocks of time off not just Saturdays and Sundays with a few weeks a year. It is a very good view of a life away from a desk and computer every day.
Grass is always greener…. The blocks of time come with a cost. 24 hours confined, seven days a week, and maybe 120 days straight. Oh….and a lot of broken marriages. Ram
Really good content Joe this is the way you make a UA-cam channel and I hope you're very successful in your endeavors because I know with all the rest you have to do in your day it's not easy to put this together and edit it
I’m very impressed with the standard of cleanliness aboard this vessel. The whole thing is SPOTLESS. Is there a cleaning staff of are the crew responsible for their own part of ship? Great tour.
I saw the NJ in your openings and thought ayyy, a fellow jersey dude... then I saw the 609 on your hard hat, and the shot of your camper and the trees... I grew up off Exit 127, living in AC now. Small world! Incredible the views you have with such a small subscriber count
I enjoyed everything, including your jokes and music. The only thing I was longing for re the ship, was the food. What do you all eat? I assume you eat in the gallery. Thank you for a fun and informative video.
Great tour Franta. You’ve come along way from the free and needs repair. Is anyone else on that boat besides you and the one dude in the bridge? lol I was surprised with all that walking we saw no one else.
Thanks Wertz! SS Free N needs Repair holds a special place in my heart lol. Yea, about another 18 people hiding around the ship. Shot most of the tour in the middle of the night 😉
Didnt realize how deep the storage was below deck😨 And also I never thought that the engine room would be so clean👌🏻 I’ve only seen the engine rooms on fishing boats and such on tv and they are not that clean😂
Hey Joe, love your content and all videos have yet to see one that explains how sailors get paid on tours like the ones you do. Does it depend on your qualifications? Please do a video on pay for certain trips and different ranks
Worked offshore oil rigs for a number of years as a diver. I really miss those days. Wish I had shipped out as part of my career. I am still excited by the marine industries. Thanks for the vlog. It keeps me in touch. Cheers
Have you ever done the North Atlantic or rounded the Capes? My Dad spent some time in the South Pacific where He said the weather was always great right up until it wasn't ever encounter any weather?
Really enjoyed the video. I spent 4 years in the navy back in the 70's. I spent my time on the USS Kalamazoo. An AOR.I wish my ship was like this. This is very different. I think I would have re-up_ed as they say,if my ship was like this!

Being a reefer mechanic in the port of Hampton Roads for 30 years I’ve been on a lot of container ships. I love the gangway on the Maersk Iowa and Ohio and those older ships because it’s not tall like the big we get now. Ships like the Author and Albert Maersk are great for a reefer man. They have individual reefer plugs right by each box so you don’t have to drag out so much cord. Which do like best Joe? Container ships or bulk carrier ships?
Aw good question, containers are great for the easy work (as far as ABs go) basically just standing watch, but no time in port. Bulkers are the opposite, hard work, but longer port stays. I guess it just depends on how I'm feeling when i sign articles lol
@@JoeFranta Does one pay better? I mean between container ship and the bulk carrier. And does pay differ between lines, ships, trips? My family were Union construction workers and those were pretty much the same pay for different companies or jobs, just different for different levels of skill, seniority, or responsibilities.

Hey Joe you ever go to Cali I work at the port in Oakland ca longshoremen ilwu local 10, i havnt really been thru the full ship but that was interesting seeing you go thru the hole ship an what it was about an on it in full detail, if u ever go to Oaklands CA ports mybe we'll run into each other one day if so, i like ur videos keep it up bro an be safe out there
Do you generally have unrestricted free access to all areas of the ship? Like the bridge would you have to get permission when not on your official shift or can you go up there anytime you want? I’m sure the captain quarters would be off limits unless you have official business like being a steward.
Yeah I stuck around to the end. It probably seems boring to you but for someone who has never seen inside a container ship it was really interesting so thanks😁
Interesting that the pool has a Hartford Whalers logo in it. I wonder if it had been part of their facilities and the shipping company bought it cheap when the team moved.
I did stick around for the whole thing and I actually did enjoy it. Who knew there would be a pool! It was kinda deep but not exactly Olympic size by any means!
The ship looks very clean and well-maintained. Do you have janitors, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, oilers, welders, hvac and refrigeration people, instrument technicians, etc. and associated workshops? Is there a medic or nurse and infirmary? Is there a store? Is the crew all male? Do you have internet service throughout the ship or only in the library? Do you have satellite TV? Does the ship take paying passengers?
Nice to see the other end of the supply chain. I haul containers of meat from the Midwest meat plants to California ports to export to Asia. Since Maersk is a foreign company, how does that work? Are they American flagged ships that you can work on? Or any country’s ships as a Merchant Marine? Considering all the ships you worked on, are you a part time crew member for each ship? Or is that the only way to work on foreign ship lines? Any difference in pay or duties in what you do vs a ships full time crewman?
I only have worked on American flagged ships. The contracts I take are usually relief contracts to cover for a person on a longer contract taking a few months off.
