Best engine room tour ever. I miss being at sea. In an engine room the rest of the world does not exist with all it's problems. Former engineer.
I am always stunned by the amount of engineering that goes into moving the millions of containers that are shipped all over the world. Even a smaller ship like my fathers RORO ferry had a huge and rather cramped engine room so this cathedral like space is magnificent in comparison. I congratulate the designers and manufacturers of these feats of construction and design. For anyone who doesn't comprehend this is a great video to show just what there is keeping them in consumer goods and remember there are hundreds of ships similar to this on our little planet as well as bulk carriers, oil and gas tankers and all manner of other vessels doing that thing that is largely invisible to the rest of us. Many thanks.
Grew up with Star Trek and 007 movies. EVERYONE knows these decks should be a hum of uniformed crew, clipboards, checking things, activity, carrying paper cups of coffee, and more flashing light beacons.
Incredible, that engine room is cleaner than many hospitals I've seen.

I can’t get over how much machinery there is and, as someone else commented, how clean it all is, but where is everyone, are you the only person on board. It’s like a modern day Marie Celeste.

Everything is monitored from the control room. Everything has an alarm so that's when you'd see engineers jump into action

I can't imagine the amount of time it took to design and engineer this ship let alone the time it took to build it. And then the planning required to place systems in the proper order during construction. It's just amazing.
68,000kw equals 91,190hp or 3.75hp per 20 foot container. I would imagine it would be difficult to get a 20 foot container up to 20 knots with a tiny outboard motor. So remarkably efficient giant.

Most have bacteria and viruses on them.

I was in the shool in the late 70,s, learning how to weld big ship, about 190 meter long. It was ship for Sweden and Finland! Now ships are two time bigger! How they make all drawings?

I remember the first Time on a "big" Cruise Ship .. on the Meyer Shipyard/Germany around 1990
it was Huuuge same to the Engine Rooms ..
But this Thing is a other League it's a small City !!

Have you thought of adding narration to each machine, explaining what it's for and how it works. Or maybe one video per machine...?
If your native language is not english, you could use a voice over. Just check the typing, spelling and grammar is correct as they "speak" exactly as it is typed.

That is why I didnt mention ships name and skip companies logo etc. Yes English is not my native lang.However I can speak english as work with diff. natianalities ( indian, german , Dutch, Danish,croatian, italian. romanian, canadian, UK, polish, chineese, indonesian, filipinos, South african, Spanish, Portilugese, Russian, Ukrain and many others
Retired outboard mechanic, 2 stroke. Amazing engine and accessory rooms. Would be very happy working there, so clean and organised, very professional. At 19:45 the images of the prop shaft is very impressive, I guess the machinery & pipes at 20:05 is bearing lube oil/pump at the stern where the shaft exits the motor room? Thanks for the post. We have total 6 Engineers including myself( Chief Engineer). It is absolutely impossible to know every single piece, but most important. we know where to find information of trobleshooting quickly and act accordingly.

Very awesome video! Love the complexity of the mechanical spaces. Whole lot of pumps and machines to get a couple dozen people and a whole lot of cargo across the planet. When I see the amount of investment in one ship and mulipty it by the thousands of ships out on the seas both new and old, it gives an idea of the money and power involved in the global economy. And this is just one sector. Kind of scary to think what nations would do to keep or gain dominance. By the way, it looks like you were sailing through the Gulf of Oman toward the Arabian Sea when you were recording this? Probably just leaving Dubai would be my guess. My best wishes to you for happy and safe travels of the world.

Great video - incredible machine. I have a hundred questions but I’ll just ask a few. If that huge GE generator on the propeller shaft is “online” how many aux engines do you have to run (or at what load are they under) ? And what do you use steam for ? Fuel oil heating, fresh water production, exhaust gas treatment ( my guesses?) one more- why such a large waste water treatment plant ?- I wouldn’t think the crew is that big…. Thanks for such a great tour! Happy travels.(I’m sorry one more - around 16:00 the machinery with what looks like rectangular plates stacked and bolted together- with the emergency eye wash stations- what are those? Cheers!,

Q) If that huge GE generator on the propeller shaft is “online” how many aux engines do you have to run (or at what load are they under) ?
A)Please note, beside of standard containers we are carrying also reefer containers which require additional power .Average Reefer container load 3,8 kw X 2000 Reefers =7600 kw. Average sea going load to run machinery(scrubber,pumps,fans,Purifiers etc) 3600 Kw. Port load 2100Kw.Air lubrication system 1750 Kw. Bow Thruster 2 X 3000 Kw. Thus Load depend of amount of reefers on board and vessel speed. Air Lubrication system consist 10 air compressors 170 Kw each.We have 2AEs x 4000 Kw + 3AEs X 4300 Kw + SG 4300 Kw. Bear in mind that we need also stand-by engine for maintenance purpose on another engines.
Usually, we keep one AE 75% load + Shaft Generator 75% load. In Tropical area some times we start another AE since more cooling require and need to run 2 SW pumps .
Q) And what do you use steam for ?
A) Steam we need mostly for fuel treatment . We run our engines on HSFO 700 cst.To. run engines we have to maintain viscosity 14 Cst around 150-160 C. Fuel. Transfer temperature 45C. HFO purifiers 98C ,LO Purifiers 95C. In winter time we need to heat accommodation as well.
Q) one more- why such a large waste water treatment plant ?
A) We have 2 STP units (one ER and Accomodation) total crew members 30. STP is not large ,just average this is standard in nowadays

@@davidandrewsilver This unit called BOTU ( Bleed off treatment unit) total 4 units . BOTU related to scrubber EGCS ( Exhaust gas cleaning system) , principle simillar to reverse osmos. Clean water after membrane passing through water monitoring system ( (PH, TURBIDITY, PAH) directly overboard. When EGCS run in close loop zero discharge mode - scrubbing water is circulating through the scrubber and returning ti the process tank, when density is rising ,BOTU draining process tank to Holding tanks and dirty iffluent to sludge tank.
Without any sound, you'd not be able to tell if everything is running (on video).

Of course ,all doors locked permanently in addition we have CCTV cameras all around

So clean and so well maintained. The engineers involved in the layout must have spent years on the arrangements, piping, cabling etc... I just wonder why there are no screw compressors used for the starting air. Is it because of the required pressure or has it to do with reliance ?
Required starting air pressure 30 bar. Min 12 starts. For vontrol air and service air we have Screw compressor (8 bar pressure)We have additional screw compressors 12 units for Air lubrication system ALS located FWD not shown in video
So, why on the big slow speed engines don't they use variable pitch propeller so the don't have the delay of stopping the engine completely and starting in the other direction when maneuvering?
I think propeller is too big for CPP 10,5 Diam

Just curious how much does that crankshaft balancer weigh? How big is the prop that is moving that big of ship that fast turning that slow? Last question what is the expected bearing life?

A) There are Bearing Wear monitoring system installed .BWMS assist to control bearing wear.
Expected Life time 80000-90000 rhrs or 13-15 years.
The engine is compromised of a certain class. Cylinders can be added or removed based on requirements.

Permanently manned engine room 4 hrs watches one engineer and motorman on watch , maneuverings: Chief engineer, duty engineer, ETO,MTM, rest of team day workers

Gosh, I'd have so much fun looking at all the controllers, drives, engines, boilers, HVAC equipment, mechanical, electrical, plumbing rooms aboard this beast! I know nothing about ships, but was a Facilities Manager and I could have fun looking at all this equipment, forgetting I was at sea and not in a skyscraper as not all Mechanical rooms sound like this with this amount of DB. I'd really love to look at the MEP automation software that compiles all the data at local workstation.
I started in 1999 as cadet on reefer ships . 2 years as 4th Engineer , 5 years as 3 rd Engineer , 5 years as 2nd Engineer , last 9 years as Chief Engineer. Starting is always difficult- so many companies , but remmember experience is always better than no experience! For starting you can chouse any company, Just update your CV, Cover letter and apply !
Can everything be controlled from the command bridge?

Main engine, Bow Thruster Steering gear , Fire fighting can be controlled from the Bridge.
We have planned maintenance schedule for each machinery and duties-Of course we are working just using PPE (ear protectors). Some times sea passage takes 25 days

We have to preheat heavy fuel RMK 700 to 150 C in order to maintain viscosity 14 cst. Daily fuel consumption 210 Mt. Fuel transfer temp 45 C , HFO purification at 98C .Of course we need steam !

Where was everyone? (Anyone?) There was one person monitoring in the control room, and while it's been year since I've been aboard, there was always someone mopping the decks, wiping the handrails, machining a part for somewhere or greasing the chainfalls.
We are not jutubers, not every engineers like to show their faces😉I just wanted to show engine room arrangement and machinery especially to junior engineers or cadets.It was my biggest ship (not main engine)after 25 years experience .Video made mostly -either during coffee time of after working hours.

You're way off on your numbers that's nowhere even close to the largest container ship. The largest ships hold about 30,000 20 footers and up
I dont know about 2024 , but in. 2023 this ship was one of the largest container 24346 TEU.Just google it.

Dont worry man. Video is not about security!We have strict company policy regarding cyber security and all crewmbers have security certificates.Door lock and passwords everywhere. Just during ER tour open lock well in advance( not easy to walk with camera in one hand and same time open door locks)
